More Categories, Bonus Traffic Reporting

We’re hard at work improving BlogRush — thanks to your suggestions!

We’ll soon be adding A LOT more categories to our network — Fitness, Fashion, Crafts (and specific hobbies), MMA (and other individual sports), specific religions, political types, and much, much more.

UPDATE: I’ll add categories that others post in the comments (along with the ones I mentioned above) that I am pretty certain we will add:

FITNESS
FASHION
CRAFTS
SELF HELP
WORK AT HOME
MMA
GOLF

Want To Suggest A Category? Let Us Know (Post A Comment)

By adding more specific categories we’ll be able to serve more relevant blog headlines and thus increase the click-rates across the network — which increases the traffic for everyone.

Bonus Traffic Reporting

We’re working to add “Bonus Traffic” to the Dashboard. Right now many users are getting a lot of bonus credits and clicks and you’ll soon be able to view that data.

This is only the beginning… we have TONS of improvements in the works. Stay tuned.

  1. Get High Pagerank Backlinks Says:

    Category Suggestion: Work At Home

    Thanks!

  2. Yavor Says:

Category: fitness (sports is too general)

  3. Eric Says:

How about B2B for a new category? And John, thanks for listening to your base and moving to make changes to improve the system. There are always challenges with any new service or system. How you handle those challenges make all the difference.
    Well done so far.

  4. John Reese Says:

Eric - what kind of B2B info? Do you mean services? Give me some examples please. Thanks!

  5. A Blog about Nothing Says:

How about a general category for those of us who don’t blog in a single niche? I mean I can switch categories depending on what category fits each of my latest posts, but it might make more sense to have a category like general. Or misc. I’m sure there’s more than me who blogs outside of the “popular” niches.

  6. Eric Says:

Hey John. Yeah, B2B Services would be what I had in mind.
BTW, glad to see MMA is getting a category!

  7. Ellipsis Aeon Says:

Tips For Generating Traffic With BlogRush…

  9. Dom Delimar Says:

And how about the possibility to select more than one category? For those of us who don’t have a blog that fits in only one category. It’s not unusual at all that a blogger covers a range of topics in one blog.

    Pretty please ;)

  10. The Mall Blog Says:

    Categories:

    Shopping
    Photopblog (Under Photography)

  11. David at free Christian resources Says:

I agree with Dom. Whilst I don’t need the functionality of multiple categories, that idea popped into my head straight away. If it didn’t have this I think many blogs would have skewed headlines showing.

  12. Patty Says:

I am very pleased to be a part of your trafficing program. Thanks for the opportunity

  13. Andy Says:

    Suggested categories:

    *Online Betting
    *Poker

Could go under 1 general category: Gambling

    Thanks,
    Andy

  14. Willie Williams Says:

    Category Ebay Tips And tricks

  15. Chuck Anthony Says:

Hello John, you may want to change the category of “Health & Medicine”
    to “Health & Wellness” and then add a separate category for “Medicine”;
reason being, the demographic profile of each market. Thanks for the
    great work here.

  16. Zybron Says:

Yes, please, multiple categories. My blog tends to focus on technology, games, and movies and right now I have to pick which of those three areas I’d like to focus on for a category. Multiple categories would be the way to go.

  17. Sami Says:

Sub-Categories for Religions and then Sub-Categories of that as well

Categories on HTML, PHP and blogging software will help.

  20. Mike Says:

I think Business is a little broad, too.

Maybe break it down by adding sales, advertising, etc.

  21. Patric Says:

I can’t post a comment it seems… Or can I ? Are you managing the comments before they’re visible ?

  22. Patric Says:

  23. Shane Says:

Hey John, some other popular themes around the net for blogs are:

    - Entrepreneurship
    - Productivity

And you forgot the most important category!! Blogs about …

    - Blogging

  24. Neil Natura Says:

    Hey man,

    Looks good.

I think it would be cool with “Dating”

    Neil //

  25. Scott Hove Says:

    Category suggestion: Political - Humor

  26. Taylor Says:

I don’t know where the appropriate place is to ask this, so I’m just asking anyone that can help me here.

Why do I keep ending up with negative credit balance? Does this hurt me? I’m not worried about it, exactly, I just don’t have much traffic to my new blog yet. I’m not going to be one of those negative folks who just jumps ship, I was just wanting to know what is causing it, and what I can do.

Also, after reading Darren Rowse’s article at problogger about throwing the baby out with the bathwater, i started thinking that we bloggers (on his suggestion) should start to be more proactive and figure out together how this thing works.

Yesterday, I just started surfing the widget…. I found several cool blogs this way, and I didn’t find much that I thought was a “cheat” or a fake blog. But I don’t know how someone would cheat anyway….. I’m not very expert at this thing… I don’t even know how to post video to my WordPress blog.

Categories: K12 education, more breakdowns of the current categories, like niches withing politics, etc.

  27. Kevin Quigley Says:

Help. Not being the brightest light in
the universe when it comes to “techie” stuff…

I’ve personally Introduced 8 direct (thus far) but the thing
is I won’t be able to benefit from the “blogosphere”
as I need a rss feed “thang”. i read up on what feeds
are but how the heck do I get my own as I cannot submit
a blogosphere of my own til I do.

    Thanks,

    Kevin

  28. AboutBlogging.Info Says:

One of my blogs is a blog about growing bonsai trees. Maybe the ‘Home & Garden’ section could have a gardening sub-category to eliminate all the DIY nonsense!

  29. Randy Says:

    Hey John,

    How ’bout “Food”?

(Then, we’ll get into more specifics later…)

    Thanks & Congrats!
    Randy

  30. Roger Gonzales Says:

John, I think that LinkMetro has a very detail breakdown of Categories and Subcategories.

    Thanks,

    Roger

  31. Yehuda Berlinger Says:

    Games
    - Video and computer games
    - Tabletop games

  32. Hans Says:

I would suggest a category: “Make Money Online”

Congratulation for your successful launch of BlogRush!

    Hans

  33. Jamie Davies Says:

A science category is necessary I feel. Also maybe a social science section too (perfect for my blog)

    -Jamie

  34. firstpokerhelp.com Says:

You neglect a big one: POKER

    Guess what is #1 in
    http://50.lycos.com for example

  35. max Says:

    Hey John,

Can we use your RSS feeds for BlogRush on our new site,

    http://zedomax.biz ?

It’s a new social network for money making ideas.

We are looking for 30 money making blogs to participate in our beta testing.

  36. Anita Cross Says:

    Suggested Categories:
    - Internet Marketing/SEO
    - eCommerce
    - Hiking & Backpacking
    - Camping
    - Photoblogs
    - Dogs
    - Cats

Besides more specific categories, I’d like a way to block groups of sites: “adult”sites, gambling sites, etc.

Perhaps some options in the Add a Blog area, where we would select if our site is “family” or “adult” oriented. And then some further refining with options to indicate if our blog contains content that’s perhaps not universally acceptable: nudity, gambling, AdSense prohibited content, etc.

Then under filters, an account holder could indicate content to block based on these indicators by ticking a check box.

It would be especially helpful if we could indicate, by a check box, if our site displays AdSense, and have BlogRush automatically filter out any content that might endanger our AdSense accounts.

    Thanks,
    -Anita

  37. Sam Says:

    Please add these categories:

    Food
    Freebies
    Health

  38. don Says:

John ; I would like to see a model rail roading category.

  39. Roger Carr Says:

I would like you to add the category Charity/Nonprofit.

  40. robert Says:

    Thanks

  41. Jeff Hall - www.crisp100dollarbills.com Says:

    Hi John,

I saw a comment above by Willie Williams - eBay Tips and Tricks.

    I agree totally.

There are so many blogs on the internet devoted to
this subject, that it only makes sense to add it to the category list.

    Thanks

Blogrush widget DOWN? I cant see it anywhere. And alexa stats is also going downward.

  43. Tony Says:

    John and BlogRush Team,
    Nice job and thank you!
How about a sub category for outdoors sports.

  44. Dave Says:

I will second the above suggestion for camping or at least a general outdoors cat.
    Thanks

  45. 3TeraByte 300000MB hosting Says:

Please anyone here can tell me? I cant see any blogrush widget on any website. Server down? Anyone? can you see the widget? weird..

  46. Theresa Says:

I am so pleased to see you are adding a crafts category. I’ll second the request for home based business.

3TeraByte - My widget is working fine and I haven’t noticed any down time with it tonight.

  47. JoeWong Says:

Please kindly consider to include TECHNOLOGY category.

  48. mblair Says:

It would be interesting to setup a poll for new categories and have readers vote for them — not as the final say in the matter but to help get input. I’m sure there must be some polling systems that allow suggestions too.

  49. Martin Neumann Says:

    I’d like to see:

    1. home business
    2. Australia

  50. Chuck Anthony Says:

Wow, it’s a veritable cornucopia of categories here. I like Shane’s suggestions
for adding Leadership, Entrepreneurship and Productivity.

  51. Danny @ Blogs For Money Says:

Some “make money online” style categories would be good. My blog details how to make money using PPC (AdWords) with referrals (eg. Amazon Associates) but currently there’s not really much it fits into that doesn’t result in lots of unrelated headlines (and my headlines showing on lots of unrelated sites!)

  52. Teri Fitzgerald Says:

    Alternative Medicine
    and/or
    Natural Health

    :)

  53. Damian Says:

    John,

Will there be anything for non-informational dating consulting?
    Like live coaching?

    -D

  54. Party Poker Mods Says:

    Gambling & Poker.

I see no need to eliminate all gambling related blogs from the network. Just let us be separate from the other blogs. There are plenty of white hat gambling websites out there, and with a manual review of each blog on the network already in place, I see no problem finding and eliminating spammy blogs.

    Thanks,
    Nick

  55. Shamus Brown Says:

    Category Suggestion: Sales.

I write Sales Tips for sales people. The Marketing Category is way too broad to give be relevant to my target audience.

I would like to see a category entitled Sales or Selling.

    Thanks.

  56. Z Solomons Says:

Hi John here some are that could help. Could we also have a section which country blog rush can show from and also the time as well.

Home Improvements, Gardening, Sports indoor, Sports outdoor, Education, Software Development, Managment Training, Graphic Design

Web Development, Programming, Outsource, DIY, Call center service, Trucks, Motor spares, Travel, Selp Improvement ,Investments

    Medical Help

    Here are B2B examples:

Consulting , Engineering , Training and Development , Research and Development , Publishing Outsource, Office Equipment, Manufacturing Supplies

Manufacturing Equipment, Wholesalers Import and Export, Dropshipping.

  57. Lynn Mercurio Says:

    May I suggest two categories:

    Rubber Stamping
    Scrapbooking

    Thanks!

  58. Chad Says:

How about adding different sized widgets? The current size is too big/small for some of our blogs. We would love to see some different sizes soon :)

    Great tool though!

  59. bob Says:

    what about a career section

  60. Ryan Says:

A section for extreme sports or something specific like rock climbing.

  61. Taylor Says:

Kevin, I just happened to post an answer to your question on my blog tonight. Other people are asking the same!

  62. Bill Simon Says:

BlogRush is a great concept, John!

BUT…the category of “Marketing” is way too broad. Please consider the possibility of breaking it further down into:

    Marketing for e-businesses
Marketing for Bricks & Mortar Businesses

  63. amominred Says:

PLEASE add beauty or a combo beauty/fashion!
    thx!

  64. multiplier method Says:

    natural health and dating

    Those would be good.

  65. Lika Starr Says:

You knew someone would suggest this sooner or later. So I’ll jump right in and make the request.

    Category:

    Gay/Lesbian or GLBT or LGBT

Whichever one you prefer as long as one of them gets in. Thanks.

  66. Alex @ EnergyPlanet Says:

Please consider a category for renewable energy, there are 1,000s of clean technology blogs out there!

  67. Charles Hodgson Says:

While the category list is necessary, as can be seen from the comments so far, there are problems with lists of categories. There are too many to keep track of and too many means it’s harder for people to choose the right one. And even too many is not enough.

A far better approach will be to integrate a prediction engine as they do at Amazon or Google that sifts through the text in a blog, compares it to text in another blog, then predicts which blogs are the best matches for people’s interest. The engine then keeps track of it’s success at prediction and throws away the bad matches (the ones that don’t result in clicks) and reinforces the good ones.

Do you think Google can serve the page you wanted, or Amazon be so amazingly accurate in its suggestions by having long lists of categories?

  68. Blaine Moore Says:

I like the idea of multiple categories or parent categories etc - one good way to implement it is to have a primary category (as now) and then allow sub-categories that will aid your algorithm in picking something relevant, especially when there isn’t something to serve from the main category.

Fitness is an important one to add; I’d like to see a running subcategory, but would be happy with fitness.

  69. Ryan Says:

I’d like to see a site for music. Although that may be too broad of a topic so you could add in the different music genres ie: hip hop, country, rock, r&b, etc.

  70. Carlos Xuma Says:

I’d like to see a category related to dating advice added, please.

  71. Brenda Says:

    Category Suggestions:

    Security
    Privacy

    Thanks!

  72. Mikael Pittam Says:

    Category Suggestion: Islam

You can see the need for this request by visiting our post: http://islamcrunch.com/archives/muslim-blogrush/

    Thanks!

  73. Solace Says:

    Category Suggestion: Relationships
and Personal Development (although is that same as self help?)

there is nothing for dating tips/relationship info blogs

  74. Michelle Hoffmann Says:

    metaphysical

  75. Solace Says:

Just another suggestion, why not have a report this blog button if you right click on a headline in the blogrush widget so that people can report spam and illegal blogs and if there are enough reports they will be flagged for your team to have a look at them, will make cleaning up the crap blogs a lot faster.

  76. bjc Says:

I definitely agree that a hierarchical system is the best way to do this. A top-level and a sub-level. There are two sides to this in my opinion: a) It allows the blog owner to have more-targetted reciprocal blog entries, as well as those from the top level, should there be a limited number to choose from in the specific category. But the issue is b) How does the admin categorize such content? Does Music go under Entertainment, and then Rock under Music? Three levels is too much. Does “Internet Business” go under Business or Internet? It could be both, depending on how the blog owner actually focuses their site. I ran into this issue when trying to write a system to categorize music for a client.

Bottom line: Two-levels deep — Good. Forethought into how the subcategories will align — Difficult, but worth it IMHO.

Keep up the good work! Can’t wait to see the next rev…

  77. Damian Says:

Agreed with Carlos Xuma on dating.
He’s the man! Hey man, I’m glad your here.

Expect I want to see something about live coaching/workshops/dating-consulting, as I said above also.

    Skateboarding and rollar blading

  83. john umland Says:

I understand there needs to be a limit on multiple categories, but I blog on history, religion, green construction, and fitness, so I’d need 5 checks. More categories without multiple picks pigeonhole even more. So please allow us scatterbrains a few more check marks.
thanks. I am already getting hits from the widget so thanks.
    God is good
    jpu

  84. Imma (Alice) Says:

My blog is not limited to one topic, it has an interesting variety. I need to be able to include more checks, like John Umland in the above comment. My blog categories include: Spirituality, Pets, my Photography, Quotes, Hobbies & Crafts, Health related as in weight loss, weekly memes, poetry, other writings… and various other topics. So, as you can see, listing under one category just doesn’t work for me. I think there are many of us bloggers out there that have the same issues… I’ve seen many others like mine that post on various topics.

  85. Yvonne Says:

Please Please consider ‘Textile Art’ as a category

  86. Gord Says:

I run a web design blog, so if it hasn’t been added yet ‘WEBDESIGN’ would be a very useful category.

I also run a Photo blog featuring images of my cats. I’m using the ‘PETS’ category but
I’m getting post for dog, horses and other animals, even though I’ve filtered them out.

Can you add a ‘CATS’ and ‘DOGS’ category to cover the main types of pets?

  87. Pam Hoffman Says:

    Hi John!

I read most of the comments so maybe it was already mentioned..

My blog is about Internet Marketing Seminars and I get a lot of really weird stuff on the widget!

Something like Seminars, Internet Marketing Seminar, Conferences (maybe) would work a lot better as a choice for me.

    Thank you very much,
