The Wonderful World Of Data Center Outages

Shocked to see this blog actually load? YOU SHOULD BE! ;)

It has been offline for nearly 5 DAYS.

Our primary server host experienced a major fire that knocked out connectivity to *9,000* servers. I would bet that over 250,000 web sites were affected by this outage.

Not all the servers are back online, but they should be any minute. I’m glad our blog is back up.

Does this mean you’ll be getting a new host?

That’s brutal - server headaches are never fun. It would be pretty hard to game plan for something like that.

My server admin hooked me up with Amazon EC2 for server redundancy. It really helped when we had a denial of service attack last year. We were able to flip a switch and were up and running within a few hours.

Let me know if you want his contact info. He’s really savvy with the Amazon cloud and his rates are very reasonable.

    All the best,

    Jeremy

    Looking forward to TS 2…

That was quite the experience for many! My server wasn’t affected but it made me re-check my backup solutions. I’ve been having “off server” backups, but not “off site”. Figured out how to backup to Amazon S3 and wrote a post about it. If it were a mission critical site, 5 days would be too long =P

Whilst it was not a good position for ThePlanet to be in, you have to give them some credit…

They did have a fire and explosion which was powerful enough to knock walls down in their server room, yet none of the servers were damaged. In fact the power that did go off came back on again (on generator) and there would have been no interruption!

The reason it then went down is because the fire authority TOLD them to turn the power off (so this is a bit of a flaw in the plan). It has to be said though, if you follow their forum they were posting every 15mins, on the hour and then every two hours, updates and information right the way through the night…

OK, it shouldn’t have happened, but it was a good lesson in how to deal with what did. Just my thoughts.

    That’s good to hear!

It’s never fun when something is COMPLETELY out of your control, and all you can do is wait.

I know where you are coming from man.

    Talk with you soon,

    Ryan

Man, I’m pissed when my site goes down for 5 minutes. I’m not sure what I would do if I had to suffer through 5 days.

I do have to agree that they handled the situation pretty well in regards to keeping in contact with the public but I know of A LOT of people who aren’t happy about the behind-the-scenes issues.

It also (hopefully) really urges people to do regular backups and not to have all their eggs in one basket, i.e. don’t host all your sites on one server.

Hey, you host with Hostgator dedicated? We had the same problem, but we had a back up ready, so we were no longer than a few minutes off line. I heard that the fire dept made them to switch of all servers to be sure and safe. Glad to see your blog is back up again! ;)

The internet marketing world is very weird. When i first came into it i never knew what to really do. I’m starting to wonder if these people really are millionaires. It seems their outlandish claims of making money is something that is just one secret that nobody knows. Should i even bother trying to make money online? What is the real key to making sales???

  16. Laarni Lorenzo Says:

It is unfortunate for a site to go down for 5 minutes, let alone for 5 days! I hope it works out ok, usually you alway have to just find a solution to the problem.

  18. Nicholas Finnegan Says:

We don’t fall in love when we are in the company of someone, we fall in love when we are off by ourselves thinking about them afterwards.

Its quite clear that we enjoy being in each others company and like having fun together. And its also plainly obvious that a butt naked angel called cupid doesn’t shoot an arrow into our butt.

But it is when you are on your own and you find yourself thinking about someone in such a unique way, that allows you to list all the qualities about them you really like, and imagine yourself with them connecting together with the flow of your personalities, is when a feeling of love begins to take place deep inside of you. And although you may try push these feelings down or talk yourself out of them, you only find it comes back 10 times more powerful than ever before, allowing you to fall into deeper emotional states of falling for this person during moments of the day. With me, according to my experiences with people, theres always potential connections that can be built between us as human beings.

When you recall a time in your past when you fell in love, where you then able to stay cool, in control of yourself and the relationship? Or where you calling that person everyday, always wanting to see them, thinking about them and eager to experience a growing connection with them?

Heres the point: We do not fall in love by “tripping” over or falling into a “hole!” Love is a process we do to ourselves! And there are always new ways to discover how love can manifest between us - to the point where you act upon it right now!

    All the best,

    Nicholas Finnegan
