More Categories, Bonus Traffic Reporting | |||

We’re hard at work improving BlogRush — thanks to your suggestions! We’ll soon be adding A LOT more categories to our network — Fitness, Fashion, Crafts (and specific hobbies), MMA (and other individual sports), specific religions, political types, and much, much more. UPDATE: I’ll add categories that others post in the comments (along with the ones I mentioned above) that I am pretty certain we will add: FITNESS Want To Suggest A Category? Let Us Know (Post A Comment) By adding more specific categories we’ll be able to serve more relevant blog headlines and thus increase the click-rates across the network — which increases the traffic for everyone. Bonus Traffic Reporting We’re working to add “Bonus Traffic” to the Dashboard. Right now many users are getting a lot of bonus credits and clicks and you’ll soon be able to view that data. This is only the beginning… we have TONS of improvements in the works. Stay tuned. |

How about B2B for a new category? And John, thanks for listening to your base and moving to make changes to improve the system. There are always challenges with any new service or system. How you handle those challenges make all the difference.
Well done so far.
September 21st, 2007 at 11:01 pm
Eric - what kind of B2B info? Do you mean services? Give me some examples please. Thanks!
September 21st, 2007 at 11:32 pm
How about a general category for those of us who don’t blog in a single niche? I mean I can switch categories depending on what category fits each of my latest posts, but it might make more sense to have a category like general. Or misc. I’m sure there’s more than me who blogs outside of the “popular” niches.
September 21st, 2007 at 11:33 pm
Hey John. Yeah, B2B Services would be what I had in mind.
BTW, glad to see MMA is getting a category!

And how about the possibility to select more than one category? For those of us who don’t have a blog that fits in only one category. It’s not unusual at all that a blogger covers a range of topics in one blog.
Pretty please

I agree with Dom. Whilst I don’t need the functionality of multiple categories, that idea popped into my head straight away. If it didn’t have this I think many blogs would have skewed headlines showing.

Hello John, you may want to change the category of “Health & Medicine”
to “Health & Wellness” and then add a separate category for “Medicine”;
reason being, the demographic profile of each market. Thanks for the
great work here.
September 22nd, 2007 at 5:20 am
Yes, please, multiple categories. My blog tends to focus on technology, games, and movies and right now I have to pick which of those three areas I’d like to focus on for a category. Multiple categories would be the way to go.

I don’t know where the appropriate place is to ask this, so I’m just asking anyone that can help me here.
Why do I keep ending up with negative credit balance? Does this hurt me? I’m not worried about it, exactly, I just don’t have much traffic to my new blog yet. I’m not going to be one of those negative folks who just jumps ship, I was just wanting to know what is causing it, and what I can do.
Also, after reading Darren Rowse’s article at problogger about throwing the baby out with the bathwater, i started thinking that we bloggers (on his suggestion) should start to be more proactive and figure out together how this thing works.
Yesterday, I just started surfing the widget…. I found several cool blogs this way, and I didn’t find much that I thought was a “cheat” or a fake blog. But I don’t know how someone would cheat anyway….. I’m not very expert at this thing… I don’t even know how to post video to my WordPress blog.
Categories: K12 education, more breakdowns of the current categories, like niches withing politics, etc.

Suggested Categories:
- Internet Marketing/SEO
- eCommerce
- Hiking & Backpacking
- Camping
- Photoblogs
- Dogs
- Cats
Besides more specific categories, I’d like a way to block groups of sites: “adult”sites, gambling sites, etc.
Perhaps some options in the Add a Blog area, where we would select if our site is “family” or “adult” oriented. And then some further refining with options to indicate if our blog contains content that’s perhaps not universally acceptable: nudity, gambling, AdSense prohibited content, etc.
Then under filters, an account holder could indicate content to block based on these indicators by ticking a check box.
It would be especially helpful if we could indicate, by a check box, if our site displays AdSense, and have BlogRush automatically filter out any content that might endanger our AdSense accounts.
Thanks,
-Anita

Some “make money online” style categories would be good. My blog details how to make money using PPC (AdWords) with referrals (eg. Gambling & Poker.
I see no need to eliminate all gambling related blogs from the network. Just let us be separate from the other blogs. There are plenty of white hat gambling websites out there, and with a manual review of each blog on the network already in place, I see no problem finding and eliminating spammy blogs.
Thanks,
Nick

Please consider a category for renewable energy, there are 1,000s of clean technology blogs out there!
September 24th, 2007 at 7:08 am
While the category list is necessary, as can be seen from the comments so far, there are problems with lists of categories. There are too many to keep track of and too many means it’s harder for people to choose the right one. And even too many is not enough.
A far better approach will be to integrate a prediction engine as they do at Amazon or Google that sifts through the text in a blog, compares it to text in another blog, then predicts which blogs are the best matches for people’s interest. The engine then keeps track of it’s success at prediction and throws away the bad matches (the ones that don’t result in clicks) and reinforces the good ones.
Do you think Google can serve the page you wanted, or Amazon be so amazingly accurate in its suggestions by having long lists of categories?
September 24th, 2007 at 7:35 am
I like the idea of multiple categories or parent categories etc - one good way to implement it is to have a primary category (as now) and then allow sub-categories that will aid your algorithm in picking something relevant, especially when there isn’t something to serve from the main category.
Fitness is an important one to add; I’d like to see a running subcategory, but would be happy with fitness.
September 24th, 2007 at 11:43 am
I’d like to see a site for music. Although that may be too broad of a topic so you could add in the different music genres ie: hip hop, country, rock, r&b, etc.

Just another suggestion, why not have a report this blog button if you right click on a headline in the blogrush widget so that people can report spam and illegal blogs and if there are enough reports they will be flagged for your team to have a look at them, will make cleaning up the crap blogs a lot faster.
September 24th, 2007 at 8:43 pm
I definitely agree that a hierarchical system is the best way to do this. A top-level and a sub-level. There are two sides to this in my opinion: a) It allows the blog owner to have more-targetted reciprocal blog entries, as well as those from the top level, should there be a limited number to choose from in the specific category. But the issue is b) How does the admin categorize such content? Does Music go under Entertainment, and then Rock under Music? Three levels is too much. Does “Internet Business” go under Business or Internet? It could be both, depending on how the blog owner actually focuses their site. I ran into this issue when trying to write a system to categorize music for a client.
Bottom line: Two-levels deep — Good. Forethought into how the subcategories will align — Difficult, but worth it IMHO.
Keep up the good work! Can’t wait to see the next rev…

My blog is not limited to one topic, it has an interesting variety. I need to be able to include more checks, like John Umland in the above comment. My blog categories include: Spirituality, Pets, my Photography, Quotes, Hobbies & Crafts, Health related as in weight loss, weekly memes, poetry, other writings… and various other topics. So, as you can see, listing under one category just doesn’t work for me. I think there are many of us bloggers out there that have the same issues… I’ve seen many others like mine that post on various topics.

I run a web design blog, so if it hasn’t been added yet ‘WEBDESIGN’ would be a very useful category.
I also run a Photo blog featuring images of my cats. I’m using the ‘PETS’ category but
I’m getting post for dog, horses and other animals, even though I’ve filtered them out.
Can you add a ‘CATS’ and ‘DOGS’ category to cover the main types of pets?
