5 Years Ago Today: The Million Dollar Day

Million Dollar Day

Today is the 5-year Anniversary of the “Million Dollar Day.”

On August 17th, 2004, I released the original version of my Traffic Secrets course and pulled in over $1,000,000 in sales in less than 24 hours.  And without spending any money on traditional advertising.

Up until that day, doing a million dollars in sales in a single day (for an individual) was unheard of.  Many thought that $100,000-$150,000 in a single day (which was still extremely successful) was about the ‘ceiling’ for what could be done.

But just like Roger Bannister breaking the 4-Minute Mile (which many thought would never be done) many others started to do it as well.  Today there are many high school athletes that can break a 4-minute mile.

And today in 2009, since that big day in 2004, many other Internet marketers have also had million dollar days and even multi-million dollar days.  I, myself, have done it again as well.

While certainly much of what contributed to these big days was ‘technique’ (which I’ll get to in a moment) a lot of it is simply MINDSET.

That barrier, just like running a 4-minute mile, was a MENTAL barrier as well as a physical one.  Often times before anyone accomplishes something for the first time it seems like it’s not possible.  Yet once something is accomplished, even if it’s extremely difficult, others seem to follow with similar success.

This is the same reason why if you take most self-made millionaires and take away everything they have that they’ll find themselves back on top in less than a year.  Yet so many other entrepreneurs that have never made a lot of money flounder around for many, many years before breaking through - and some never break-through.

If you want to make a lot of money in your life (even in a short amount of time) you need to get your MINDSET together.  And, no, I’m not talking about The Secret and the law of attraction.

It’s not enough to WANT a better life.  It’s not enough to be AMBITIOUS.  And it’s not enough to just work hard.

You have to have a conversation inside your own head about what’s really possible and what are you really capable of.  Only when you truly believe this capability (no matter what it is) are you on your way to achieving it.

So What Are You Truly Capable Of?

That’s the question you need to answer within yourself.

It’s also interesting to look back on that “Million Dollar Day” and observe HOW it happened from a technique and strategy standpoint…

For years many marketers repeated the mantra, “The money is in the list, the list, the list.”

I shocked a large crowd of marketers when I was on a conference panel in 2002 and I said, “Let me tell you the real secret…  the money is NOT in the list.  The money is in OTHER PEOPLE’S LISTS.”

One of the most powerful things about Internet Marketing is the ability to LEVERAGE the marketing assets of others - their customer and prospect lists, their traffic, their content, their relationships, their expertise.

I leveraged Affiliate Marketing and got a lot of partners to help promote my product and that was a big key to why it was able to break-through that $1,000,000 in a day barrier.

And while, yes, I had to pay my affiliate partners about 50% of any sales they referred, most don’t realize that my net profits were still very high.  Some like to think that the launch ended up only netting me about $300,000 or so after all commissions and other costs were paid.

That launch, in just the first few days, ended up NETTING me $1,000,000 in PROFIT.  Not sales.  And it continued to bring in cash flow for many months after the initial launch.

The total ‘end result’ from the launch itself will probably end up being worth $20MM or more.  That’s the power of LEVERAGE.

From a technique standpoint I came up with several tactics for that launch that are now being used today.  I was one of the first marketers to ever leverage a blog for SOCIAL PROOF.  During that original Traffic Secrets launch I was driving prospects to blog posts and their comments about “can’t wait to buy this!” were encouraging others to do the same.  I strategically leveraged those comments to create more FRENZY and get more people interested in buying the product - long before it was even released or people even knew an exact date it would be released.  A lot of marketers use this technique today.  And it still works great.

Another tactic I came up with was using great free content to ‘warm up’ my partners lists.  After all, most of those people didn’t have a relationship with me, or even know who I was, so it was very important that before a product of mine was put in front of them that they had a reason to be interested in what I had to teach.

I produced a special PDF report that my affiliates were able to hardcode and giveaway to their lists.  This played a MAJOR part of why the overall launch was so successful.  It greatly increased the conversion rate of people buying on launch day long before they ever saw a sales letter for the product or even know what all was in the course or how much it was.

Today practically every launch you have been exposed to gives away great content upfront before the product itself is promoted.  And today that PDF (which will still work) has evolved into VIDEO.  Reports and special hand-outs can still work well, though.

Throughout all of those techniques the power of ANTICIPATION is what helps build the buzz and demand.  Apple is a master of doing this with their product releases.  So anytime you can give your customers something to LOOK FORWARD TO it will increase the rate at which they buy.  The movie industry does this with movie trailers and release dates, and so does the music industry, car industry, and so many others.

If you aren’t using anticipation in your marketing you’re losing a lot of money.  So start thinking of different ways you can incorporate it.

Last but not least I just want to drive home the point that my historical Million Dollar Day accomplishment would not have happened without the involvement of my affiliate partners.  Relationships online are incredibly important.  If you want to leverage other people’s marketing assets like I mentioned, then you need to ‘play well with others’ in your market.  Sell other people’s stuff first, then try and build a relationship to get them to reciprocate to promote your products.

The most successful marketers online are working with others - across any industry you can think of.  The ones that end up making only a tiny percentage of what they could have are the ones that burn bridges with people (i.e. ruin relationships), get into fights with other people, and typically have a negative attitude.  It truly does come down to the difference in having an ABUNDANT mindset and a SCARCITY one as mentioned in the amazing book, Think And Grow Rich.

I hope this post has inspired you in some way to go out and create your own new record day of accomplishment.  Always remember, no matter what you currently think you’re capable of is not even close to what you truly can create.

    John,

Thanks for this retrospective. What a masterful combination of “marketing friends,” psychological triggers, and plain old HARD WORK. Thanks a million, literally.

  2. Kyle Richey Says:

    Hey John,

Congrats on looking back to your (in)famous 7-figure day!

It’s fantastic to see that just a few simple concepts applied in the correct order, leveraging the power of the Internet, can create so much wealth for so many people.

Great post, and keep cranking out awesome products, services and strategies for all of us. =)

    Thanks,

I’m astonished by the nepotism that goes on amongst these guys.

    “Hey, here’s the one.”

    “Sorry, I meant this.”

“No, no, I’m serious this time.”

Filsaime keeps trying to claim that he has re-invented water and that this is the one.

    This isn’t.

We all know that the gurus have hundreds of people in India working their “magic” for $4 an hour. That is the secret that NONE will really let on about.

And on and on it goes as we all strive to make a single dollar.

    Shameful.

  4. Karol Gajda Says:

I remember that day well John. As an affiliate, it was my first 5 figure day. :) Your abundance mindset was inspiring.

  5. Brett T. Smith Says:

    Hey John,

I remember that day and what a surprise it was to myself and a lot of Internet marketers.

We have learned a LOT from that launch and how to use leverage to exponentially increase our short and long term profits.

Looking forward to working with you someday!

I can’t wait to hear about (ahem…be) the first person to break the $10,000,000 ceiling. It can and it will be done.

  8. Ryan Wade Says:

    Congrats dude, and Happy Anniversary!

When are you going to break that piggy bank and spend it? … You did save it all right? ;-)

thank you for the great motivation and outlook on marketing.

this is one of the best blog posts you’ve written, (and they’re almost all awesome). This one really makes you think back to when this actually happened…. and how things have changed since.

  13. Rose Mis Says:

    John,

Thank you for sharing this “insider secrets” info…

Regardless of whether it is online, offline, MLM, network marketing, affiliate marketing, selling flowers, chiropractic services or funeral services…

It all starts with “MINDSET” and an unshakable belief that “I” can do this and a big enough “WHY” I am going to do this…in spite of what anyone else says or thinks, for that matter in spite of what I might be thinking at “one of those moments” …

You are one of the “Gurus” that I actually look forward to hearing from…

What you have accomplished is an inspiration and you always overdeliver with quality content…

    Thank you for everything…Rose

  14. David Smith Says:

    John,

I also remember that day. I purchased Traffic Secrets and still remember
my favorite thing you said on the DVD’s.

Where do you get traffic for your sites?

    You said…

    Everywhere you can….

I still have all the DVD’s and all the bonuses…

Maybe I will look at them again this when I get back to the mainland and see if things have really changed that much.

    Thanks For The Post

    David

  15. John Reese Says:

Thanks for all the great feedback, everyone!

BRAD - making $5,000 in 24 hours *IS* an amazing accomplishment. So congratulations. That’s more than most people earn in a MONTH. Now add a zero and go for a $50K day then keep moving higher! :)

  16. Seth W Says:

Pretty Impressive! Sounds like getting in on another big day would be extremely powerful! Good Luck to us all.

  17. Robert L Masesie Sr Says:

  18. Scott Brandon Hoffman Says:

    Hey John,

You brought up some really good points that I totally align with…and those are building key relationships by BEING OF SERVICE to other first, and NOT just looking for something in return.

And secondly, the whole law of attraction (while it does work quite well) requires a whole lot more than visualizing a big bucket of cash while chanting in your underwear all day (not that there’s anything wrong with chanting in your underwear…just sayin’).

Thanks for being “real” and sharing the tough love; I do the same thing brother, people need to hear the truth and not all the fluff that’s out there.

    Take care,
    Scott

  19. Jorge Diaz Says:

    Hey John

    Congratulations for the Anniversary!

Have learned a lot from you, and yes all of this requires work
not just desire and planting the seed to the universe.

The seed needs water and water is work. Thanks for the blog post and
    talk to you soon.

  20. David king Says:

    Great post John!

    I like the last part

“Always remember, no matter what you currently think you’re capable of is not even close to what you truly can create.”

    That statement is so true!

my business is growing faster than it ever has because I decided i wanted it too and i took action.

Congrats on a great product and a successful launch.

I look forward getting to know the leaders and mastermind marketers in this business.

    Hey John,

    Congrats!

    and thanks dude…

    or tactics.

“The money is in OTHER peoples lists” is one of
    those valuable insights.

And I promise that I will read it again.

    :)

Great advice from John Reese. The dude is an inspiration.

  25. Greg Poulos Says:

    John,

I remember buying Traffic Secrets when I was $25,000+ in debt. For me, it was my first exposure to direct marketing and IM techniques that actually worked. I spent two days taking tons of notes and watching every minute of the videos.

The “Special Report” PDF was pure gold, not only because it got me to buy Traffic Secrets, but because I used it as a model for my own product launches.

Thanks largely to Traffic Secrets, by the end of 2004 I was out of debt and had a 5 figure business, which has since grown into a 10 figure business and now my mind is set on figuring out to add another zero.

    thanks,
    Greg

  26. Wealthy Affiliate Premium - NEW Says:

    Very inspiring

Several Marketers drop their quality level after they got rich (and lazy).
They outsource most and even don’t check what’s sold with their label on it.

You are definitley a exception, alway delivering great content.

    Thank you very much.

    G.

  27. Changa G. Says:

    Hello John,

Stay at the front of the ‘pack’ with your insightful views. Building relationships and using leverage in your marketing go hand in hand. When you have taken the time to do your due diligence and provide immense value you will then benefit beyond your wildest dreams.

  28. Daniel Howard Says:

    Hi John

WOW very inspiring post, your strategy is what brought a lot of your success, you always have a great strategy to leverage with.

I see everyone doing the same thing now with launches, but there are even more marketing lessons to learn from as well, your mindset is key to success.

Thanks for the content you provided along with your good friend Frank Kern in the past

    Have a gooden

    Danny

  29. Melissa Says:

Loved this post! Extremely inspiring. Anyone can do this with the right mindset. It’s kind of like this analogy…if someone threw a diamond into a sandbox, would you look for it? Of course! It may take a little while to find it (or a long while), but you know it’s there. Just don’t give up. Be consistent and do the work (the right work).
    Thanks again!

  33. Stu McLaren Says:

    John,

I vividly remember that day with my inbox full of messages and the excitement levels sky high.

The pictures of you writing on the white board were priceless :)

One of the things I actually loved the most was the PDF you released AFTER the launch which explained everything.

Reading that PDF provided a lot of inspiration and it truly was a “4 minute mile” day.

We’ll always look back in “marketing history” and remember the “that day”.

Thanks for raising the bar and thanks for reminding us all of how far we can really go.

    All the best.

    Stu

  34. Karl Hummel Says:

    Hey John,

Thanks for the email that you sent me which directed me to this post. I found it very inspirational, as I am currently working on a project that I believe will eventually become the most popular viral marketing product ever released!

Your words of wisdom and encouragement are extremely insightful, and I thank you for sharing them with the Internet Marketing community!

    To Your Success!

  35. Hypnotic Blogger Says:

Coming up with our own product and get other super affiliates to promote it sounds very credible if our expertise lies more in our product development than marketing it.

This sparks off ideas. Thank you so much!

  36. @CoachDeb Says:

CONGRATS & thanks 4 breaking the Internet Marketing “ceiling” 5 yrs ago today John!

As I’m stressin’ out w/in the next 30 days to release my latest product - you just gave me the BEST Tip for me to focus on - which is “The Power of Anticipation” - I could’ve so easily overlooked this - in my efforts to work tirelessly behind the scenes to get it “perfect” before it’s ready - and yet - in doing so, would’ve lost a critical component.

    Thank You!
    You’ve just inspired me!
I’ll work on that Anticipation Video right away!
    @CoachDeb

  37. James Schramko Says:

this was one of the major catalysts for me going online. Thanks John.

  38. Charlie Paule Says:

Thanks for the inspiring post and the priceless information.

A lot of successful marketers have figured out the “warm-up” technique but I guess one has to hone these essential skills in order to really make it big.

    It’s all in the mind.

“Whether one thinks he CAN or he CANNOT, he is right.”

    Regards,
    Charlie Paule

  39. Jonathan Gunson Says:

    The ‘SECRET’?

Two blockbuster ideas say it all in this post John.

    ‘MINDSET’
    ‘OTHER PEOPLE’S LISTS’

You sure nailed it with those two.

    Jonathan

  40. Dr.Mani Says:

For my CHD list, I was drafting out a similar note - to mark this special occasion.

What makes John’s ‘Million Dollar Day’ more uniquely special to me is that it was followed up by a donation of $10,000 to my non-profit foundation - which sponsored heart surgery for 4 children.

I like what John says about MINDSET. That single donation broke barriers in MY mind.

Over the years since, I have not only donated more than that back to my foundation, I have donated the equivalent to another foundation that builds houses for the homeless in another desperately poor country halfway across the world.

And in the process of doing so, inspired many more entrepreneurs, start up business owners and infopreneurs to reach out for their dreams.

    That’s a RIPPLE.

One that started out in John Reese’s mind, reaches across a globally networked world to touch and resonate with other people, inspires them to live up to their potential, and in turn encourages even more others to do the same.

In reality, then, it was NOT a ‘Million Dollar Day’ - it was more likely a BILLION DOLLAR DAY.

Thank you for doing what you did - and helping change many lives for the better, John.

    In deep and sincere appreciation.

    Dr.Mani

  41. Alex Dropshipping Says:

All big business people always talk about “Mindset” and that is definitely a very important part of our success.

Most of the time, what we have inside our minds it is what dictates our future.

It is very inspiring to read success stories like these.

    Cheers!

    Alex.

  42. Kent Says:

    Thanks John!

“The real secret is not in the list, but in other peoples’ list” - I like it!

This is the real reason why I like to follow your advise. No secret to hide behind.

  43. Roman Says:

John is different, from many around here.

Not what you did, which is crazy…

but how you do things, how you share them, it is unique.

Thank you is a small thing to say, but you deserve it.

    John,

A great perspective and informative post. One truly does not know what one is capable of until one undertakes a project.

I look forward to the day I can write a similar post and hopefully inspire someone like you have me.

  49. Fiona Boyd Says:

That’s an amazing achievement John. I just wonder if it’s possible to follow this sequence without being overly shouty and loud. I personally really hate those that shout the loudest, but do love being seduced into something new, an adventure. So many new launches at the present time appear overly ’shouty’ to me - what do you think? And thanks for sharing your sequence, that is most generous of you. Kind regards, Fiona

  50. Christo Strom Says:

    Greetings Mr. Reese,

Thank you for your post with relation to your Million Dollar Day. Also,
congratulations on all your success! I would like to invite you to be a judge
of an air brush contest I am putting on in the Twin Cities. As I know you are
busy with your business, I will be putting the finalists on DVD and bringing my
“show” down to Omaha Nebraska. On July 9th 2010, the “show” will go on!
Right now I am in the planning stage getting twelve air brush artists together
as I have big plans for a art-movie-music studio that will be built to accompany
the contest. Again thanks for your post John and take care.

  51. David Frey Says:

    John,

I remember communicating with you before your launch saying something like, “It would be cool if you did a million bucks on this launch” and you said something like, “I’m going to do a million on this launch!”

You know, there’s sometimes a day or an event that changes a piece of the world. Your Million Dollar Day was one of those events.

    Congratulations John.

    Thanks for being YOU.

    David

  52. Travis Campbell Says:

    John-

In keeping with Dr. Mani’s idea, more than the value of that launch, or lifetime value of that product, was the inspiration it provided to many who were a part of hundreds and hundreds of IM launches in the 5 years since.

…and the learning never ends. Thanks for keeping it real John.

    Travis

  53. Peter Palatnik Says:

    John,

I wasn’t plugged to the net the same way most of you guys were back in 2004, but I know one thing: your $1,000,000 Launch made a lot of BELIEVERS.

But the true value of that day can’t really be measured in terms of money, and you know that. How many people have been influenced in some way for the past 5 years, probably we will never know, but I can tell you, as an analogy, that what you did had a similar effect of what Michael Jordan did to Basketball.

He made the impossible, possible. Some call it EVOLUTION.

And yet, when I think about the possibilities….man we haven’t even started to scratch the surface yet.

We’re talking about what the the press, telephone, radio, and the TV did to the world during the past 500 years are now all mixed in this “machine” known as the web.

We haven’t seen anything yet and there’s still a long road ahead of us, but as long as people like you and other visionary folks keep leading the way, I’m pretty sure that the 21st Century has plenty of room for anyone who wants to jump on board.

Thanks for believing John and Congratulations on your 5th Anniversary.

    You are the BEST :-)

    Be extra-ordinary,
    @PeterPalatnik

P.S.1 A guy named “Kevin” believes it’s shameful the way other marketers are using the net…it’s a shame he can’t see how others are using it to change the world, including Mike Filsaime.

Yes, it’s true, Mike isn’t perfect, but neither anyone of us.

We still have a lot to learn, but If guys like Perry Belcher or Ross Goldberg have transformed their life’s for the better through the Net, hopefully one day this “Kevin” will learn to have the balls to link his name.

P.S.2 STRATEGIC COLLABORATION and ANTICIPATION are indeed MIGHTY forces John…but then again, we haven’t seen anything yet. A revolution is coming ;-)

  54. Nestor Says:

Congrats and happy anniversary, hope your next launch will be awsome.
I don’t know the traffic tactics you own, so I look forward getting to know the great tactics you are going to release.

    Take care!

  55. Gerard Lennon Says:

    Hey John,
Great post and congratulations on your 5 year anniversary. I’m glad you mentioned having ‘that conversation in your head’. And I think you’re right- no matter how much hard work and time and money you put into a business or goal, if you don’t have that fundamental belief that it can be done then you’re just wasting your time. Keep up the great work!
    Gerard

  56. Michael Sim Says:

    Hi John,

Great blog. I truly agree with you that Mental barrier can be the cause of success or failure. Just last year I ran my 1st Marathon. Before that day, I never thought that I could do it. But after I crossed the finish line I was estatic! Yes it was tough along the way but I kept telling myself to push on.
So I hope to use this Mental strength to help me in my Internet Marketing and push myself to greatness.

    Once again, great job!

Also I’ll have to start building up anticipation on my upcoming release of my new project. Maybe I’ll go with the blog idea.

    Thanks,

    Hey there John,

Ahhh! History (in this case Your-story) has a funny effect on our feeling doesn’t it?
Heck, those NLP Psycho-geniuses can access your history and create ‘anchor’ for certain responses for ‘future pacing’ (mind me for the jargon - can’t help myself showing off).

I wish I have experience like yours (or anything close to it) but for now I can only imagine…

And this bald Doctor by the name of Wayne Dyer, wrote something that I read time and again: “If you believe it, you can see it!”

    I believe…

PS. I find that John Mizel ‘invitation’ for you to surf in Maui, and the image it conjures is the easiest to ‘believe’ and see ;-) (no pun intended).

  69. Michael Podgoetsky Says:

John I started to hear about you about 8 months ago and all good things. You are a knowledgeable person to listen to.

    I will.
    Kind regards

  70. Jeff Czyzewski Says:

    John,

Great post. I wasn’t involved in online marketing then, as I am now, but it’s still one of those events that every marketer aspires to reach.

I absolutely agree with needing to have the right mindset and setting expectations. So many new to this business think that you achieved that million dollar day overnight,

When they don’t see those same results in a month they give up….truly unfortunate.

    Thanks for setting the bar..

    Jeff

  71. Janice Willms Says:

Can you shut the fuck up with your million dollar bullshit already?

    You’ve accomplished nothing since then.

  72. Rod Francis Says:

    Hey John

Many thanks - sharing your thoughts will certainly impact many and fall on deaf ears with others - MINDSET so powerful yet so destructive.

Forming long lasting relationships of common interest is certainly Internet Marketing GOLD - you and others are living proof of this.

There is so much that can be achieved together without the need to burn bridges that we have a profound energy to change the perception of the world in the process.

    You take care SIR and all the best you certainly deserve all that comes your way as nothing happens WITHOUT a reason :-}} :-}} :-}}

    Cheers

  80. Alex Gilberg Says:

Hey John congrats on this awesome milestone! I know you talk about it like it’s no big deal anymore, but it’s still amazing to me! I mean, $1 million dollars in 1 day, wow!

I was watching your interview with Frank and Tony and noticed that your goal was a Porsche 911 Turbo. Its funny you say that because that’s the no.1 goal that’s been driving me the past few years as well.

I’ve wanted a 911 Turbo since I was 16, when I was 18 I made a firm decision that I will have it before I turn 21. Right now i’m 19 turning 20 in a month so I still have 1 year to go and i’m on track to achieving it. I’ll keep you updated mate

    Hey John,

Great job. I think one of the things I like about you best is that you aren’t “salesy” at all. You’re alot like me in that you simply educate and explain a concept in detail without having to jump up and down and scream like a tv evangelist.

And it further reminds me of the 3 key ways to grow your business:

increase the purchase price, increase the number of transactions, and increase the frequency of transactions.

    Easy right? :)

  92. Gauher Says:

It is easy to understand why you did one million dollars that day. You created a high value course that offered tremondous value. You actually sent out a physical copy of the course to potential JV partners and asked them to judge the course themselves before they decided to promote.

I still see people who haven’t learned from you when doing a product launch. Show your potential partners your course and let them be the judge before they give you permission to leverage off their list.

    Keep up the great posts.

Thanks for the very insightful post John. I really enjoyed the video interview you did with Tony Robbins regarding the million dollar day, it fully supports the concept that the only limitations we face are those we set in our own mind. Having that inner self-belief and commitment to keep pushing forward despite what our outer circumstances show us is key, believing we have it before it we actually have it.

  117. Kerrin Says:

    Dear John

I first saw your interview with Anthony Robbins about 2months ago online. The reason for my mail is you really motivated me to write to you and making the money you did in such a short space time was just amazing. I have been inspired by you not because of the money you made as you say it is also about the passion you have for what you do and working for that $1 and building up. I have a company called Talent Finders which is an online database for actors, models, speakers, bands etc. I really wanted to talk to you because the concept is great and has massive potential to grow my challenge has been esspecially here in South Africa and I have noticed and speaking to other individuals they are all facing the sames or similar challenges in terms of marketing our businesses. Bulk mailing is no longer as effective because we are all just bombarded with to many mails daily. Face book is okay in terms of getting the word out but it does not seem to convert in to real business transactions. When I started Talent Finders I realised it not just about marketing and selling my concept but also trying to educate individuals on the power of the use of the internet of which I still don’t think even I do to it’s real potential. I know my business can grow and has far more potential but I really want to be and have the success I know you are but in my own right I really think you are amazing in all your achievements and am asking you to help or contact me I am passionate driven and all those things but my battle is evident please if there is anyway you contact me I would appreciate it. contact +27 82 823 6861
