It’s Not About The ‘Secrets’ It’s About The Strategy | |||

* Sorry for the ‘blog vacation.’ I was traveling throughout Europe for two months on a much needed vacation. Regular posting will resume soon. I always laugh when I see people on business and marketing forums say this… “There are no secrets!” “You can learn everything for free online!” Etc. etc. When it comes to consulting and/or selling one’s expertise there will always be those that believe every piece of knowledge or discovery is already known by others. And these same people believe that information can easily be found on the Internet — so they believe they have no need to invest in consulting, buying a training course, etc. There is A LOT of extremely valuable business and marketing information that is not ‘publicly’ known. New discoveries are made everyday. Anyone that ever thinks they know it all in ANY market or area of expertise is an IDIOT. We should ALL constantly strive to learn more about our respective interests and industries. As far as “secrets” are concerned, this is a different story. The word “secrets” has, and probably always will be, one of the most powerful words in the history of copywriting. And this is the reason that this word is often used to describe valuable information and is a popular choice to use in book and course titles. i.e. my own Traffic Secrets 2.0 product. But even if every piece of knowledge and information was being freely discussed on the Web, from articles to discussion forums to blogs, etc., the information itself is essentially WORTHLESS. When it comes to Internet Marketing information it doesn’t matter if you know a few tricks to get top rankings in Google, or ways to pre-sell a prospect to increase the conversion of an affiliate offer, or a few words you can add to an order form to decrease shopping cart abandonment… The only thing that matters is YOUR STRATEGY. How you use the tactics and techniques. When? How often? What tactics can you combine? In what order do you execute them? And so on. I’ve known many Internet marketers that actually know more information and knowledge about IM than some ‘gurus’ do. Yet these marketers FAIL. They don’t have much success building their online business. They struggle and struggle often. They end up feeling bitter and thinking that the techniques don’t actually work — or at least as well as some say they do. The problem is simple… they know or have all the puzzle pieces, they just don’t know what to do with them. In order to succeed and see positive progress in ANYTHING you do for your business you must use a solid strategy. A plan of action that fully defines what needs to be done and when. And then a plan for how to use the results (good or bad) to progress from that point forward. So my advice is to pay less attention to learning so much about individual tactics and techniques and focus on a bigger picture of how to use MANY things together in a solid plan. Even if you knew everything, or could find it somewhere, you’ll still need to know ‘what’ to do with it. Don’t ever forget that. If you’re one of my Traffic Secrets 2.0 customers then you know exactly what I’m talking about as the TS2 course is all about carrying out a specific strategy to produce a ton of targeted traffic and not just a bunch of individual ’secret’ tricks. |

Great post. As I near the end of school (2 days to go!) I’ve been carefully planning the exact steps I need to take to reach my goal. Good think is I love planning so devising strategies is quite enjoyable.

What you say is so true! And not only for online businesses, but any business. I meet so many small business owners while out networking (here in the UK) and they all rush to the free seminars looking for the ‘magic pill’ that is going to transform their profits. If only they realised that they already have enough information but need a strategy, as you say John, and also to just take action! How much more successful they would be …..
September 22nd, 2008 at 3:33 am
Once again you have outdone yourself. To quote Mr McCain, we are a nation of whinner. I was raised in Africa and the entitlement that I see everyday is amazing. i ask myself as i deal with people, how come you are the special, the one that is going to prove everyone wrong? How come you are the one that feels you don’t have to pay the price like many before you have to create success? You know what you need to do…it’s like the bible says ever searching but never coming to a knowledge of the truth. It is true John so true what you say. Incidentally today someone called me an IDIOT, you know why because I bothered to listen to a speech given by one Gov. Palin. Well after 10 minutes into it the stroke of genius idea was presented to me so i shot a video on it. I mean it was just brilliant if you ask me. I got the notion from Mike Dillards blog about CNN’s subliminal messages…that post stuck with me and well I was able to reap the reward.
Yes John, I thank you for sharing what you know. I thank you for your humility in knowing that will all yo know, you don’t know it all. I am glad to learn something everyday. I learned to use twitter not a month ago and the results have be astounding and I got that tip from Mike Dillard…keep it coming!

Great article, John.
I couldn’t agree more.
I see three types of people:
Firstly - People want to believe that there’s “more to it” - that they haven’t “got it” yet, they “don’t know it well enough” yet, and that’s the reason they haven’t “made it” yet.
This is why “secrets” sell - and it’s why people keep looking for them.
But on the flip-side of the coin, (and I’m sure you’ve seen it yourself, John) there are people who endlessly plan their strategy without taking action.
This second group of people keep on trying to “get it right” before they make a start.
I like the analogy of sailing a ship to a city that lies across the ocean.
You’re not going to do everything perfectly and keep your ship heading dead on target 100% of the time - but if you’re pointed in the right direction, and if you can make course corrections along the way, you can still make it.
So long as you know broadly where you’re going, how you’re going to get there, and think about what might happen along the way - you have strategy covered.
But planning forever, and waiting until your sailing ship becomes a speedboat with GPS before you make a start is just as bad as trying to uncover all of the “secrets” before you begin.
The third group of people are people who know the “secrets”, and do put the strategy together, but keep failing because they don’t get the strategy together in the *right way*.
The issue here usually comes down to experience.
There’s a book titled “You can’t teach a kid to rid a bike at a seminar” - and the same is true with “sailing” the internet marketing seas.
While you can “teach” someone how to put together a good strategy at a seminar, in a book, or in a course - in the end, they need to do it themselves and learn through mistakes.
They need to work out for themselves how to weather the storms, how to ration their supplies, when to tack, how to read the waves and the wind - and all of the things “salty sea dogs” (like yourself) do naturally and in a way that makes it look easy.
Think back to the guy who bought that domain name of yours, then on-sold it for zillions overnight!
Think of all the other mistakes you have made, and learned from.
This is the difference between you and most of the people who “know it all” but don’t “get it yet”.
In the end, we need to get out there, screw up, get caught in hurricanes, lose our treasures to pirates, sink a few boats, learn from our mistakes, and get back out there on the high seas.
Let’s face it - you can’t become a “salty sea-dog” of internet marketing if you’re still on the shore - and practically no-one survives their maiden voyage.
(hrmm - Maybe I’ve just over-used that sailing a ship metaphor
)

Great post John. I agree with everything you said. And like Louise BJ said, it applies to all businesses. I’m a happy TS 2 owner.
September 22nd, 2008 at 4:19 am
Great post John!
Yes, you’re absolutely correct! I’ve been working in search marketing for a while now - but I still bought your TS2.0 course because I want to know how online marketing works together with the various different parts, not just SEO/PPC.
It’s fine knowing a certain subject in-depth if you’re a specialised employee - but when you want to create your own business you need to know a bit about everything - and how everything works together…
Thanks again, and thank you for creating Traffic Secrets 2.0! I do not regret it buying it at all and will soon be ‘listening’ to it again on my journeys
September 22nd, 2008 at 5:20 am
Spot on dude… you can have all the knowledge in the world, but if you don’t know how to apply it…
BTW, your interview with Shel was hilarious
September 22nd, 2008 at 5:37 am
I personally would never set out in a new activity, whether it is a small niche site or a production facility for a thingamajig, without the expertise of a consultant. You may have more knowledge and experience than the consultant in question, but you still get another perspective, which is very valuable.
September 22nd, 2008 at 6:01 am
Granted, the information might be available as discrete pieces of info spread all over the internet - on blogs, forums, websites, the value is in the aggregation and intelligent presentation of the info in a unified, usable mass.
The point you’ve alluded to, the creation of a system, with step-by-step instructions is key if someone’s (a lead/prospect) totally new to a topic/niche.
If anything, a product is the roadmap to “learn how to learn”. It equips you with the foundation and vocabulary and gets you off to a running start.
You still need the continual learning piece and the networking/masterminds to bring you to the next level.
“Magic bullet” thinking is just as effective and detrimental to your success as putting a gun to your own temples…
September 22nd, 2008 at 6:04 am
yes i use to go searching high and low for the secrets, but I found that it has nothing to do with it.
There are the two ingredients I use now, and its like someone sprinkled fairy dust everywhere, cause it works like a champ.
1) follow wholesome advice that has made money for others.
2) test, test, test, oh and test again. Doing something just a little bit different has sometimes made me 3x the amount of money. This is a true.
So its not just about learning the secrets it about applying them in a way that works for you.
Cheers for a good post john.
John.
September 22nd, 2008 at 6:10 am
Great post, and a nice answer to some of those “there are no secrets” posts you mention that I’ve also seen a lot of lately.
I’m a very happy Traffic Secrets 2 customer - not because every tactic or strategy it contained was new to me, but because it showed me how to use what I already knew (and what I learned in TS2) to create a fully-developed and complete plan of attack that is putting my previous efforts to shame.
September 22nd, 2008 at 6:23 am
ooooooh my gosh John - you nailed it with this post!
I’m glad you laugh anytime you hear someone say how you can get “everything for free” online because I raise an eyebrow & roll my eyes, shaking my head thinking how much that person lacks “wisdom”.
And that’s what you just said in a nutshell in your title.
(u actually could’ve saved a few hundred words in the post
b/c u had me at the title)
PS: you sooooooo wanted to laugh when u were being interviewed by Shel!
I’m “watching” it now at the Houston airport in Presidential Lounge, but no sound so i’lll have to re-watch and Listen to it when i get back to Hawaii tomorrow… er… today

Great post John! Speaking as someone new to IM, the comments from Brent are also worthy of note.
Without a strategy you’re indeed sleepin’ with the fishes but my biggest difficulty lay in not DOING stuff - I always wanted (want!) to LEARN everything before taking the plunge.
I could probably tell you a few hundred things about internet marketing, but I’ve never actually done any of it, anyways..
Last week I finally decided that enough is enough, and started working back through TS2 in earnest, forcing myself to apply what I’m learning before moving on.
It’s very refreshing.
Oh, and thanks for the TS2 MP3s

September 22nd, 2008 at 8:51 am
“I’ve known many Internet marketers that actually know more information and knowledge about IM than some ‘gurus’ do. Yet these marketers FAIL. They don’t have much success building their online business. They struggle and struggle often. They end up feeling bitter and thinking that the techniques don’t actually work — or at least as well as some say they do.”
I can fully relate to this paragraph. I’m one of those people, except for the feeling bitter and blaming the technique.
I know full well that my lack of success is not the information and techniques.
Brent Hodgson gives a great example above.
In Brent’s example, I would have to say I’m more like the third group. I know the secrets, I know the information, I know the techniques, I spend time creating plans and strategies to implement what I’m learning…
YET… I still fail at majority of my marketing efforts. I keep feeling like I’m missing something. A piece of the puzzle that I must have overlooked. Something I’m not doing right.
But that’s natural…
Logically I know that the reason why I don’t succeed is because either my plan/strategy is not sound or my implementation of the strategy is wrong.
Emotionally… however… my mind keeps saying the reason for my failure is out there.. external forces, circumstances, fate, situations, wife, kids, etc, etc, etc. My mind keeps trying to tell me that something, other than myself, is the reason why I’m not successful.
One of the hardest things you can do is be 100% honest with yourself and come to the realization that your success lies squarely on your own shoulders.
Having access to all the information in the world, all the techniques under the sun, and the best copy writing material available will do nothing for you if you don’t learn how to filter out the crap, retain what’s useful, and develop an action/strategy to successfully implement this into your business… If you can’t do this, you’re going no where.
So.. rather than looking for the “secrets”… put your energy into creating a strategy that works for you. Determine your destination, create a plan to get there, and then implement your plan to the best of your ability.
And don’t be affraid to change your plan..
Shannon
p.s. Thanks again John for helping with Kiva.
September 22nd, 2008 at 9:09 am
I 100% agree John. The true value in ’secrets’ is the time savings and way a course is organized into a system so you don’t have to spend mountains of time searching out the free resources on the internet. Putting a bunch of piecemeal sources together into a coherent system takes time and testing.
Most of the quality courses you buy out there this is already done for you. Just plug and play.
It’s less about “can I get this for free” and more about “Does the ROI I get on this meet my standards?”
Also, many marketers are doing tests you may never have thought of which can add tremendous value to your business and bottom line.

Hey John,
Welcome Back from your blog vacation. Looking forward to more frequent posts.
And btw, I’m in the Orlando area this week so let me know what night I can buy you a beer for putting out such a great product (TS2) at an amazing price. Although I think we’d pass out before I bought you enough beer to equal what TS2 should have sold for.

I agree John that you have to have a strategy. But for some people having the strategy in place isn’t enough. They study and learn everything they can about internet marketing, spend hundreds, thousands or tens of thousands of dollars, and they plan the strategy.
But if they never put the plan or strategy into place and take the necessary action then they get nowhere.
I think one of the key points that you said was
“And then a plan for how to use the results (good or bad) to progress from that point forward.”
That is probably the other big key or missing point. Once people have the strategy they often don’t have a plan or process to take the results or data and progress with their plans. And make changes and adjustments to their strategy as they get new data in. A large majority of the people that I speak with just learn the few strategies from the gurus and follow it. But I think one of the things that you teach about is the importance of collecting your own data and then using that data to make adjustments in your strategy and plan.
To summarize what I got from the post:
1. have a strategy (or plan)
2. taking action
3. getting feedback
4. adjusting
5. taking more action (repeat steps 2-4) until 1 is completed or decision is made to create new strategy.

Thanks John,
It seems extremely hard allot of the time getting people to understand that planning and preparing take way longer than the execution. For a large part that is why we have spam to the extent that we do.
Free is cool, you can get started with free stuff with the right planning and allot of work. Some people need that to get started, I have helped a bunch of people achieve some success that way. Heck I got banned from the Warrior Forum for helping people that had no money. LOL
I totally agree Your strategy is most important, your execution is just to watch it work.
just one of my lines.
Spam is an act of desperation, from the uneducated.

John Reese, you are right. It is possible to have very little knowledge about some niche and make millions with a proper plan and EXECUTION.
You said people with strategy win over people with just information. But I know many people who had a good strategy but did not succeed because they failed to execute it.
IT IS NOT ABOUT THE STRATEGY…
IT IS ABOUT STRATEGY FORMATION AND EXECUTION…
I would love to have a reply to this comment John…
September 23rd, 2008 at 6:23 pm
Oh Yes, John. The amazing thing is that you hear all sorts of excuses from the “I don’t Want To Pay For Information” crowd.
If they cannot respect your business, they are the very same ones that will never take the responsibility for their own business at all. People repeat their habbits in anything they do in life…
But on a gentler note…I don’t mean all people who make such comments feel that way. Sometimes it is anger for some reason, jealousy or simply frustration at themselves.
Often a lack certain skill sets simply stalls the progress of their endeavours (like me) but it just makes me want to learn more - but most importantly apply what I learn as I go. Attending the many classes and groups, I find there are people that simply gripe about their inability to take action and wonder why they are getting nowhere? And yet there are others that find their aha’s like I have with TS 2 and start to get things moving in a big way.
The main difference I find between the “success” and “failures” is the actual implementation as taught. Too many people think they are implementing the information the right way, but are actually skimping on many of the steps. As someone once said on a DVD “Shame On You!” lol.
Thanks John, Traffic Secrets 2.0 is really what you promised it would be and then some (the resources too).
September 23rd, 2008 at 7:24 pm
Hello John, Very interesting you should mention all these facts about that gimme freebie crowd. As far as I know, they won’t get off their chairs and move to get where they should even if it hurts where they sit.
What you sau about many IMers knowing far more than the “gurus” reminds me of the entrepreneurs who simply go ahead and do what it takes to make the ideas work in markets; while the knowledgeable professor is more apt to just teach - for free if possible. Each is doing what he or she does better.
But also as already discussed by so many great commentors here, there are those in the process of being somewhere in between the entrepreneur and the professor.
And yes, I know, there are the most frustrating of people who want everything for free - it simply says they won’t pay for anything and likewise won’t be paid anything.
One more thing about entrepreneurs - they are really good at the organisation of resources which most people are not and simply have no clue. That’s what their true genius is all about - hence the term “GURU”.

[…] read John Reese Blog Post “It’s Not About The ‘Secrets’ It’s About The Strategy” today, and I must agree with him! Just like many marketers, I have learn many courses online, […]
September 24th, 2008 at 11:38 am
I agree that you should look at the bigger picture instead of being focused on individual puzzle pieces. If your goal is reaching a certain level of revenue, collecting as many puzzle pieces (streams of revenue) as possible would be a solution. Even to the point of having some extra pieces to build a picture or making sure your picture has a “safe border/frame”.
September 25th, 2008 at 9:50 am
I think the lesson really here is- “You have to actually APPLY what you learn and not simply learn it and do nothing with it”
Napoleon Hill often said the world’s wealthiest men knew very little but they became wealthy by APPLYING information not simply by knowing it.
September 25th, 2008 at 6:25 pm
Hi John,
Thanks for another great post.
I remember Gary Halbert talking about people whining about having to pay for information and it’s so true.
It would have taken me years to learn what you taught in TS 2.0. Now all I have to do is apply the new techniques you’ve taught. So essentially a small investment of $400.00 can save years of our most precious resource.
That is one of the best investments that can possibly be made.
Thanks again!

Hi John,
Good post. There is absolutely a learning curve in internet marketing, in any business. The challenge for most people is of how their mindset is about their business. Just like Karen Kramer is saying, learn from the mistakes and continue. There are no failures, only results…
Thx

Very good article. I will buy TS2 as soon as possible.

This article basically made me go to the website and for the first time in my life buy the training, as there might be information that doesn’t flow freely, so I say, I’m a 18 year old webmaster from Romania, I can affort investing some money in training from time to time.
I see a whooping 400$ + 80$ shipping, ouch!?
I’m not going to say expensive as the information inside might worth every penny, it’s just not for me whatsoever.
Inspirational post though.

Good to see you back from vacation anyway I agree with you it’s about how to take the strategy and apply it to your sitaution.
September 30th, 2008 at 11:17 pm
Hey John,
Hope you had a great break and well deserved. Love the points you raised in this blog. Now have to agree and disagree, I am sure if someone dedicated a lot of time that they could crack the secrets (reverse engineer success) open with nothing other then free information available.
But heck it would probably take someone 20 X the amount of time to get where they want to go.
So hey for a fair exchange for $ and killer information far outweighs the other alternative!
Good to see you will be back blogging
Rich

Don’t you just have to think and use what you have? Cause when you have a strategy one day that strategy might not work the next day because the Internet changes so fast.
I don’t know. I’m new to all this. I’ll try making up a strategy that tells me what to be done how and when. It probably won’t work out with my because I am pretty lazy.
Thank you John Reese.

I agree with the strategy part. Even the most skilled “traffic getters” fail without a proper strategy to use that traffic to generate money.
I’ve seen where people apply the proper strategy in the beginning and their results skyrocket…even when they are learning the nuts and bolts of traffic generation.
Kudos to you….excellent course and worth far more then you charged.
October 2nd, 2008 at 6:36 pm
You made an excellent point, John. It’s the implementations and strategies that put our leanings to work. We can spend tons of time learning but get no where.
I am a baby to the online marketing world and am overwhelmed with the amount of information I get everyday. One can really get sucked into the whirlpool of information and leaves no time to build one’s business, very counter-productive, indeed.
It’s been weeks after studying your TS2, I’m still having “indigestion”. Loved your work, though. Thank you.
October 5th, 2008 at 8:26 am
Hi, John.
It’s easy for me to agree with every word in this post simply because I was one of those that “had all the puzzles” but still didn’t know how to make it work.
Your TS2 made me realize that there was one important “puzzle” missing from my “big picture”. That final piece was ACTION.
Although I had all the puzzles - I was STILL looking for MORE of them instead of simply TAKING ACTION on the knowledge I already had.
After going through TS2 - and after watching the final disk, “Core Influence” I suddenly (yes, SUDDENLY) realized this. Strange, but true. I mean … what in the world have I been thinking for the past years?
The best thing I got out of TS2 was … no, not the knowledge (although that was brilliant), but CONFIDENCE - Confidence in myself, my knowledge and my abilities.
I stopped immediately searching for more “puzzles” and started, also immediately, putting into action what I knew.
And … believe it or not … since watching TS2 and putting everything I learned there plus everything I already knew about the online business into ACTION by forming and carrying out my own, home-made STRATEGY, I have made more than $100.000 online - in just about 40 days!
So … I can’t thank you (and Frank Kern) enough.
And … I think there are a lot of people like me out there … people that already have all the knowledge and “secrets” but are just missing this final piece: ACTION.

Dear John,
I completely agree with on the “secrets” what people are searching for, or
rather the next best secret. they don’t have a strategy in place and thats the reason
they fail. fundamentals if known and implemented , success is for sure.
thats for making it so simple for people to understand.

Hi there
This is so true. For the longest time I thought I can get all the info I need for free on the web. It was only recently that I realized that in order to really make some progress with my learning, I need to get off the web, and work offline to teach myself the strategies needed to succeed. What a waste of valuable time it was, trying to gain all the knowledge and insight “for free”.
An investment in a “secrets” product can be recovered, or even deducted from tax, but time can never be recovered.
Regards
Louise
October 28th, 2008 at 6:55 pm
Well…a strategy is likened unto a secret whenever it seems to baffle your peers as to how you pulled it off…
Of course, there are no such things as secrets…just knowledge waiting to be discovered
October 31st, 2008 at 1:38 am
Very good Point John
The thing is that many people think they can find out all the real secrets online for free.
What I think is there great info on the net but all the best stuff I have learn was from paid courses could be that people when the see the price tag is zero.
They dont think its worth knowing. I would say that not true but most people that pay for something will read or watch the info because they have invested interested in it.

Hi John,
I have just started down this long road of which I arrogantly thought was easy, boy was I in for a rude awakening.
As your article states, you can never know it all and that is what I love, every day, I learn something new. My brain was in learning limbo for quite some time but it is great to get the cob webs out.
As to secrets, I have no doubt there are many, as as you said once the cat is out of the bag it is game over.
John I love your casual writing style, a perfect blog where I feel like we are discussing it over a cup of Jar.
