Wow, a meaty free report that doesn’t require an opt-in, and that doesn’t rush to pimp yet another internet marketing report / continuity program / call-in course?
Pinch me, I’m dreaming!

Well done John. Excellent information on what to focus on in 2010. I like the honest opinion about your own projects, the FTC changes, and social media.
I’ll be rereading this quarterly.

I’m glad to see that you have the common sense to ignore the small minority who post some pretty horrible remarks on your blog. There are some sad people out there.
Thanks for the report but do I really have to read it? Couldn’t you phone me up at a time of my choosing and read it to me?

John, since even before your $1m day and introducing me to Kern and Walker I have absorbed every last word of wisdom. I now have multiple businesses with customers in 23 countries. You have consistently under priced and over delivered.
Readers: Clear your heads of any hesitation, discomfort or fear. John Reese is a hero and absolutely at the top of the IM game and won’t let you down if you follow his wisdom to the letter….when the launch happens -> just click and JFDI.

The changes do appear to be coming. It is almost scary, isnt’ it. Let the smart marketer be aware….
October 13th, 2009 at 5:47 am
Hey John,
Great report! I totally agree with you on Social Media, and the section on becoming an expert rather than “Faking it ’till you Make it” was something every aspiring entrepreneur should take some time to read and apply to their efforts.
Take care,

Interesting topline stuff, but too generalised to be practially useful.
1. Social media does drive PPC volume. It has a value in the same way TV, newspapers and even online display drive PPC searches. You just need to get the measurement right to allocate the credit.
2. I agree it appears you have limited business skills, especially outside PPC, hence your return to your “cash cow”.
3. What advice would you give to people starting up late in the game now, when all the best sites, urls, affiliate contracts etc have been snapped up by you and your buddies? Would you agree the slice of the pie available is tiny these days?
4. How do you feel about businesses becoming much more aware of the cannibalisation and cost burden that affiliates are to companies these days? Would you agree marketers are waking up to the fact you are just another middleman between the consumer and the seller?
As an observer of your output for years, I am finally waking up to the fact you are self-serving and mostly hot air. That your emails have mostly promoted your own profits, not ours, and that you are little different to the same tricky schemes that used to run in the 70’s where “free stuff” came at a price. Unsubscribe.

Thanks John. Changes appear to be coming and yet, people have always adapted. Its hard at times not the get into the “fake-it” game when it can seem at times that that is what so many are doing, its almost normal. Providing value, having a good customer relationship, I guess that is where its at. Food for thought.
Cheers, Jan
October 13th, 2009 at 5:53 am
As always John, solid stuff. I wish more people would apply your level of transparency to their businesses. It shines fresh light and helps “skeptics” see that even the “gurus” are just real people.
A great read John, thanks for putting it together.

Good Report. One of the few that I have actually read to the end. Still a little long, I like it to be short and to the point.
Do appreciate that you do not ask for a sign in till the comments part. That way I have choice.
October 13th, 2009 at 5:57 am
John,
Before I even download this material I just want to thank you.
After getting a chance to meet and briefly hang out with you out at the MC2 seminar I saw for myself just how earnest, genuine and generous you really are.
I appreciated the gems of powerful wisdom you shared even though you didnt have an actual stage presentation, the things you shared seemed to me some of the most straightforward, honest and effective pieces of advice to build a successful business.
I remember some of your statements like :
“you already know all you need to know to make a million, JUST GET TO WORK”
and
“its easy to make a million, just find a repeatable way of making $100 and scale your efforts up”
I am confident that I’ll find more of the same “tell it like it is” training in this road ahead report.
thanks for sharing the mistakes and pitfalls too.
thanks and take care

I agree, it’s a great report. The FTC thing is worrying though, and I hope it will not apply to stuff created before the ruling right? Otherwise I have to spend a year to change stuff
October 13th, 2009 at 6:12 am
John,
I totally agree with your opinion on Social Media. It’s good for syndicating content but that’s about it. I think the only people who will object to your opinion are those who’ve built businesses on it.
I also appreciate your transparency on your own business failures. We’ve all got ‘em and it’s nice to know that even the IM gods have made mistakes, too.
I’ll be following your emails and product releases closely. Keep up the great work!
October 13th, 2009 at 6:12 am
I enjoyed your report John.
I tend to think that marketing is a double edged sword.
It is easy on the one hand to send out email after email with promotional offers. And in truth, it is a bit like magic when you check your stats 10 minutes later and have a pile of cash in your account.
But the problem is that it can commoditise the relationship over time.
I receive a ton of marketers emails.
They all tell me they make lots of money, and that I can do it too.
But their words are no longer heard, because I don’t even open, much less read most of them.
They are not authentic any more in my eyes.
They have sent me too many messages without caring what’s in it for me, and have only thought of what’s in it for them.
They lack compassion because they couldn’t care less (in reality) whether they are at least coming from a good place when they send out a message. Its all just dollars in the bank.
Just lately, in all honesty, I had toyed with the idea of downgrading your emails to the ‘quick skim’ category. (One above not opening, but below actually reading them with ‘intent’ to consider the proposal - Intent to my mind is earned), simply because after dozens of affiliate promotions I did start to wonder if you had lost the ability to simply send a ‘normal’ email, like for example I would get if I signed up for a newsletter about painting techniques.
“Stop Selling me Paintbrushes! Show me some techniques!”
I think the idea of INCESSANTLY recommending products (without additional content or context) is only true within the make money crowd.
It panders to peoples greed, short attention spans, and the fact that people will happily drop a ‘Make Money in a week!’ idea, to check out a ‘Make money in 97 seconds” idea.
But sooner or later, everyone gets fed up with being pitched.
An example of a ‘good approach’ (I think anyway) is Phil Wileys newsletter. Because its always ‘normal’. Sure he sells stuff (most issues actually). But there is always something worth reading in it, and at least you get the idea he put some thought into it.
Anyhow, good to see that your brain has gone off of the auto-pilot ’send stuff, send stuff’ mode, and back into ‘Is this any good? Would I read this?’ mode.

Great job, John.
After getting to know you personally after observing you for years on the sidelines and through mutual friends, I have to say you left two things out that contribute to yours and other REALLY successful people.
Authenticity.
Your “voice” in this document is 100% who I know you to be.
Empathy.
You’re an amazingly kind, thoughtful, insightful and generous guy.
You’re ongoing “inner journey” and hunger for “what’s next” and willingness to share where you are on your path shows your heart.
Kudos.
Write more of this and your raving fans and customers will continue to follow and buy from you.
Your San Diego friend,
Mike

A great read! I admire your honesty in owning up the mistakes that taught you valuable lessons. It is very rare for internet marketers to share with others the lessons they have learned at a tremendous cost. The cost is not just in terms of the money wasted but painful experiences that cut through our mind and heart. There is hardly anyone out there who will be willing to share the lessons learned from their own failures. The advice you give become more credible, meaningful, practical and implementable when they are presented after a frank disclosure of what has worked or not worked for you. I will be referring to this article on my blog http://www.reviewsuseek.com.

Hi John,
I just read your timely report and as I read it a tear streamed down my eye. (well, almost
)
Why?
Because as far as I can remember I haven’t read a report from the “gurus” that was this sincere, honest and down-to-earth for a long, long time.
And I love it that you relate your business stories and advice with so much honesty, almost as if it was a dairy…
The advice at the end was the nail in the coffin as it serves as a reminder and a filter to internet marketers, especially newbies with information overflow as they call it… to get back to the roots, the core aspects of Internet marketing.
And last but not least, I wanna thank you for being non-patronizing unlike 99.9999% of the marketers out there!
Jason.

Hi John
I know about you for over 3 years. Your Exposure as IM Guru was great, but form the report it is now clear to me that I was right NOT to buy any of your IM stuff. You did not have ANY experiences in running a conventional business. And you fail when tryed one. I hope you are now realized that only REAL business is one which combined both “systems” and only a “Guru” with expirience of both business models can teach others how to make money. That is what Google want to change to weed-out BS Guru IM crap.
I am continue monitoring your progres…….

Hey john
The only way to make money these days, is by providing valuable service to your customers.
By giving more in use value, than the cash value you take from them.
It is pretty simple don’t you think?

This was excellant. Very meaty content on a variety of subjects.
Specially liked the don’t fake it comments.
Just a vey good well rounded commentary.

John - well said, well done… you exemplify what entrepreneurial spirit is all about.
They say if you are smart you would learn from the mistakes of others. Well, I happen to be one that makes all the mistakes - and there are certain things that people can’t learn from my mistakes without actually making those mistakes - Expensive tuition, as I would like to call it.

Thanks a lot for the report. Great info for people on what they should do in 2010, especially about FTC changes. I don’t agree with you on all counts as far as social media is concerned, especially about comments, as we can control the subjective opinions by competitors and others.
On the whole, its a great report from some one speaking from the heart! (caring for customers!)
October 13th, 2009 at 6:43 am
Hi John,
Thanks for the update and valuable information. I’ve been gathering a good deal of data on the Google Content Network. And your spot on. I’m getting a steady stream of opt-ins from very specific sites. I’ve learned several vaulable tips just by experimenting and testing.
1) When setting up a Google Content Network campaign, your keywords should define a theme (I’ve noticed that about 2-5 keywords works best
2) Also your AD should match your keyword theme
3) The AD headline is critical, sometimes, depending on where your ad gets placed, all people will see is the headline!
Thanks again for honest and quality content.
Michael
P.S. I woke up at 2:15am PDT, with an interesting idea on how to drive traffic. I haven’t seen anyone doing this yet. So I’m not about to tell. I’ll be in touch.

John,
Never mind the naysayers or detractors. Stay true to yourself, above all else. Kudos to you on your recent realizations and re-affirming truths. Mea Culpa, Mea Culpa!
I personally found your message to be honest and humble. I totally appreciate your sincerity and ’service wake-up’. I read this report to the end, without interruption. I found it easy to read and compelling.
The report had some rewarding bits of data, treasured trinkets, that I can’t wait to apply, including some of your insights for the future of Internet Marketing.
Welcome back….
Keep up the good work and good deeds!
Andrew Zubriczky
P.S. Transparency and honesty on the Internet is a good thing. Government control though isn’t. I would be willing to fight the recent FTC ruling. Others have in other industries. Why can’t Internet marketers get together and DO SOMETHING?
October 13th, 2009 at 7:12 am
As many others have said, a great report.
All along I have said that Facebook and Twitter are
a big waste of time.
Just one bit to add to your summary at the end where you say “content is kong” or
“content is king”:
In fact, on the Internet, “Snackable Content Is King” .
I am presently writing an e-book called “The Joy of Being Retired: 365 Reasons
Why Retirement Rocks (and Work Sucks) and making sure that, unlike most of my other books, it has great “snackable content.”

Hey John,
Great report!
No doupt its great to get the opinion of a master…
I do believe social media not to be a time waster and works great for local businesses providing services, as opposed an internet marketers trying to sell a product the quickest way possible…
I do wonder how testamonials will be looked at by the FTC when it comes to services rendered when it comes to local businesses now.
October 13th, 2009 at 7:27 am
Hey John,
Congratulations on your journey! Your passion for cards and the auto business you started are just a journey. And, you’ve learned alot from it. Thanks for sharing, as some might have hinted that you’ve lost your touch. What they don’t realize is that you’re blazing the trail!
While I must admit I enjoy social media, I also must say that Google no longer gets $12,000 a month from me and many others. Maybe they should ready the last segment of your reesism. Who can duplicate a $12,000 monthly adwords budget??? Not a newbie (my market).
Thanks for posting the “fake it til you make it.” There’s a LARGE group of people in my marketing place (mlm/ direct sales) who are not calling themselves Gurus (ok, experts) and they are all learning from the same place, but they have NO TRACK RECORD. You gain track record by DOING and by Failing Forward and by making the MONEY!! (again, my market).
VALUE is the key in the NOW market. I recently bought a product that some of your friends have done with Tony Robbins. I watch the 1st video and felt like it didn’t live upto Tony Robbins Standards. It seemed like a sales pitch. NOW - had it been chocked full of Valuable Information I COULD NOT do without, I’d have continued to subscribe — But, it’s a different market & why would I want to pay for somone elses ego trip?
Jay NaPier
October 13th, 2009 at 7:35 am
Your insights about social media largely mirror my own philosophy but the demand to “be social” is so overwhelming it’s hard to fight against.
I love your insights about media buying, too. I want to get good at it before the wave hits and well your report is just going to make it hit faster. lol
My question in your software development strategy, since you have built a team, is there any chance you’ll be making some wordpress plugins?
October 13th, 2009 at 7:38 am
Hi John,
Thank you for the research, it is very helpful and well explained.
I agree to your statement that a lot of Social Media sites and services are being used for entertainment and socializing. Although most people are not using it to research and buy products. I often monitor top100 websites on alexa.com and figured it out that most of those websites are socializing and are used to entertain. I don’t know why people are being crazy to spend their valuable time in scrapping, commenting on each others’ pictures and minor acts, playing online games etc. Apart from these websites, I’ve found very rich contented websites that really are helping others, in fact promoting IM by socializing. Other websites on top ranking are search engines and news publishers.
There are much more running inside my mind related to your research, however I would like to conclude my words by saying that your words “serve your market” worth a lot and great content can help to grow your business instead of shooting promotional offers via email or posting fake massages on blogs etc.
Regards
Lyanna

John, thanks for sharing this report with us, it contains some excellent advice. Up until this year, I definately experiened the “kiss of death” that you mentioned, but I’m much more focused these days.
Thanks again for this great insight.

Thanks for the report John. I agree with the programming thing. It took me a long time to find a good programmer working directly for me. I even had some companies try to fool me into thinking they were one person working for me as they were planning to dish of the work to subordinates.

Indeed, it’s a great report. It comes out as very honest when personal matters are involved. I can agree on most of your opinions about social media too. And I believe I’ll heed your warnings about taking a proactive stance with recent changes in FTC, Google, etc. Thanks a lot!
October 13th, 2009 at 7:48 am
John.
Thanks for the report and nice not to have to opt-in. This can be annoying when you have been on a list for a couple of years and still have to opt-in. I have been on the lists of one or two commenters above for ages and still have to opt-in for a free report.
October 13th, 2009 at 7:57 am
Thanks for this juicy report John. Loved the idea you provided for the Content Network. I will be implementing your idea this week.

I got to know a lot of new stuffs here.
Thanks John.

John,
I just read your report from start to finish and wanted to take a few minutes to say “thanks”.
Not only is there a lot of meaty content but it was also refreshing to hear about the “hard learned” lessons as well.
Sometimes these serve as the best way to learn.
Anyway nice job on the report and glad to hear California is working out
All the best.

Hi John -
Nice job with your take on marketing in 2010. You are right about the FTC. - Shivering in it’s broad and muddy reach.
Hope the move to San Diego brings a better lifestyle. “Brick and Mortar Social Marketing” capital of the world in CA…
Google is interesting with it’s Doubleclick move for sure…

Thanks for the report John,
I especially liked the FTC part and have started making changes on my web sites. One question I have is: for those sites displaying eBay auctions, do they also have to alert the visitor that income is realized if the visitor buys via the site? I hope the answer is NO but suspect it may be yes. Would appreciate feedback on that.

Thanks for the free report - and no opt-in list to receive it. Lots of great stuff but I completely agree with you on the subject of Social Media. I do think there’s a place for it but it’s much more important to focus your time on what really makes the cash for you.

Thanks for the report. You’re spot on: about programming, social media, metrics.
Excellent!

It’s good to have you back.
October 13th, 2009 at 8:34 am
John,
Thank you for putting out more valuable info. I don’t agree with your take on social media, and this report didn’t have the impact that The Rebirth Of Internet Marketing had IMHO, but it was a good read and insightful nonetheless.
I appreciate you taking the time to be so transparent with your business and for providing solid content with little pitch.
Thank you.

Thanks John, I did think you had gone a bit quiet of late - your report explains it all. Hope to see you back leading the pack in the not too distant future. Rock on Income.com
October 13th, 2009 at 8:37 am
Hey John,
Thanks for this report. Actually it was nice to find out what happened with Income.com as I was experienced with your PLF. I signed up for it on launch day with your early link. I wondered why the development you mentioned in your emails prior to launch never came to pass; and now I know why.
I had a chuckle reading about the social media thing. I too was convinced this was going to be the latest and greatest new thing. So I opened up a Facebook, Squiddo, and Twitter account…but soon found it was like checking your emails constantly; practically nothing got accomplished.
I tried to actually create dialogue on Twitter. I found that people apparently think posting headlines, quotes, and spamming are quality posts. I got about 1200 followers before I became bored. I check back and still make real comments, but the luster has faded off the lamp.
I still think social media has it’s place. As you alluded to in your report, I think a “social-teaching” slant could make a difference.
Glad to have you back John, now I’m waiting for your interview with Tony to arrive:)
Best regards,
Stew

thanks for the free report. honesty is refreshing. the update about google getting into the self-serve display ads online and sharing the idea about PPC to uncover lead sources and then deal direct for ad space was more than worth the time and effort to download and read it. I liked getting to know John Reese as a real person, not the genius guru. As a previous poster said, “welcome back”. It seems like you are returning to the “authentic” John Reese. I don’t agree with you about social networking though… I think your opinion reflects a a marketer’s first impression of the value of social networks. I think as I learn more about it, that social networks are evolving because people want to “filter out” exactly the kind of tricksters you were talking about in your report, and it’s logical to do that online in a community of friends with an established trust factor. I think, contrary to your opinion, that business people relying too heavily on email and not adapting to the changing online social networking environment will be the ones who are in trouble. Anway, thank you again for the free report and insights - keep it real.
October 13th, 2009 at 8:47 am
Thanks John for your many years of insight into IM. You’ve helped me make thousands and I want to say thanks.

Great report John. Your stories have great lessons. I agree with you 100% on social media and the advice about Google is spot on. This information can work wonders in niche markets and I think it can greatly increase business and profits. Thanks for sharing it.
October 13th, 2009 at 9:06 am
Hey John,
Great Report! Everything is right on point! Keep us up to date on when Google will be releasing their new DoubleClick ad serving solution! That is going to be a game changer for sure being that they spent $3 BILLION on it!
Thanks, Bryan Dulaney
October 13th, 2009 at 9:10 am
People will always look for the flaws in others before they look at the flaws within themselves. A lot of that stems from jealousy (haters). You have achieved something that most wish they could achieve and probably could if they simply applied themselves.
Your report made me think alot about how I have advertised over the past year. I was aware of the new FTC ruling and will probably remove all testimonials from my advertising.
I have to admit that I did think the same thing when I saw you “pimping” other affiliate products. Nothing wrong with making money but the product needs to be credible. I think people tend to place successful marketers (gurus) on a pedestal. We all make mistakes. You are human and you’re going to make mistakes.
I rarely read a report from beginning to end. Your report was full of useful content and I appreciate your honesty.
Thank you.

I hope that FTC will rule out these scare tactics too.

Thanks for such an honest insight into “John Reese”. It is amazing and at times very cruel when we make assumptions about someone based on their public personae. I had you down as being stand offish. Didn’t occur to me that you were introverted.
How very foolish of ME. Really like the person we just met.
I read your report at one sitting …rare for me. It was very good, down to earth and actually downright enjoyable. Truth is a great thing when there is so much hype around.
I have tired of Twitter as it seemed to be a one way conversation. Don’t want any more upbuilding quotes for a while and definitely not so many bitlys even though that is a great service. Conversation with just yourself can be a lonely prospect !
It is also uplifting when a “guru” even a reluctant one at that, will admit that he got something wrong, the case being about the mindset course.
I look forward to what you may be bringing out in the future John and thanks for the honesty.

Hi John
Thanks for a great report where you share your own experiences and are returning to be real and authentic. My take on this report is that there are still lots of money to be made and the info product industry is absolutely one of the best places. And dont listen to naysayers who tell you they have no money and are constantly negative. In these troubled times you seek out the people that supports you and want to do business, if you provide true value and are an authentic living person.
With reports like this, you tell others that you also are a living soul with the same problems and victories like the rest of us.

Hey John,
Thanks for releasing this report, for free!
I really enjoyed reading it. I’m going to print out a copy and read it once again. You have some great insights and I read every single word on this blog…
2010 is going to get tougher, but the strongest will survive!

Hello John
Thank you for the update on the FTC, that could cause some serious problems for many site owners. I really appreciate your direction in the report and believe it to be on track.
Best of everything to you, yours, and your new venture.

[…] Early this morning John Reese released a 23 page report about Internet Marketing 2010…And The Road Ahead…. […]
October 13th, 2009 at 10:04 am
Hi John,
I approached your ‘Road Ahead 2010′ report with some expectation of a little oversell, like, “the markets going to be demanding that, so you’d better buy this, from me”.
I’ve got to say, I was surprised. What I found was good common sense and a little thinking-things-through that most of us don’t do.
Yes there are things to watch out for, and things to prepare for. There’s also some pretty good “Oops! Don’t mess up like I did advice which comes across as both honest and refreshing”.
I loved the feedback stories from your subscribers following the MoneyMindset change. I unsubscribed from one of the big names in IM yesterday, no, not big - one of the gigantic names - simply because every mail I get from that person is a sales pitch or a product plug. I understand they have a commercial operation but they don’t understand that I’m not their personal ATM point!
Enough for now. Great report John, and now back to work!

Hi
Thanks for an excellent offering. I have become very disenchanted with most of the marketers who basically simply send out incessant emails about stuff to buy; and I have been stung twice with people offering “free” trials for a month which I then could not get cancelled when I found them to be not what I needed. The most recent of these is Tony Robbins Moneymasters..a glossy offering with little value imo, which so far I have been unable to cancel in spite of various efforts to do so. I will not be doing ANY more free or $1 trials unless from someone I know will do as promised, like Kern or you.
A question which I have not seen anyone address but which you touched on in your report..how do you know if the affiliate product is any damn good? I hate the idea of trying to market something that maybe looks good but isn’t, and I certainly can’t afford to buy everything out there to check it all out first.
Thanks for your report and all you have done for those of us who are struggling to make some sense of all of this internet marketting thing.

John,
Thanks for being so transparent and sharing the warts along with the big wins!
It’s very encouraging to us that are just getting started.

I thoroughly enjoyed the report John and especially found great value in your revelations of failed ventures,.. made me feel more normal and self forgiving.
Re social media,.. well said and right on the money. I noticed about 6 weeks ago that several smart people that I was following on Twitter that had 6 months earlier been raving about it had since discovered that site visitors and conversions being directed from Twitter was only 1 to 2% of referred visitors and yet they (site owner) were spending 40 to 50% of available time working that medium. I’ve since really slacked off and noticed my focus and productivity is really on the increase.
Good insights regarding Google and the self managed banner ads,.. one to watch. I’m currently putting a lot of research into keyword mining and honing in on words and phrases with good search and low competition and then building my sites (all on Wordpress 2.0) around that. The main motivation for that is previous massive losses in Adwords and the need to bootstrap my efforts and work on a very limited budget but to a more finely (ultimately very precisely) tuned marketing effort and I’m sure many of your readers will be able to relate to that.
Cheers John,.. thanks for the open insights..keep them coming,- still subscribed!

John…I took the time to read the whole report…thanks for the great information…it truly is valuable especially in light of the new FTC rules … Hope folks pay attention to the fallacy of “Fake It Till You Make It”… it just doesn’t work….everything becomes so transparent so quickly on the internet…Thank you for YOUR transparency…Looking forward to more great stuff from you !!

Hey Sensei.
Looks like you’ve really gone down the road most traveled.
I really was beginning to get worried about you…I had no idea you had fantasies about regenating the original Nissan Skyline, now the Ubber GTR.
I digress…
I’ve just scoped the posts from the entire Universe on this blog, and no one, not a soul, seems to disagree with you or offer an alternate thought… I just wonder how good they are as IMs.
Money will tell I guess.
As for your comments on Development… I’m still shocked to note you actually found a development team online and did not meet with them face to face where huge amounts of money were concerned!
Pretty dumb move if you ask me.
I’ve worked in call centers here in the US… and I can understand how that move was made… people ask the most basic of questions when they call Call Centers… without the use of basic common sense.
But I am not referring to you now John.. just a passing comment.
I’m in Software development myself… or at least I was until I hit the IM scene..
If you have to outsource.. I’d say India is overrated.
I’ve used South Africa before…and with sterling results.. the nation is a former British colony, they speak perfect English, (golly, they produced a Billionaire that made it to the moon).
They abide by international law so, if you get stung…call in Interpol, end of story.
Doesn’t hurt at all to confess I am a native of South Africa too….
My thoughts on the iPhone app business.
I think the iPhone apps are going the way of Wordpress…ubiquitous and divergent models (like themes).
Eventually one would be able to get most apps for free..and I don’t see Apple sustaining a model of purchasing apps at premium to offer their market base etc.
Any mass desired app eventually becomes too common and, before you know it, and it’s already happening now with the basement coders creating apps for iPhone and other gizmos… I think you might go the way of the Skyline/GRT again…
I stand corrected.
Web 2.0 sites…
It’s a well known fact getting social site folk to leave the confines and comforts of their networks to your site to purchase anything is probably the most difficult to accomplish. Anyone who thinks otherwise is purely delusional.
You move to SD…purrfect move…but I still think you should stick with what made your name..IM… nothing wrong with pursuing your passion, but you are known as John Reese in IM circles because of what you’ve accomplished.
Look at Arnie… multiple times World Body Builder..accomplished but, as a Gov, sucks!
My 2 cents’ worth.

John,
Great report, thanks for sharing. This answers a lot of questions — I was wondering what was up with that car project, why Income.com was so slow to actually launch and what happened to your normal approach of sharing good stuff with your list. I love the frank honesty in the report on lots of various topics. I don’t know you personally yet but you seem like a person of really high integrity and that’s what friends who know you say.
I think your Adwords advice for affiliates depends on the affiliate’s merchant loading the affiliate’s Adwords conversion tracking pixel on the confirmation page — some will, some won’t, at least in my experience.
Good luck in the next phase of your work as you move more towards software and movie projects!

Hey John,
Just downloaded and read your report.
Great content buddy. It’s nice to actually hear someone that’s considered an authority in the IM Industry talk about their failures as well as what they would do differently.
I believe more money could be made by the people just getting started on line if more authorities were truly honest and open about their trials and tribulations!
To Your Continued Success,

Thanks John….great to see you back to your old self.
I always learn so much from your content, and I truly appeciate the time and
effort it must take so please continue teaching. I realize the years of experience cannot be bought, but it sure helps when you share your insights about projects that maybe didn’t turn out quite as expected. The tips on time management and google are surely appreciated! Do you ever look at the 80/20 principle in regards to your metrics? Thanks for sharing and and keep up the great work.

WOW! What a great report, I am not sure how I ended up on your list but I am glad I did. I will definitely be spending some time reading through your blog.
Of course finding that time is a whole other story!
Thanks again!

John,
I read your whole report and sincerely believe it NOT to be a waste of time. I now have 2 years experience on the web and really appreciate your experience. I was impressed with your comments about social media and adwords. I have spent a lot of money on adwords and am still trying to figure it out.
Good Luck to you in the future. I would like to remain in touch for additional thoughts and products.
All the best,

John,
Good report, thought provoking, interesting read. I don’t agree with quite a bit but nevertheless a good read.
I particularly disagree with your advice about removing ALL testimonials following the FTC new ruling. Whilst this drastic action will probably mean you won’t infringe their new regs and obviously you’re free to choose how you run your business, but to suggest everyone else does it is unnecessary.
You’d be throwing the baby out with the bath water.
Social proof is still an enormously important and effective marketing tool - you know that. By all means remove testimonials that make specific claims that are nigh impossible to prove, but to clear your sites of ALL testimonials would be a major mistake for very many online businesses.
In my opinion, this advice is lazy. It’s a coverall, over-protective, knee-jerk reaction. Given your level of influence and the loyalty of some of the folk that follow you, to advise this is, I believe, irresponsible.

Hello, John,
As always, you provide solid content, interesting case studies, personal tragedies as well as personal triumphs and some thought-provoking commentary. I have been a John Reese fan since the times I got to spend with you at Armand’s seminar in 2003… you are one brilliant, caring and amazing young man.
Your report was very well written, well thought-out, and I also contend that social media can be a HUGE time vampire… and yet agree that it still has the power to be a good marketing tool if we don’t let it overtake our days and steal time away from other important areas.
What advice do you give to budding marketers who don’t have an outsourcing budget? Meaning, which area of your business should a person most strongly focus on, since there’s no way to study stats in depth, and create your own websites and blogs, and do *all* of the multitudinous other things necessary to maintaining a thriving business online. There are only 24 hours in a day.
Thank you for sharing & caring,
Donna

I’ve never seen so many people blowing one person in one spot. Seems everything you SOLD to people you are now advocating against and in my mind, that’s not just scamming it’s just downright dirty business.
You sold Traffic Secrets 2.0 which was based nearly all on Social Media and now you’re saying it sucks. Are you going to process a refund for every single person who bought that money-grab? Just curious.
Fake it till you make it.
Hmm. Sound a lot like your IMA Course and everything you taught?
Are you going to refund all those people too?
I’d like to see you do it ALL proactively. Every single person and every last dime. At least put the offer out there to every single customer.
I know I’d like a refund on nearly everything I’ve purchased from you. You’re all over the board. Do it and man up.
October 13th, 2009 at 11:39 am
John,
Great report - I appreciate your wisdom…as I have made many of the same mistakes - it’s encouraging to know, I am not the only one who blows it sometimes.
And doesn’t it just SUCK when you DON’T underpromise and overdeliver…
just hurts inside when you are focused on serving your clients and you screw it up.
I have blown that one as well more than once…but as Paul said, Phil 3:13 - forget that which lies behind, and focus ahead.
Enjoy La Jolla - a beautiful town.
And may God continue to bless you & your businesses.
Where is no risk - there is no faith…keep stepping out John.

Hey John,
Just read the report. I am new to you internet marketing, just purchased access to
Opportunity.com. In this site you offer a lot of advice / strategies that
appear to be from your past. In fact, one of the advice you offer in your training is
“outsource everything”. Clearly from this report, you don’t believe that to be true.
I had a hard time believing it myself.
So the real question I have is, now with your new perspectives, and a fresh outlook
on internet marketing…are you going to re-vamp the training material in
opportunity.com? To use your words..”serve your customer”..well, I am your customer
and right now, the content in opportunity.com, is outdated, diminished in value to me,
and above all..doesn’t serve me.
So what now??
October 13th, 2009 at 11:51 am
Dude.
Don’t you get it? That’s all part of “faking it till you make it.”

I have been a follower of your great information for a while now, but I must admit I haven’t been keeping up with all the emails that “GURUS” send because it is the same as the last..For some reason this email of yours caught my attention. After reading your report I must say that you are one that I will be continuing to read. I really appreciate all the great information and honesty you provided in it.
Thanks Again!!

I got nothin’.
Thanks for writing it. I enjoyed reading it. You’re awesome.

Thanks for the report John, great job.
I agree that social media (esp. Twitter) can be a MAJOR time drain and you’ve got to be super careful with it.
I also appreciated your advice on the new FTC rules and was actually already thinking of taking my testimonials down so that makes sense to me.
Love how you share the good, bad and ugly

True true true, social sucks. It is fun can produce some traffic but not nearly targeted enough to be measurable.
FTC will hopefully create a gap, and like a lot of the G slaps clear out some rubbish.
October 13th, 2009 at 1:15 pm
Good info for sure John. I never did understand social media
October 13th, 2009 at 1:19 pm
Great report and I agree with just about everything you say. Although I have been in internet marketing for nearly 7 years (and still am not making a living in it), I have discovered that keeping things simple and staying with the basics is an albeit slow but steady way to reach your goal. Social media may have it’s place, but it really is a time drain and not worth the effort, IMO. SEO has been the biggest boon to my business. Even though I only generate about $500/mo. from 3 web sites, it is all with organic traffic. I would really like to hear more about the new FTC regs and exactly how it affects affiliate marketing especially with direct link PPC campaigns. I know a lot of people don’t do direct linking anymore, but I still have luck with it for a number of products. I hope you will expand on this issue.
October 13th, 2009 at 1:27 pm
Great report!
Two question?
1) I subscribed to Money Mindset, you said you are going to refund, when?
2) I subscribed to opportunity.com , still a good product? I should keep my subscription?
Best, Roman

Hi John,
Interesting report, enjoyed it. I was wondering what you had been up to. I bought your Traffic Secrets course and found it to be well laid out and informative. Truthfully though, I was already doing most of what you taught, as is the case with most of these courses I buy. What did stand out however, was your ability to present the material in an honest, straightforward fashion. You came across as someone who was genuine and who knew their material. With regards to social media, I think you are selling it short a little. No it’s not the miracle marketing tool some may say it is, but used properly, with the right foundation in place, it can be an integral part of an overall Internet Marketing strategy. Zappos seems to be using it effectively, as are some other companies. I think your presentation skills are excellent, and that if you combined them your knowledge and a social media strategy in a way like Garry V did you would do quite well. The one thing I would keep in mind though - social media requires two-way participation to be most effective
Good luck and keep up the great work! I’ll be following your projects with interest! George
October 13th, 2009 at 1:54 pm
John,
nice report. Good solid stuff.
You don’t have to apologise for selling high end products. There’s all sorts of stuff out there available at all sorts of prices. People can get by…we’re a resourceful bunch.
Jim Rohn (one of the very greatest business thinkers in the last 100 years and a truly wonderful man) tells people this: “Don’t say it’s too expensive - say I can’t afford it.”
Then get off your a** and go do something about it. Ferraris aren’t too expensive - I just can’t afford one. But there’s other options. I’m working my way towards a Ferrari. And bitchin’ that I can’t have one now ain’t gonna help! Same with your products. If people want an awesome high end product they shouldn’t expect to pay a low end price.
And why shouldn’t people opt in to get your stuff. You’re in business! They want the free stuff…so opt in people. Or don’t get the free stuff!!!
You’re awesome - and sometimes your feedback is BS from the bottom 20% you should just dump!
October 13th, 2009 at 2:08 pm
Hi John,
Thanks for the rant (sorry … report) it was an entertaining read.
The social media position is great and one I’ve been advocating for a while.
Sites like Ping.FM and FriendFeed.com let you aggregate your other work (blog posts, videos, bookmarks…).
Taking advantage of these tools to aggregate your presence is a much better use of your time, rather than constantly updating and monitoring them.
I actually recommend twice a week for 1 hour - even less than you do.
The rest should be on auto pilot or you’re just not leveraging the web properly.
I have to admit, while I don’t want you to fail John, it does give me some comfort that someone with as much experience as you can still launch bum business ideas and loose your shirt.
A: it proves that no matter how talented you are as a marketer, you still have to have your business fundamentals in line or you will simply implode.
B: it reinforces my belief that entrepreneurs are a certain type of person and that they will continue to invent, launch and promote new business ideas … no matter what happens to the global economy.
Finally, (sorry to hog your comment space here) as someone that manages a team of coders and does both inhouse and service work, I couldn’t agree with you more about building your own team.
Those that advocate outsourcing everything are missing the value of a good team that communicates well and has experience working with each other.
There is a cost to maintaining your own team, but in the end, you are able to react much more quickly and efficiently if you have inhouse resources that are trained to think like you do.
The end value of that team is much more valuable than any one product that they can create.
Once you’ve built your engine, it becomes much easier to replicate it, rather than assembling and managing new teams of people for each new project.

To the one who responded to my post….that doesn’t help me very much. What I
want to know is what this new Internet Marketing direction means.
Fake it till you make it, suggests that John started off scamming knowingly.
I don’t believe that to be true in John’s case. I think the internet and how people use
it has changed in the last few years. What worked for him 5 years ago, clearly is not working
in this day and age..and going forward..as John suggests in his report.
Quite understandable.
The point being..what does this new direction mean for John’s existing customers??
October 13th, 2009 at 2:31 pm
Hi John, and you know I love you but I have to disagree on the social media. Twitter has changed the way I do business in a way no other space or place has. I’m a woman and want you to know that there are 3 of us working on twitter today and some of us are seeing 250k paydays. (kinda girls club of sorts)
There are strategies and ways to do these things and most people are failing because they don’t care what they post on twitter or the friends they invite to their twitter home. Most of the twitter guru products out there are wrong in how they go about it while we (us women) take over and do things differently and see money being made hand over fist.
Yes I understand your point about social media it takes up time but in the end we need it for final results. I’m not saying twitter is for everyone or facebook for that matter, I’m saying they are extremely important avenues and if you take it out of your teachings you’re leaving a very valuable place for people to make money and gain leads.
Yes you can get lost in the mess of social media, yes it can take up your time… If you go about it the wrong way. I would say 98% of people who do social media marketing get it all wrong in seconds of starting. And I want to say some of these guru’s teaching right now are way off the mark. I personally sometimes laugh at what they are teaching people, to the point where I get very angry because of the misleading information they give to twitter folks and facebook folks.
As always, what you give is much more than expected John and I admire that about you. But as you said in your report some of us social media users will get upset at what you have to say.
you know what, I’m not upset and if I see a drop in my use of social media marketing then I know it’s over, until then I will continue to use it at it’s finest moment.
Hugs,
Mya

Thanks for the great article. What is your view of measuring impressions rather than clicks, considering that recent research has shown that (for example) banner ads are almost never clicked?
October 13th, 2009 at 3:42 pm
Thanks for all sincerity in your report John!
You are one of the few marketers that don’t send us only affiliate links but wise content.
October 13th, 2009 at 4:16 pm
Thanks, John.
I am new on Internet Marketing and currently coping up to make a website using free html editor. You know, I don’t want to spend money and too much time as I am just a stay at home mum. Once my internet business earns, that’s the time I’m going to spend PPC ads, internet courses, etc… Also, I am not into network sites like facebook, twitter, etc… since they were created. I’ve been invited to join them but filling up forms take time plus when you’re in there takes another time chatting nonsense. So, basically, they are waste of time.
With regards to FTC, as newbie, I don’t have testimonials except my own testimonial on my About Me page. So, that ruling is a good thing.
Keep up the good work! Your mom and dad are so blessed to have you as a grateful son.
October 13th, 2009 at 4:18 pm
I’ve learned a lot from John’s free reports. I’ve never purchased any program from him directly but learned enough principles from him to get our site listed on page 1 of Google for hundreds if not thousands of excellent keywords pertaining to our industry. John’s advice has turned our company around and has allowed us to grow again in this time of economic difficulty.

Hey John,
If I could rewind time and do a few things over, I’d probably be a gazillionaire, but life is supposed to be full of bumps, bruises, tumbles, successes, wins, luck and fun. That’s how we learn and grow.
Thanks for having the juevos to include some of the things you did in that report. That’s what’s cool about you. You’re authentic and sincere.
You know what I’ve found. The more high profile you get, the more responsibility you’ll get, the more criticized you’ll get, the more people you get to help.
Luckily for you…when you win, you win BIG. Big enough to fund the next few flops that lead you to the next super BIG win.
When one window closes, God always opens another one. (At least, that’s how it’s always been for me.)
All the best.

re: Preacher meet choir. *I* made this exact mistake in the 1990s. I had

all went online I?d be rich. The problem is it?s hard enough to do ONE web
site right. My plan FLOPPED.

Once again, thanks for sharing. At least you have helped me changed my direction for good.
You have no idea.
Enough ranting!

Ed Dale, John Reece and Frank Kern gave the first IM seminar I ever attended about 4 years ago (in Australia).
While it took a couple of years to properly develop my online/offline business these guys were the start of a wonderful new life in my 50’s.
Great blog post John. I don’t feel as bad about running a conventional business which focuses on customer service now I read about your struggle. With all your marketing knowledge it didn’t work out.
We are a small business doing good figures combining IM, service and good products.
We need smart guys like you so good to see you back.

Thank You

John, thanks for sharing your personal experiences. You are always passionate, honest and straight forward in your talking. I agree that among all IM masters, you are probably still the Ferrari, Neiman Marcus and Tiffany! So keep up the good stuff and protect your brand. Content is everything - this is simply the best advice.

Hi John, congratulations on continued success and looking forward to your Mindset product. I’ve had a similar experience hiring a person from Romania, and after hearing what happen to you this confirms my feelings. Now I make sure to get a referral.
I agree with everything in your report. I’m glad someone finally is bringing SM to the table. I didn’t have the guts to say it as you did but you laid it out perfectly. Thank You, Thank you dude! (You’re living in Cali now so I guess I can say “dude” right? )
Btw, I have the same car you won and sold. It collects dust but it’s a very sentimental item for me.
Thanks again.

You strike me as defensive in your report. This is not right … I do not know why you listen to those who ‘drink the hater-aid’ as Gary Vaynerchuk would say.

Hi John,
Excellent report! This is the type of stuff that made you famous! I remember in 2004 and 2005 you use to do this type of stuff all the time! Glad to see you’re going back to it.
Regarding the FTC, I don’t know if I would go as far as to say eliminate testimonials completely. What you DO want to do though is eliminate all PERFORMANCE BASED testimonials (i.e. I brought this course and made $50,000 in one month.) There’s nothing wrong with non performance based testimonials (i.e. I brought this course and it was the best course I ever brought on internet marketing). However, if people aren’t sure of the difference, just eliminate them completely to be safe.
Regarding social media, I don’t know if I would say that it is a waste of time. It all depends on how you use it. For me, I use it to meet people and to consolidate my markets and build a following. I spend no more than a hour a day on it from a business prospective (Mafia wars is another story LOL). It is also great for syndicating content as you pointed out.
I also love the fact that you are so open and honest. It’s very refreshing and that’s always one of the things that I admired about you. You aren’t afraid to share the mistakes that you made as well as your successes. In many cases, we can learn more from your mistakes than we can from your successes.
Finally, don’t let the HATERS get you down. Always remember a dog doesn’t bark at a parked car! People aren’t going to like you regardless of what you do so rather than worry about what your haters think, focus on what your true customers and the people who love and respect you think and you will be fine!
October 13th, 2009 at 10:18 pm
Also one more thing regarding social media. Somebody is obviously making money from it and it’s not just gurus teaching people how to make money from social media.
However, social media is nothing like traditional marketing and advertising mediums. EVERYTHING on there is about relationship building and when you try to rebel against that fact, you waste time and don’t make any money.
October 13th, 2009 at 10:36 pm
Bloody excellent John!
Thanks for clarifying & confirming the direction of my business … love your thoughts and earnest approach to life, not just marketing.
Love to meet one day and share yacht stories, but since I’m an introvert too …
You’d be welcome at our place for a beer on the deck (sub-tropical queensland) and share a few observations & a quiet joke or two …

Been following John’s movement since 2004,… one main differences between you and other marketers..you position yourself nearer to your customers. From your blog, DVD and courses can see your sincerity on sharing your knowledge, and also showing us part of the real you.
Sad to say, it’s not easy to find marketers with similar x-factor.
Customers are brighter and smarter as years goes by …. just like goole adword, the keyword here is “real” …. “real” search, “real” product, and “real” you.
Wish you more success in the coming years.
Regards,
Caine

John -
Years ago I signed up for the “Reese Report” and canceled after a few months. I didn’t see the value of the information. I’ve read the negative comments about TS2 and watch income.com never materialize. So, I figured you’re were toast.
The reality is… I experienced the similar events.
I’m selling a huge commercial property that I had no business in. It cost me a lot of money and time away from my other core ventures.
I lost contact with my own lists.. like you.. and now I have to get it back.
After reading your new “Roadmap”, I can say - I’m in your shoes and it empathize with you.
Now I expecting better and greater things from you and myself.
I wish you the best on moneymindset even though I missed out on it.
I cannot be a critic because I’m recovering just as you are.
Cheers John.

John is the rational voice of internet marketing. No hype, no fuss, no bother, no get-rich-quick schemes. He proposes a no-nonsense, focused, nose to the grindstone approach to building a REAL business. The new legislation is a mark of the coming of age of the web and I am certain John is right that it will wipe out a lot of fly-by-night operators, and change, for the better, the relationship between marketers and web-users. As for social media…..so much to say, so little time!

I’m just a beginner, so I can’t judge about the value of your advice and whether you’re right or wrong in this or that.
But I do appreciate you’re talking so honestly both about your successes and failures. You have that very important quality which is called integrity. And that’s why I do trust you and your advice.

I just wanted to say that your report was a very realistic view and that is much appreciated. I too made some very bad business decisions and have come out of it all thankfully. We’re all going to make mistakes here and there, that’s just life. It’s what we do with the experience of it all. Thanks for the report, I’m surprised I read the whole thing.

Great read, John.
You’re human after all, just like the rest of us who have slogged it out building a business, making mistakes but just keeping at it!
IM is no different from any other business. There is NO quick buck to be made, at least not for 99.99% of the people out there. It’s just dedication, persistence and a certain amount of insanity to keep on plugging away, all the time learning from here, from there until you finally become an OVERNIGHT success.
It’s amazing how LUCKY people get after 15, 20 or 25 years!
Must be some sort of SECRET system!
Thanks for the report!
October 15th, 2009 at 2:05 pm
WOW! John Reese as always you come with some REAL, straight from the heart stuff. I to had similar up’s and downs in my I.M. business and I made the same mistakes more than once. Along with my list, my customers, my people.
I also agree with ya on the social media but and a BIG BUT, I have made quit a bit of change with it, but yes your right to many people spend to much time on it instead of putting that energy into what really counts…
Those negative remarks, It use to bother me so much and it still does at times but I take it as fuel. If it’s a legit complaint I will make it better, if not well you know better then anyone, some folks you will never ever please no matter what you do or say.
In my opinion this report was awesome, true and straight to the point. It’s also kinda weird this report and I will tell ya why. We met once at the Izea fest last year here in Orlando where I also live. And alot of what you said in this report you actually told to me back then. It’s amazing because it lets me know that your truly a man of beliefs, integrity and you actually live and believe what you preach.
Thanks John Reese.

John, awesome report! I hope you’ll share more of your stuff for free in the future as you’ve done it a few years ago. Your reports are always so much fun to read, but also contain a lot of very valuable stuff. I totally agree with you on the social media stuff. I’ve cut down my time I use for SM down to 15 minutes a day and invest more time with PPC. Can’t wait until you release your new MM course!!!
October 15th, 2009 at 3:09 pm
Loved the report, and glad to hear you’re back on track working hard on new projects. I know the content will be great.
I agree with you that it takes a lot of hard work to serve your market and not just sell to it. I have always put a great emphasis on good customer service and believe it is one aspect that has helped me be successful online.
I sell physical products but got a lot of information out of Traffic Secrets that was so useful. Good idea to refocus on core online sites and not get too scattered. I agree I end up unfocused–the saying “jack of all trades but master of none” applies.

Thank -you for the informative report. Sorry to hear about your $350.000 loss - right it off against tax :0)
Although social media appears to be the ‘Buzz’ word at the moment and undoubtedly has its place - I totaly agree that limiting your time spent on it is good advice.
Appreciated the comments and tips on google adwords and PPC, something that I am yet to master. Ans I look forward to the advertising avenues that are coming up.
Well done again.

Your report is a concise and clear guide with valuable advice for those of us who want to grow an online business or like me, start one. Yes, there is a lot to learn and even much more work to do… I am happy to learn, that some of my appreciations and thoughts on Social Media were not off-track, I agree with your views about it. Absolutely great report. You really hit the nail on the head about what people should focus on i.e. SERVING their market. The tips you gave re: social media and google etc. were pure gold in my opinion.

P.S. Loved the style of the report. It was easy to read and packed full of great content. More please! (even if it’s not a full blown report).

Isn’t human nature amazing? Breaking your own rules just reconfirms the axiom that we make our decisions emotionally and justify them “logically” - later.
It’s so humbling being human ;>)
Another example is in investing. I’ve got a number of friends that totally understand the rules of smart investing. And yet they allowed themselves to violate their number one rule: “don’t lose money - activate your stop loses.” One friend let a broker talk him out of this to the tune of a 50% loss. Thanks to that, he doubled his money in eight years and gave it all back in less than 6 months! That was a $100,000 lesson!
It’s so humbling being human ;>)

John,
Screw this blog. It’s a time waster and the weight of the feedback is complimentary or critical. In other words, no valuable content. Maybe SEO value…maybe - at best.
These comments represent a tug of war between fans and critics. That’s all.
I know you won’t read this, but in my opinion, you need to start fresh. Set new business goals. Analyze your assets and liabilities. Find your market again.
For that matter - decide whether you want to still be a voice in IM. If so, then produce. If not, then move on while you still have a good rep.
The only thing you have to offer is not information, nor products. The unique thing that John Reese can offer is his perspective on online marketing. The products and information come out of that. Go back. Find that paradigm. Find the market that is needy. Produce out of that mindset.
Oh yeah, “Money Mindset” blows as a title. Get Carlton to help you come up with another one.
Yesterday is a memory.
Tomorrow is a dream.
Today is potential wrapped in curiosity.
Peace,
Nick

Thanks for this great report. I’m just started to study Internet Marketing and this report will help me a lot in learning to make a business online and earn money. God bless.
October 18th, 2009 at 8:04 pm
Johnny boy… I agree with you 100%. I have also learned that…
1) You must feed one beast, and focus on one business to create success. And I have a new rule… If I have not tried to give up completely on any one business at least 10 times then I have not given it enough (this does not apply to one where I am dumping cash, just time committment). It also kinda goes with John Carltons 10,000 hour rule (something like that). You need to put the time in to find out what does and doesnt work. Nothing in life worth having comes easy!
2) I cant stand social media marketing. But then again, Im also not a sports fan, so when I’m not working, last thing im doing is twitting or screaming at my television.
3) As an introvert myself, not a big fan of doing seminars, webinars, or even teleseminars. But this all ties back to my goals for my internet business which is time freedom as much as (if not more than) financial freedom… and living out of a suitcase or slaving to JV’s is NOT fun.
4) I am now a firm believer (been doing this for 8 years and only recently have created real success online in the last 2 years)… that if you cannot convert paid traffic with your online business… then find another niche/business. If your business requires affiliates or JV’s to produce an income, then be prepared… sooner or later you will have to start over. And if you are relying on top search engine rankings, or youtube videos to send you traffic… its a matter of time before you find yourself starting over again as well. Converting paid traffic is the KEY to long term consistant profits.
Great report John. Glad to know that there is a “guru” out there that thinks as I do!

October 18th, 2009 at 10:20 pm
You raise some interesting points in your report John, some that I have pondered on for quite a while.
Like some of the others here, I stopped reading emails from “Guru’s. I just became sick and tired of being pitched to, over and over again, not by one but by all the well named marketers, mostly on the same day, all selling another big name latest release, big launch, or whatever they were doing to get another million dollar day.
Most of them didn’t care whether they were talking to beginners or advanced marketers, and the story doesn’t change. More emails endorsing and selling other peoples stuff, and a lot of it just rubbish. I came to the conclusion that having made their own money and getting a name for themselves, all they had to do to rake in more money was send out emails to a gullible email list. Glad you woke up.
It’s time that the IM big names put themselves back in the same place as many of their followers, and start to really help them on the path to success, and with up to date and affordable information.
Perhaps NOW would be a good time to take a look at the training in Opportunity .com. just to make sure your loyal subscribers are getting the best you can offer.
I’m one of them by the way.
Thanks for the report. it was an interesting read.

Hi John,
Thanks for the insightful report. I can feel you’re wanting back into game of IM and retain back your crowd position as early days of your achievement. I agree with Nick say earlier that you should be clear and precise with your priority in IM world.
Even Sylvestor Stallone comes back with Rocky and Rambo movie after slumber for so long, he understands his core competency and best asset in life. What done is done, time to start afresh and come back with explosive marketing product and perspective of your insightful internet marketing guide.
Overall, it’s unusual report came from IM guru like yourself. I like it and still continue to support u. Keep the great work.

John,
Harris Fellman here - not sure you’ll read this; but not sure all the emails I have on you are any good either. I too want to be in the film biz and have recently been researching it quite deeply.
Anyway - I’m running indiefilms.com now (we’re changing the site over to a crowdfunding site) … in the midst of hiring a programmer now (I agree with you on the ‘don’t outsource to a development team’ front)…
I’ve been looking very deeply at the film industry.
At the indie level - it’s in the midst of collapse.
There are ways to make money - but its not much.
I’ve recently been presented with something that I think you’ll find very interesting though.
Either way - *talk to me* before shifting over to the film industry at all. I may be able to talk you out of it; and/or tell you about a way that I think it _can_ work.

nice to read johns candid report on his behind the scenes screw ups. We all know that despite this he is still very successful & that is a lesson in itself.
As for social media - I am a flamer and an online socialite - its my nature to tweet etc while I’m doing stuff.
One thing that John and everybody else is either missing or keeping secret at present is China.
More people online than you can shake a stick at - I intend begin learning the language next year. Not because I embrace the culture - or I dig chinese chicks or some other reason - but because I want to make money and tap vast new opportunities.
Online business will explode and make many billionaires in the China market over the next 5-10 years.
If I want to chase women & experience culture I’ll go to Europe - If I want to make some serious money I better learn to speak Mandarin Chinese fast.

I had to skip some parts as it takes too long to read - that is why I tend to agree with the social media part - it takes a lot of time. Focus on one thing as John says elsewhere. Although I am not making money yet it makes sense. Ewen Chia also stresses: FOKUS!!
Problem with banner ads - people ignore these millions of impressions. I know as I ignore most of them. I get a CTR like .017% for a FREE CPA offer that is exectly targeted - with a banner!

John,
This report made a lot of great points and shared a lot of useful content. I especially value what you said about new ways to generate traffic and the importance of building your expertise before you claim it online. Thank you.
The stories about your mistakes are helpful and interesting, and I’m grateful for your decision to share them publicly. That takes a lot of ego strength and self-confidence.
From one introvert (me) to another (you), I’ve also got to say, that the tone of parts of your report seemed to get a self-centered and defensive. In particular, I’m referring to the section on how you have to be very careful about what you post online. You spent a little too much time (about 2.5 pages) talking about how people have been bashing you online. By way of honest feedback, I like to read personal anecdotes and cautionary tales that illustrate important lesson. And I don’t mind reading a well-written rant. But I don’t want to read anything that looks or feels like regurgitation or personal ax grinding.
Thanks.

Thank john. It is really a honest report and this will help me a lot.

Thanks for the report John. A couple of things;
1. I totally agree with you on the social media thing. It’s time waster for anyone trying to build an online business.
2. FTC now wants me to disclose that I get paid for links on my blog?
3. You are totally right that the best way forward in IM is to serve your customers. It works in the offline business I run.
Great report. Just don’t do another samurai thing

First of all thanks for the report, it was interesting reading. I agree somewhat with the contents, although 1) if you aren’t spending the time on social media, it doesn’t appear to be of use (some are making a good penny, though) and 2) I don’t think the FTC has the manpower to view every one of the millions of sites that affiliates put out each year, so it will be, as usual, only the blatant abusers who get punished. The rest of us will be unaffected, I believe. By the way, the Nissan GTR is a hot car! I saw one recently and almost got wood…

thanks for this report.
just reading the first few pages is already a great slap to my face..and i think it applies to many of us..who just keep exploring various facets of int marketing, when the key is just to focus to succeed faster.
great info as usual. keep it up.

Why did you shut down http://www.trafficsecrets.com ????
And why did you not notify affiliate partners about this move? And why do you keep it shut down for WEEKS now?

John,
Great report. So common sense, yet often forgotten. Great to listen to your story and how we can ALL learn from our “mistakes.” I appreciate your sincerity.

After many countless sleepless nights, sleeping on the floor in a friend’s office, and after much trial and error, I developed an internet income system that, in one year, earned me a half million dollars.

Great read as usual John.
@Jecklin - I believe John shut it down cause it’s getting out dated, but he should have given a heads up to his affiliates… tsk tsk tsk

Refreshingly personal and honest Mr. Reese. I read the whole thing, and it’s 4:30 am. I’m retired, so I’ll sleep late this am, but the point is, it kept me interested when tired. I like the write like you talk approach, and it sounds as though you are true to yourself in your endeavors, and as a result the truth you know is reflected in the knowledge you share. Bravo.

Wow, that was a great read. Thanks!
I wish I had one solid idea for a home-run project but unfortunatly I only have ideas for “Mini-businesses”… I’m wondering if I should scrap them and go after the home-run as you suggested… ergg… decisions decisions….

Interesting report with good information. I would like to see more from you on traffic generation that does not include using Google. I agree with your take on social media and believe a lot of tweets are uneffective and ignored.

John, I like the honest opinion about your own projects, you always have such great content that I can share with my clients…hey every mentor has or had a mentor to learn from.
