Shocking Changes At BlogRush!

UPDATE: Many people are asking if they can repost this letter on their blogs. The answer is “YES” that’s fine but please make sure to leave the entire letter intact. Thank you.

This is a “letter” I just sent to all BlogRush members. It contains some very important BlogRush developments so I wanted to be sure and post it on the blog also.

Many ISPs have email delivery issues and not all emails go through so I wanted to make sure everyone will read it, if possible..

TO: All BlogRush Members
FROM: John Reese, Founder of BlogRush

ARE YOU READY? Because *everything* is about to change. Forget everything else up until now…

PREPARE FOR *BIG* CHANGES! (TWO MAJOR CHANGES ARE NOW LIVE.)

BlogRush CAN’T EXIST if we’re not sending you a lot of ongoing, targeted traffic. We fully recognize this and that’s why this is our ONLY FOCUS.

The BlogRush team has been hard at work making major improvements for you and we won’t rest until BlogRush is running 100% smoothly and sending you tons of targeted traffic! This is OUR MISSION. Please know that our entire team is working around-the-clock to make improvements and fix any problems AS FAST AS HUMANLY POSSIBLE.

(We sincerely appreciate your patience.)

We’ve encountered some problems since our historic launch just over a week ago, and we fully recognize that we’ve made some real ‘goofs’ with the system for our Public Beta release…

For example, our data center provider (one of the largest in the world) had a short, temporary outage (they had to replace a network switch) two days after our launch. We had no control over this outage but want to SINCERELY APOLOGIZE to those that saw this message on their blogs (where the widget should have been):

“We are currently experiencing some technical issues and the site will be back online shortly. Please come back in a few minutes.”

We were completely *EMBARRASSED* when we realized this happened. That simple message was part of our application code and was meant to appear only on *OUR* WEB SITE PAGES if we ever experienced an outage. This was accidentally ‘marked’ to be a global error message for ANY outage — including if our widget ever had a problem loading. This was a major GOOF and we’re willing to admit it. Our code was planned so that in the case of a problem with our widget, NOTHING WOULD LOAD in its place. So a visitor to your blog doesn’t see an error or anything wrong should the widget ever have any technical issues.

This was quickly corrected and is now working properly. Should the widget ever have any problem loading in the future, your blog will be served a transparent space (which will show whatever background your blog design has) and your blog readers won’t really notice anything.

Again, our sincere apologies for our major goof. It was quite embarrassing.

NOW ONTO SOME SERIOUS ISSUES…

We also realize that we completely underestimated the number of unethical people that would sign up and proceed to CHEAT and try to ‘game’ the BlogRush system. These cheaters ruined the click-rates of many of our members (and burned through a lot of their credits using automated ‘exploit’ methods) and hurt BlogRush’s ability to send maximum traffic to our honest members’ blogs.

BUT ALL OF THAT IS ABOUT TO BE ERASED… LIKE IT NEVER HAPPENED.

In the next several days to come, we’re going to be rolling out MAJOR changes to BlogRush. BIG changes. And these changes (again) have just ONE primary purpose — to drive more ongoing, targeted traffic to your blog.

We’ve listened to your valued feedback and constructive criticism and we have been working in TURBO MODE to make the changes you want ASAP…

—– HERE’S WHAT’S COMING IN THE NEXT 48 HOURS —–

100% MANUAL BLOG REVIEW.

Our team is going to be manually reviewing every single new blog that registers to participate in the BlogRush Network.

We’ll be applying some quality guidelines and criteria to our decision-making process. (We’ll be publishing these guidelines very soon.) If a blog does not meet our guidelines and criteria, THEY WILL BE REJECTED from the network and not allowed to join — i.e. they won’t be able to serve our widget, refer other users, or have their blog posts distributed across our network. They will have no access to any BlogRush services.

Our members, like YOU, made it LOUD AND CLEAR to us… BlogRush needs to only have members that have quality blog content — not blogs filled primarily with ads and other spammy looking JUNK.

The only accurate way we’re going to keep these junk blogs out of our network is to REVIEW EVERY SINGLE ONE BY HAND. And we’re willing to do it to protect the integrity of our network. I don’t care what it costs us to hire more people (if we need them) to review 100% of any blog trying to join our network. We will be reviewing ALL OF THEM from here on out.

* We realize that several non-English language blogs blatantly ignored our “ENGLISH BLOGS ONLY” warning on our Registration page. Rest assured, though, they’ll all be PURGED from the network when we do our QUALITY CONTROL AUDIT over the next several days (you’ll read about it in a moment).

As I’ve said several times before, BlogRush isn’t some passing “fad” or short-term service. We’re dedicated to building an incredibly valuable resources for bloggers FOR MANY YEARS TO COME.

We’ll also be doing a QUALITY CONTROL AUDIT of all of our existing member blogs. We’ll be reviewing every single blog that’s currently in our network (or that registers before the Manual Review Process becomes active.) And we’ll be completely *REMOVING* any blogs in our network that don’t meet our quality guidelines and criteria.

As you can probably tell by now, we’re not messing around. We have put a lot of hard work into the development of this service and we will continue to bust our butts to make it one of the best Internet services in the world. COUNT ON IT.

We’re also deploying several new Anti-Cheat measures to SHUTDOWN AND WIPEOUT the cheaters and unethical users that have abused our network. Sorry, crooks, but THE FREE RIDE IS OVER.

We’ll be dedicating an entire department to stay on top of any abusive behavior in our network. We believe that our new measures are going to instantly eliminate most, if not all, of our system abuse. It’s going to take us a few more days to roll-out all of these measures (and to complete our entire QUALITY CONTROL AUDIT) but rest assured, BlogRush is about to go through a major TRANSFORMATION.

And a quick word to any ‘cheats’ that might be reading this letter… it’s very possible that you may come up with something extremely creative that temporarily gets by us, but you should know something… IT’S NOT GOING TO BE WORTH YOUR TIME. And I’m not just talking about the tiny amount of traffic that you’ll receive before we shut you off.

You see, we have other plans in the works…

If you attempt to cheat or abuse our network in anyway, shape, or form, we will not hesitate to come after you. Our company is well funded and has plenty of resources. And we WILL use them to punish you to the fullest extent of the law (and civil court process). Oh, you think you can just hide behind some anonymous proxy IPs? Sorry, it’s not that easy. ANY reason you’d have to try and cheat the BlogRush network for traffic and any attempt you make to monetize that traffic will lead directly to your front door — whether it’s AdSense, any affiliate program in the world, any online pharmacy, porn site, casino… ANYTHING. We will follow the trail and it WILL eventually lead to you.

Our hard-working company provides the income for MANY families. As the CEO of our company, I take this very seriously. I HAVE TO. People that attempt to abuse or cheat BlogRush are affecting the livelihood of all my employees and their families. And I will do everything in my power to protect them — it’s MY DUTY.

So for all you cheaters that joined BlogRush and had your fun trying to siphon off some traffic, hopefully it was fun. And I’ll go ahead and make this statement right now… IF you were one of the people that has been cheating our network I’m going to give you ONE opportunity… quit now and we’ll pretend it never happened. I think that’s more than fair.

BUT… if you continue after this point, all bets are off. We WILL eventually discover what you’re doing, where you’re trying to send traffic, and we will prosecute you. I GUARANTEE IT. Sorry, but WE HAVE NO CHOICE NOW.

* If you’re one of our valued, HONEST users, I’m very sorry you even have to read stuff like that. I know it’s a waste of your time. Unfortunately, there are unethical people in this world that attempt to abuse and take advantage of others.

MOVING ON…

—- ALSO COMING SOON! —-

**** A LOT MORE CATEGORIES! ****

You asked for it, and you’re getting it!

We’re going to be greatly expanding our directory of categories to increase the relevancy of post links appearing in the widget on your blog — this will also increase click-rates (and traffic) for all members.

* Stay tuned over the next several days for more news about the addition of new categories.

AND…

**** IMPROVED REPORTING! ****

The current Dashboard stats are being under-reported for all users right now. This is the reason that users show discrepancies when looking at Google Analytics data (or other stats packages). We’re currently sending more traffic to our users than we’re reporting in the Dashboard because we are giving all users bonus credits everyday. We’ll soon be reporting all bonus credit activity so all the numbers will be accurate.

SPECIAL NOTE TO ALL LOW-TRAFFIC MEMBERS: In the near future we’ll be giving our low-traffic members (those that need more traffic the most) the BULK of our bonus credit allocations. You’ll get a ton more bonus credits than high-traffic members because you really need it. It’s only FAIR!

* Also we apologize to anyone that has seen a “negative” credit balance for their account. This is a minor bug that we’re taking care of. It doesn’t mean anything and you can just ignore it for now. We apologize for any confusion.

**** IMPROVED NETWORK DISTRIBUTION ****

A few of our users have noticed that they’re building up credits faster than the system is using them. This will eventually balance itself out as the network continues to “adjust” to the growth levels and traffic patterns of each category — because our network provides syndication distribution based on daily average “cycles” and then adjusts moving into the future; so it’s able to accurately predict how fast to use a certain user’s credits, etc. — as compared to just using them all “as fast as possible.”

—- AND HERE ARE *TWO* BRAND-NEW ADDITIONS THAT JUST WENT LIVE!!!! —-

**** BLOGRUSH “FLAVORS” ARE NOW ACTIVE!

You can go login to your account, click the “Settings” tab and then select “Flavors.”

You can choose from (13) different widget colors. You no longer have to only use our original “black” widget design that many users thought was ugly! (Hey, just don’t let our lead designer hear that… he thought his black design was “really cool.”)

Now you can select a color that more closely matches the look of your blog. Our users have been asking for this since we launched our Public Beta, and we’ve taken action to offer these new options.

* We have future plans for further widget customization but we’re working on one “stage” of improvement at a time! Please bear with us. We’re fully aware of the request for a more narrow widget as our current one doesn’t fit on some blogs. We’re trying to produce a solution and should have some news soon.

HERE’S THE BEST PART…

You don’t have to copy and paste new code to your blog. Just go to that “Flavors” section for your account, select the flavor you want, then hit the “APPLY FLAVOR” button. That’s it! Reload your blog in another browser window and take a look.

And if you want to see what a different flavor might look like, just pick another one, hit the “APPLY FLAVOR” button and reload your blog. PRESTO! :-)

AND LAST BUT CERTAINLY NOT LEAST…

***** BLOG POST CONTROLS *****

Under the “Settings” tab you’ll also find a new option called, “My Post Control.” Here’s what this awesome new feature does…

You can create POST FILTERS for your blog posts…

For example, you can add a keyword or phrase and create a new post filter. If you ever create a post on your blog (while you have that filter active — and you can add/delete them at anytime) that contains one of those keywords in the TITLE of your blog post, that post…

WILL *NOT* BE SHOWN ACROSS THE NETWORK. And you won’t use any of your syndication credits!

All bloggers post “off-topic” stuff from time to time, or short posts that don’t have a ton of great content. Well, now you can easily keep any of those types of posts from using your valuable syndication credits and from being shown across the network!

This is GREAT for you because now you can control exactly which posts of yours will be syndicated. This can help you maximize your CLICK-RATES and, ultimately, the traffic you receive from the BlogRush network. AND it can help retain NEW READERS for your blog (your ultimate goal that can grow your blog’s traffic on a day-to-day basis.)

Here’s Why…

By selecting which posts get syndicated (by simply adding filters right BEFORE you publish a post on your blog that you don’t want to be used; or having setup one well in advance) you can make sure that you’re only syndicating your BEST POSTS. The ones with top-quality content. Your posts that a new visitor to your blog will enjoy and be much more likely to make a “YES!” decision to become a regular reader for you!

AND OH YEAH, ONE MORE THING…

This is only the very beginning for BlogRush. We have so much great stuff in store for you! As I said at the beginning of this letter… we will continue to work VERY HARD to make improvements and add-ons with ONE PRIMARY FOCUS…

To drive more ongoing targeted traffic to your blog.

I want to personally THANK YOU on behalf of our entire company for your interest in BlogRush. We’ve received a lot of criticism from many bloggers on the Internet, and we’ll be the first to admit we’re not perfect and a lot of it was WELL-DESERVED.

But please know, we’re busy working around the clock FOR YOU. You have our word on it.

Now go login to your account and try out some of the new “Flavors” for your blog! And also start setting up some Post Control Filters so you can start maximizing your content syndication.

I’ll be in touch when I have more “news” to share. Thanks for reading this long letter. I had a lot to tell you about. :-)

Best Regards,

John Reese, Founder of BlogRush

    John,

Why be embarrassed by a tiny, temporary blip in a Beta program?

We all know you like to over-deliver, and you have. Don’t beat yourself up about it (or your team).

I hope I speak for many when I tell you about how pleased I am for those clicks that have come my way. If the cost had been a little lost AdSense, I know it was worth it. But AdSense is up, so I am winning well.

Clicking on referrers has shown me some interesting potential partners, as has clicking on interesting headlines when I’ve reviewed my site.

It’s a win-win-win so far for small fry like me. I hope you get as much out of it.

I like the service so far and appreciate your willingness to address the problems. BlogRush is going places.

I can’t help but point out that your e-mail alert is one of the most bizarre, manic things I’ve read in quite a while.

Relax, be concise, take a professional tone and lose the caps.

Other than that, keep up the good work.

  11. Meg H. Says:

On the language issue, why cut yourself out of potential users? Why not just make the various non-english languages into Blog Categories that people can choose when they sign up for their blog?

Let’s take a deep breath. I see a lot of capitalization here & that gives me an idea of how ramped up you are. I hope you have some calming influences on your team who can help you mediate your emotions a little so you don’t make a rash decision & cut out a lot of potential users.

It is exciting to see how much you care about your product, but I agree with Keith of the niche-inspector-review.com, this is a beta & we expect a few kinks & bugs.

We all excited about your product & we appreciate all your hard work.

  12. John Reese Says:

YES, this letter can be reposted as long as it is left intact.

Meg - we’re not reaching enough non-English language blogs (of the same language) for a sub-network to work yet. We’re buiding a “waiting list” for those that are interested in other languages. If we get enough interest, we’ll roll it out and test it.

Time for some sleep. Thanks for the feedback, everyone. :)

    John,

I’d first like to say that I think you are doing a great thing with Blog Rush, and I commend you for taking on and tackling the hard issues up front.

I do believe however that this email message could have been a little shorter and to the point.

More importantly, I think that only the users who were found to have done something wrong should have received the paragraph starting with “If you attempt to cheat or abuse our network in anyway, shape, or form, we will not hesitate to come after you….” It seems a little harsh and may turn off some readers when you come at them full force. I speak from a background in studying organizational management and from personal experience. Although the blogosphere tends to foster opinionated articles and personal feelings, I think a company should have a more formalized approach in dealing with issues like this. As an example, I don’t think AT&T would ever send out a message saying something like that to people who illegally downloaded music on using their dsl service. Just a friendly recommendation.

    Best and Good Luck,
    Rashid

Awesome post John. You seem to have responded to all the complaints and negative criticism the best that you possibly could. I’m very excited about the bonus credits and seeing which direction you take BlogRush. One recommendation…maybe allowing users to select multiple categories for their blog (I understand the problem is that people might select everyone), but I”m thinking giving people two maximum because a lot of people, like myself, fall into that group. Thanks.

  24. Chuck Anthony Says:

    BLOCKING JUNK BLOGS

There must be a better way. There is no way that I am going to manually edit junk blogs into my admin panel - even adding more than a few essential keywords into the admin panel I will not have the time to do so.

While blogrush.com is a interesting tool, I will not have to get a tool that will take away time from me or my team to administer “settings” “filters” “controls” - however you name it.

    ADD SOMETHING LIKE:
“Flag This Blog” - “Report This Blog” into your widget - maybe create a frame that is displayed at the top of the website while directing to someones blog beneath it, so you might have space to add such reporting tools.

I am sick of seeing a lot of poor content blogs and blogrush.com will get off faster on my blog and not even added on the 30+ blogs where I have considered to add it, yet, if this is not taken care of.

PS: Not all is bad, there were some real gems to be found in the blog network so far!

    John,
The entire blogrush experience has been a great business case study. There is always the irony of you spending thousands upon thousands of dollars to provide something FREE to folks and then they complain. It never ceases to amaze me.

Now, of course by your own admission there were some real issues, but like you said without launching the issues would not have been discovered nearly as fast.
And you’ve been upfront about this being a business venture and not an altruistic event so as far as I’m concerned the people who complain (vs constructive feedback) they should use the same tool they were using before you created blogrush…and I selected the word ‘tool’ on purpose.

The changes are great and I’m excited to continue to learn how to get the maximum value from blogrush because as I’m understanding it the better I’m able to max the blogrush then everybody wins.

The filter is a real winner.

I do want to say that I can’t figure out how to get the widget to the side part of my blog and the tutorial says it will address using ‘themes’ on a later video so once I get that I will get the widget to the side.

You ARE appreciated and keep blazing trials.

I’m excited to have more traffic sent my way and I hope that you all approve of my blog!

I thought the email was one of the most interesting and entertaining reads I’ve had in awhile. I like it that you came out with both guns blazing, there’s not enough of that nowadays.

  55. Maritza Says:

I appreciate the improvements you’re trying to make but I haven’t received a single hit since joining BlogRush. I’m sticking it out and seeing if things improve, visiting other blogs, etc but I must admit that I’m disappointed. Maybe I’m doing something wrong?

  56. Jason Says:

I would like to suggest splitting the Health and Medicine into two categories. We are a yoga based website that pertains to Health and Wellness articles but would like to avoid links to sites for drugs, ie viagra and such which really don’t pertain to health per say.

  57. John Reese Says:

Semmy - actually “Blogrush” is supposed to be in our global filter so they don’t show in any category. I need to inquire with our developers why that’s apparently not working. Thanks.

  58. Meg H. Says:

Oh, hey, I wanted to mention that the email with this blog in it came to my actual gmail inbox & not the gmail spam box like the other 3 emails did. Cool!

  59. Terri Holley Says:

YOU GUYS ROCK! Hang in there. There is no failing only learning. Big ideas come from big people. Thanks for showing up big during this tough time. You’ve set a great example for the rest of us. May the fearless spirit of entrepreneurship live on!

  60. Goblin Says:

hm… i think it would be very hard to review blog one by one. how many blogs? 1 hundred then 1 thousand then 1 million and then million of million of million square….
oh GOD… give BLOGRUSH the smartest solution… I Hope :)

  61. Paul Says:

I wonder how they will review each blog manually. Considering all the publicity BlogRush is getting, it would probably take a long time to add your blog.

I guess with any new system/application it takes time to get al lthe bugs worked out, and close any holes that people can exploit. I’ll have to see what happens, especially if I get some clicks.

  62. Glen Says:

It is humanly impossible for blogRush to validate and exhonerate or deplete millions of Blogs.
My experience onthe net tells me tahtyou are so excited about your release BUT! It isnt a very well thought out plan.
You havent budgeted for one…You stated that you would hire as many as it would take to find the so called spammers, culprits and that would ensure your family of programmers their jobs.
Now this is not to be mean…this is common sense, you are in a hole right now and it is getting deeper.
You launched without trial and error, you launched “pretending to think all would be ok” But the reality is BlogRush…Has failed.
    To this date anyways…
My analysis of the current situation at hand is this:
You have thousands of people saying: “Gee! Its Great!Lets Go!”
Yet on the other hand you have members like me thatare reading between the lines.
    Your launch has failed.
Close it down now…revamp it properly…test it…make sure it is working properly…and stop appoligizing for mistakes you didnt render or expect.
People dont want to hear that its going tobe ok.
People dont want to hear you threaten them with door knockings, especially since you are getting grave reviews, like who are you?
Just another PC geek with influences on capitolizations of the internet.
Do yourself a favour and save it while you can.
Dont send out threatening emails, send out and appoligy and state you will come back as soon as the bugs are worked out.
    Between you and me?
One hour of say sorry is worth more then ten years of high school and diplomas shot down the drain.

  63. Jt Hollister Says:

    Well dang,

You guys are on the ball. Many thanks for the response to customer support.

Quick suggestion: I’d like to be able to select multiple categories for one blog. Maybe a maximum of 5 or something.

    Thanks :)

  65. Jt Hollister Says:

I just had to say this,

To all the people who are haters (more specifically, to “Glen”):

John Reese is one of the smartest Internet Marketers alive. He is the first person to go on record to have made $1 mil in a single day. He’s done it many, many, MANY times over by now. I can assure you that this _IS_ well thought out, and he _DOES_ know what he’s doing.

    Good day.

  66. Glen Says:

    Who is a hater?

Obviously you are non proliferiant to constructive critisism and advancemnet?

  67. Jt Hollister Says:

    Glen,
Your criticism was not constructive, it was offensive and just plain unwarranted. You don’t know what you’re talking about. This guy has more money than you’ll ever had, and he got it by being smart about doing business on the Internet.

You also don’t seem to understand one of the most basic principles of doing business online: You don’t sit there planning all day until you have it perfect. You plan as much as you can, but then you LAUNCH it. And things will ALWAYS come up, nothing EVER goes as planned. This is true even for big businesses. He’s not perfect, and I don’t expect him to be. But his apology means a lot, and the threats he made are nothing short of comforting to those who are not involved in trying to abuse the system.

  68. Glen Says:

I guess ten plus years online make meineligable to portray some Constructive Critisism.

Maybe I should spend another 150 thousand dollars in ecourses, that way i will think like you.

I have sat and thought for over two years for my online business, which is more then any fly by night opportunity you can throw at me.

You seemed to have missed the point which is understandable…you are nieve in the world of online trade.

By the way…No one is perfect…but anyone that wants to remain credibleonline must accept defeat also.

Yes his appology means a lot…ti me that has wasted my time promoting to my freinds that have been online for many years and have thousands upon thousands of members watching this.

  74. star Says:

will my site get accepted? how will i know?

  75. Jt Hollister Says:

    Glen,

No, “ten plus years online” doesn’t qualify you to provide anything. My mom’s got 15 years online, but that’s 15 years on Neopets. There’s nothing wrong with that, but it certainly doesn’t make her a marketing expert.

More importantly, you can spend 10 years trying to paint something black with white paint, it means nothing. The only thing that matters is whether you have the right information. So “ten plus years” means nothing to me, or to the real world.

The truth is, I don’t know WHAT your qualifications are, and frankly I really don’t care. I DO know John Reese’s qualifications however, or at least some of them, and I know enough to know that they far exceed your own.

Also, for all your attempt to sound like a seasoned and knowledgable online marketable, your last comment doesn’t increase my confidence that this is the case. “Go pee on someone else tree that you think you know.”

  76. Odessa, TX Says:

Well, even though I don’t have many articles, the ones I do have are written by me and will hopefully meet your criterion. I would love the person reviewing my blog to read the blog and comment on some of my stuff in my Texas forum.

  81. Scorpiono Says:

John, with all the respect, you are doing a great job for webmasters, you are indeed one of the best online marketeers out there, but I personally have a problem. I hate it everytime I hear “INCREEEDIBLE, SHOCKING, EXTREME, SUPER, BIG *CHANGES*, HUGE STUFF” etc.. is that part of the marketing? If it is, it’s losing me!

  82. Red Ink Says:

This is all very well, but Blogrush is so USA-centric, it is pratically useless in other coutries … unless the content can be sifted to include only country specific stuff (no, I dunno how you do that, as the domain URL will not help you.)

  84. Patrick Ryall Says:

I have to agree with Scorpiono, tone down the fluff in the writing. We are undergoing massive changes in the Australian marketing fraternity, garish loud marketing has never worked, and now such marketing is burning out.

Everyone needs to lift there game, you may get a few sign ups with this technique but you burn most of the market. People are already seeing that most marketing is not working because people are switching off more than ever before. We are becoming known as the un plugged generation.

Lift your marketing game, and truly find success within a market.

John - keep doing what you are doing man. With a project of this magnitude you will always get the naysayers and that’s a good sign.

It means you’re blazing a new trail.

Big ideas often make people feel uncomfortable for two main reasons…

    1) It forces them to change

    ..or

    2) There’s a sense of jealousy

Those of us who understand the term “Beta” knew the potential of BlogRush which is why we signed up and it’s the same reason we’ll continue to stand by you and the service.

The recent changes are excellent and we can’t wait to see what else is coming down the pipeline :)

Just make sure you get some sleep!

    Take care.

    Stu

  87. Jon Heller Says:

Having just spent the last 40 minutes reading all 81 replies to John’s letter, I find myself in a sublime, stunned silence.

An hour ago I had no questions at all about BlogRush; Now I have many.

The central question being, “How did something that is, in very simple theory, a “traffic exchange for blogs” make the leap from a marketers tool to a “Revolution” sometime between the beta and today’s letter?”

Next, ‘How is it that John and his staff did not know that the one group that will protect, defend and “own” stuff they did not pay for even more fiercly than Internet marketers are Bloggers?”

    Which brings me to BlogRush.

Having somehow missed all of the build-up hype, (don’t ask me-I was here), I learned of BlogRush a week ago. I dutifully signed-up, placed a little code on my blog, and forgot about it. Forgot about it until yesterday.

While reviewing my logs yesterday afternoon, I had the pleasant surprise of seeing multiple visits (unique) originating from BlogRush widgets on other peoples blogs. For a blog less than a month old to be receiving traffic in multiples from any single source is quite a feat. When you factor in PPC/PPA/PPV, ($0.00) the feat quickly becomes almost miraculous.

Maybe I’m missing something, but the way I see it, I loaded code, posted a link and sent a few emails. In exchange I received new, unique visitors. And it cost me Zero. Zip. Zilch. Nada. Nothing.

I’d have to say you’ve held up your end of the deal, John. Stop apologizing.

No one (that I know of) has paid for the privilige of complaining.

And no one is being forced to keep the code on their pages. Those that do and still complain are nothing if not hypocrites.

So Congrats on the Successful Launch! Keep them Uniques Coming!

If anyone can help with a question about removing a blog from BlogRush… I know there are a lot of bloggers who added the widet and then removed it and did not follow through on the BlogRush account end, so their feed is showing on others blogs. I know a lot of people who fit in that category. Respectable bloggers. Maybe not the most sophisticated people when it comes to social media, but not people trying to game the system. .

They’ve taken the widget off their blog but they still show on the feed. I tried to go remove one of my blogs so that I could o give directions to someone and I could not figure our how to remove the feed. How do you totally remove a blog? Or do they quit BlogRush all together?

  93. Amit Solomon Says:

    Hey John,

You are one of the very few I consider a mentor when it comes to internet marketing. And I’m always learning from what you do.

I find BlogRush to be a really great concept and I’m completely for the service. It’s great to know that your team will be manually verifying each blog. But let me play the devil’s advocate right now (not something I like doing but doing it because it might help make BlogRush even stronger)

One, before you begin the manual review process, perhaps it would be best to have clear guidelines given at the BlogRush site about what is acceptable and what is not. Perhaps this information is tucked away somewhere (I couldn’t find it) but it needs to be clearly visible at the sign-up page as well as somewhere prominent in the admin panel. And you should state the repurcussions as well for flouting the terms of membership. (Ban just the blog or ban the blogger?)

Two, considering the way BlogRush is spreading virally, your company would require an immense number of people for reviewing each site - especially when the blogs number into hundreds of thousands. As someone has already pointed out, a “Report This Site” kind of button on the BlogRush widget would allow users to help you nail down the offenders faster. Let your ethical users act as your eyes - you’ll catch offenders faster.

More importantly, it’s very easy for unethical people to have a blog that appears clean and legit, and then once your initial manual preview is done, to change it to the more spammier variety. (I believe a lot of people were doing this kind of stuff when submitting to Yahoo directory as their editors would manually review all submissions)

And there’s no reasonable way for your team to keep checking all the member blogs at random intervals. That’s why an automated solution would far better (including a built-in abuse reporter)

Google is a huge 900-pound gorilla with immense financial power and technical strength and yet people still keep finding ways to fool it. BlogRush will also keep facing challenges and you must continue thinking two steps ahead. Maybe have someone on your team whose job is to think like an unethical spammer.

I’m sure you already have some kind of an IP checker built-in that flags blogs whose page views are artificially being inflated through automated means or through manually refreshing a page hundreds of times.

All these challenges - in a way - should be welcome as they prove that BlogRush is destined to reach great heights. The very fact that so many people are trying to use unethical tactics to gain some advantage is proof enough that you’ve hit jackpot.

What is pirated are books like the Harry Potter series. Not some run-of-the-mill trashy whodunit that no one wants to buy even at a cut-rate discount bookstore.

    Stay passionate!

    Have a super day!

Here’s how you remove your blog from BlogRush:

    (Taken from the FAQ)

At this time, we are requiring that you send your request to support@blogrush.com with “Delete Blog” in the subject line, as well as a description of the blog(s) you would like deleted, and we’ll manually delete your chosen blogs for you.

My site deals with Crystal Healing, Reiki and also other Alternative healing methods and does not really fit in the Health Category maybe and Alternative Health or Self-Help for all of us outside the Health/Medicine box.

You seem to have stirred up some emotions judging by the previous posts, don’t take it to heart just use what you need and discard the rest. I like the idea of blogs being screen and I also wonder how will we know if we pass or not I suppose if the Widget does not disappear from my blogs then I will assume that I have passed.

I am very happy with the traffic I am getting and look forward to all the new visitors.

I just wanted to say thanks. BlogRush may still be working out the kinks, but I see great potential and plan to use it on all of my blogs, directing traffic to my two main ones. The Flavors are rather cool, as well, although they tend to make me hungry . . .

  99. NathanFalkner Says:

John, I was surprised by the hysterical tone you took in admonishing the cheaters to “please stop” or else the legal hammer will have to come down hard because of all the people who are financially supported by your company.

The way I see it, if the system works, it works. If it’s susceptible to minor amounts of cheating, so be it - no system is perfect. But by the tone you took, it left the impression that the system *CAN* be gamed in a significant way no matter what you and your team try to do.

When threatening to “track people to their doorstep” and to prosecute them to the fullest extent of the law is something you feel the need to publicly state, it suggests to me that you guys have no idea how to really keep the problem of cheating contained to acceptably minimal levels within the technological infrastructure that you’ve developed.

  100. Joe Justin Says:

It looks like you everything planned and well in hand. But I agree with several previous posts, please have very clear guidelines for what your team would consider an unacceptable blog. But I’m sure you’ve already thought of all that, so I guess I am probably preaching to the choir. Just keep up the really good work.

I have rasied it with your support but I’m not getting a response and I have now even removed the widget due to the blank space its now created on my blog….

Hi, I just joined recently and I’m not quite sure how the program works? One minute I’m told I have, lets say, 100 credits, then later I have 50, minus = 50? How do you get minus credits? What does a minus credit mean? It doesn’t seem to matter what I do or don’t do, the credits don’t seem to add up? What gives? One minute they are up and the next they are down; not sure if its a good or bad thing?

Is there not some type of simple list that tells you what you can, or can not do with Blogrush?

Also, how many widgets can you put on your website at any one time? If you have the space, can you put more than one?

I would also like to know if my web site will ever be featured on the widget directly in my web site, or if it can only be seen on other web sites widgets?

  128. Don Says:

I was wondering, and I forgot to ask in my last post, is it ok to click on blog links from within the blogrush widget on your own site?

Also, I log onto my site a million times a day, does this effect blogrush, or like wordpress, it automatically doesn’t count them?

  129. Serge Nanovsky Says:

When I clicked on my own widget, my balance turned out negative. But now that’s explained as “don’t worry it’s okay”.. so I guess clicking on your own widget is allowed.

  130. Don Says:

Thanks Serge, I appreciate your answer. But what about logging onto your site to update it, or in my case to just look at it and my little ‘amungus’ map widget?

I just joined, so if I’m doing something wrong, I sure would like to know so I could stop it? The idea of blogrush is great and I noticed my map widget seemed to do better with it installed.

Also, most people have one blogwidget, can you put several on your site if you have the space?

  131. Matt Anderson Says:

If you’re still reading comments, you may want to have someone edit your emails before you send them out. You said: “Please bare with us.” I think you mean “bear.” The mistake is rather amusing, though.

  132. Victory Darwin Says:

Glad to hear about the cleanup, and appreciate you keeping in communication with us John.

QUESTION, if anyone knows, please click my name and post on my site. VERY much appreciated.

does blogrush show only posts made after I joined, or does it cycle through my old blog posts. If so, I will need to go and filter out many which is a lot of work.

Also, does it rotate through all my posts evenly, or just display the latest post until a newer one comes.

    thanks!

I will wait as long as it takes because I have 100% faith that John Reese will continue to develop BlogRush to his users’ specifications.

BlogRush is FREE and yet John treats us members as though we are paying customers!

The first thing this place should do is hire someone who can write a letting. Jesus. who’s the highschool kid that wrote this? No wonder people are removing this crap en mass.

By the way, your widget is killing you. nobody wants that garbage widget look. make it plain and manageable.

This isn’t a fad, you’re right. it’s a joke. Next time you should be ready when you open a site, and not be backpedaling for weeks to make up for things you did wrong to begin with.

    You blew it.

  141. Amit Solomon Says:

Dear “ex- user with a busy news site”:

You wrote: “The first thing this place should do is hire someone who can write a letting.”

Ahem! That’s one fine piece of writing, I must say. Perhaps John would be kind enough to hire you for writing all his “lettings”.

    Talk about “crap” writing!

  142. Holly Says:

THANK YOU for finally putting something on our stats page besides “currently unavailable”.

I am quite interested to see what new things are being rolled out. AND since this is a free service, I think some of the bickering and complaining is childish. If you don’t like what’s going on, simply delete your account and widget. I’m going to give it some more time, and if I don’t think it’s effective for ME - then I’ll decide. But for now - give them a break.

Is anyone at customer support responding to emails?

  144. technabob Says:

I’m a little concerned that there’s something amiss with the system here. I’ve had the BlogRush widget on my site for about 4 days now, and delivered over 40,000 impressions to it.

However, I still have no reporting information, and according to my server logs, I’ve only gotten ONE pageview that came from a “widget.blogrush.com” referrer URL. Obviously, if I only get one visitor in exchange for 40k impressions, I think I’ll have to remove the widget pretty quickly. However, I’m guessing that this might be a technical issue, and that nobody is seeing my links.

Without a functional reporting interface, I have no idea what’s up. What’s the ETA on having ANY report data available?

  145. BlogRush. Will it stay or will it go? Says:

[…] This might change over time. But, at this point, the kettle is black. 150. Jill Says:

I have complete faith that BlogRush will be awesome. All new things have their bugs and hiccups. No big deal. I will be anxiously awaiting the reopening of the new release! :)

  151. Don Says:

Paul N, great idea to temporarily disable blog rush…. as I am worried that I may be guilty of something that I don’t even know I’m doing. I’m scared to even visit my blog lest I accidentally create false impressions or clicks.

I wish there was a page that simple said what we can, or can not do with the widget. I love the whole concept of blogrush and I am willing to do my part to make it a success, but that is hard when your not even sure of the rules!

I’m rooting for blogrush, but like you, I will wait until we get more info before putting it back online.

All the best Blogrush… I’m rooting for you! “o)

  152. badthing Says:

  156. Moviego Says:

Wow I have noticed the link to my sites is popping up all over the place, I went to 7 different blogs today and I found my site link on 4 of them in the Brush widget.’

good job so far guys….Hopefully the stat page is fixed soon and we get rid of the
    cheaters.

And to Don: Clicking on your own sites is not against the rules, my blog editor auto launches my blog every time I post something new. I don’t think you have anything to worry about.

  157. tom r Says:

    I’m just trying to learn…lol

    Heaven and Blogrush help me!

  158. Don Says:

Thanks Moviego; still, I’m scared to do anything, until I find out what I can, or can’t do. I have never seen my blog listed in a blogrush widget. Only that I get a certain amount of credits and then, negative credits. I have no idea if or what I am doing, right or wrong and until I do, I will disable my blogrush, hoping to get back when they finally fix things.

I am hoping and willing to everything I can to promote blogrush, but for now, I want to play it safe. I will wait it out, at least, for now.

    Hi,

I just joint BlogRush, and I think what you are doing and the idea behind it is fantastic.

The only problem I have now, I can not use it as the Widget size does not fit into my blogs, I have 3 blogs and all themes do not permit the size / wight of the widget.

If you look at DiggIt, there you are able to adjust the size, I believe I’am not the only one with this issue.

Anyhow, thank you for this great service
