Introducing BlogRush “Flavors” - And More News | |||

You’ve asked and we’ve listened! Introducing, BlogRush Flavors. (They’ll be available in a few days.) ![]() * Click to see a larger version in a new a window. You’ll be able to choose the color of your choice so it more closely matches the design of your blog. MORE NEWS… It seems that some people are trying to call BlogRush a “pyramid scheme” or stating “there’s just no way the future impressions will ever be able to be served based on the promises of what referrals will bring. The math is impossible like other schemes of this kind.” Anyone that is saying this doesn’t understand how BlogRush works… EVERY SINGLE IMPRESSION GETS REWARDED FOR *THAT* IMPRESSION AS IT HAPPENS. There is no “promise” of future rewards based on referral activity today. Each and every impression of the widget (and impression of the 5 headlines per widget) is rewarded AS IT HAPPENS. And when all the math is said and done, it also leaves 1 out of every 10 headline spaces left-over for BlogRush to use to monetize the service. So apparently some people think it’s all based on false promises that the network will eventually “catch up” and pay rewards in the future. This just isn’t the case. Every single impression that occurs is calculated and rewarded to the generations ‘above’ — that’s how the math has to work. We’re working hard to move to the 100% Manual Review Process as quickly as possible, and other improvements. As I’ve now said many times, our SOLE FOCUS is helping our members generate quality, targeted traffic. So we’re hard at work to make that happen. |

I think so many people make the easy assumption that it is a pyramid scheme because the referral networks are somewhat shaped like pyramids.
With the new styles, has any thought gone into making a few of the elements within, such as row colors, link color, font choice, etc controllable with CSS?
I think that the CTR would be better if it was a bit leaner and more blendable into a blog’s look & feel. These colors look like a great start though!

Great JOB John!
Those really look great.
Nice touch.

As in similar traffic-generation schemes, the proof will be whether sites continue to use the widget beyond the testing phase. If people keep it on their site, the widget could prove useful for some. However, if people in large numbers stop using the widget, its benefit will decrease and BlogRush will be tossed on the scrap heap of interesting idea, but flawed follow-through.
Its just a personal analysis. Anyone could be wrong.

I can’t wait fot this tool to really be useable. Don’t get me wrong, I love it as is, but there are “cheaters” and there are those one really do not want to link to throught Blogrush, so with the anticipated changes a’coming, I will continue to “rush blogs” and hope it evolves to the great tool it has potential to be.

First question I asked, was can I have it in red???
You obviously are listening….
I dunno why people are worrying about pyramid schemes? are they paying for something?? As far as I can see it’s a win-win….. lighten up people!
September 21st, 2007 at 7:11 am
Hurray! I’m so glad about the color choices being on the way
Good work!
September 21st, 2007 at 7:17 am
Great! I just installed the widget yesterday, and the lack of color choice was one of my concerns.
September 21st, 2007 at 7:27 am
Thanks for listening. Actually, I was hoping for the possibility to control some parts with CSS but this is a start.
I hope you get rid of the abusers very soon…

You guys are delivering an incredible tool. I really dig the dashboard graph and now the choice of colors … wow!
Good show!
September 21st, 2007 at 7:37 am
Nice colors! But I think that now You have to start with other languages. The great weak! I’m italian and I’m sure that we could do a great job. Why don’t you begin doing something like a “second category” (by language), and linking first when this field has the similar arguments, and just then all the english post ?
About colors… well done!
September 21st, 2007 at 7:37 am
Pyramid Scheme it may be, but it does work, my referrals have gone up, and have been tracked to the BlogRush widget. I have also found my blog displayed on other peoples BlogRush. You aren’t paying any money, there is nothing to lose on using this widget, just traffic to gain.

Hi,
I waiting for the flavors, because I need a green color which matches to my site http://freebooksstore.com/
September 21st, 2007 at 7:42 am
Hi John,
Are you aware of the fact that none of the WordPress.com bloggers (myself included) can benefit from this because the widget uses javascript which is not allowed on Wordpress.com for security purposes?
I have a SiteMeter widget embedded on my page which contains simply a hyperlink pointing to an asp script hosted on their server. Is there any chance BlogRush could work similarly or it’s just WordPress.com blogs are out of luck in this one (forever)?
Appreciate any response

I haven’t seen comments by anyone else who has this “condition.” I had to put the widget in my footer which, of course, puts it way at the bottom of a long page. I wanted to put it in my sidebar but the thing is so big it sticks out into the page or post. Can I resize it or resize my sidebar through the stylesheet? Even if I could put it in the sidebar, the thing is sort of ugly (the new colors might help)

Dont let these people worry you.
Blog readers and Worry warts this is for you
Folks there is more to worry bout then colors
and claims of pyramids….. If you take your energy and focus on networking
and promoting the rest will come natural. I have followed John Reese since 2000
and the guy has done amazing things with online marketing. The last thing he will touch
is anything affliated with schemes or so forth. Give this a chance and set the code
on your blogs and forget about the rest will come natural if you do your part
thanks to all that are sending good traffic and shame on the scripts that are cheating us
but how are they cheating us when its all been free
Thanks Joe

The basic color scheme worked fine for my blog but the new colors may fit other designs more seamlessly.
In the future, will the format of the widget also be more varied, perhaps a square or a larger rectangle?

The colors are a great idea. I’m waiting for blue. There will always be critics, half of what they saw may actually be useful. I thankful for the work you have put into. I only wish 1) it didn’t count my page loads (is that even honest) and 2) the categories were a bit more specific. I know “maritime” doesn’t burn up the internet like Paris Hilton but I’m sure these things will be ironed out in time.
Keep up the good work!

Great to see the color options, BUT how about letting users customize the color to their liking instead of having predefined templates? Also it would be nice to have a few size and shape options as well. Not everyone believes the sidebar is the best place for this thing.
September 21st, 2007 at 8:42 am
Pyramid scheme? The very concept of scheme involves the loss of money. These arguments hold no legal basis or grounds and should be summarily dismissed as idiotic. Don’t waste your time responding to, or worrying about these things.
As for me, I have had some issues getting some of my wordpress blogs to accept the javascript. Some do, some don’t. Are you working on some alternative coding?

Good start, but I’d really like the ability to apply a little CSS - or even just the option for a slightly smaller widget. The current one has required an expansion of my sidebar…

September 21st, 2007 at 8:51 am
I agree that characterizing this as some kind of exploitation scheme is silly, since bloggers are offered something for free that may help. Worst case scenario, it doesn’t help and you’re out no money. The only way it hurts is taking up screen real estate, and there’s a simple solution for that — giving up on BlogRush if you don’t like the results.
One thing to consider is it’s not just about stimulating inbound traffic, but about giving your link-hungry readers some other interesting material to read. They may leave if they see a great headline, but you stand to gain regular readers by being a source of more content, especially if you combine it in your sidebar with other content sources, such as displays of your best posts, delicious link feeds, or other feeds.
But I do question the math. I’ve never been good with math, but hear me out. First, if, as John says, “EVERY SINGLE IMPRESSION GETS REWARDED FOR *THAT* IMPRESSION AS IT HAPPENS,” why do I have a credit balance greater than zero? Obviously its being rewarded with a credit, not an impression. And it can’t be promised that all credited impressions be displayed on other blogs immediately, because there may be an imbalance — more bloggers owed impressions than impressions available. Assume there are just two members — me and one other guy. I do 1000 impressions a day; he does 100. As I understand it, I get 1000 credits a day. But my posts can only be shown 100 times, leaving a daily shortfall of 900. Much worse if I recruit all 10 generations of downline, and he has none. Or does my widget draw blanks after showing his posts 100 times, since he has no remaining credits, so I do not get credits for the other 900 impressions? In this case, I get much less than the apparent potential from doing the math (as in simply adding up my pageviews and those of my downline and applying the appropriate credit ratios).

John,
My blog is only a couple of months old (since late July of 2007), and I have no other presence on the web. I have no product for sale as of yet. I haven’t uploaded any articles to directory sites (I know, I know, I have to get those things done). My point is, all I’d done to promote my site prior to Blog Rush was some social bookmarking for a few weeks (e.g. Stumble, Digg, Delicious and Technorati), and I was buried on page 18 of Google search results for my keyword — position 186 or thereabouts.
I jumped on Blog Rush the minute I got your email, which would have been 9/15, I think. Today, 9/21/2007, I’ve jumped almost overnight to page 8 and position 88! It’s not the Holy Grail of position one on page one, I know, but considering that I started at the bottom of the composte heap, this is phenomenal.
And my syndication credits skyrocketed today. You can’t tell me there’s not a correlation between my Google position and my installing Blog Rush on my site. This is definitely not FUTURE credits. This is real time and even my newbie site is benefiting. Thank you, John, et al!
September 21st, 2007 at 8:52 am
Thank You, for being flexible and help my web site look authentic.
September 21st, 2007 at 8:53 am
Thanks for making a pink one!
September 21st, 2007 at 8:57 am
Customizable colors are nice, but I’d really like a bit of leeway on the size. My sidebar is just a bit too small for the entire widget.

I’m very pleased to see that colour choices are coming soon. That certainly answers one big concern. More important, though, for the future of BlogRush, is this prompt and concrete demonstration that BlogRush is responding to user feedback. Good on you!

The colors are a great idea, but what about making smaller borders. The current widget looks too much like advertising, which explains the low CTR rate.
I recommend to come up with a simple widget, without big frames and way less colors and text.

OOH! I want the blue one!!!! =)
September 21st, 2007 at 9:54 am
I installed the widget a couple days ago and I have been getting traffic from it already….not boatloads (and I do have a lot of credits) but it is traffic. I have also had a jump in my RSS subscribers.
One fear that I’ve seen addressed online is that the bloggers who display the widget are sending their blog’s traffic stats back to the BlogRush server, the fear being that this data will be used for something negative. My thought is - if you’re using any kind of stats package, whether Google analytics, statcounter, sitemeter, etc., they are collecting the same data.
Maybe you would want to address this fear for that sector of the blogosphere, too. (?)
Good job on the upcoming colors….I’ll also put in my vote for alternate sizes, thanks!
September 21st, 2007 at 9:54 am
It’s a pyramid, don’t deny that, in the sense that you build a pyramid of
referrals under you to get more credits.
On the other hand it’s not a pyramid scheme, as in bad, as you get all credits
for your own traffic and your referrals traffic in real time without
any condition that the network has to grow to support you.
I have checked the math and it seems ok to me, in addition to the 1:10
credits that John is keeping to support the network he will also get
extra credits from the “missing upline” of the early adopters.
If you signed up under someone that signed up under John directly there
is only two credits awarded, one to you and one to the one who
referred you. In that case John keeps 3 out of 5 credits.
Not that I complain, he has servers and employees to pay, and as the
network grows this will be a very insignificant portion of all users.
Hope you get the clickthrough rate improved soon, it was much better
in the first days running.
Simon

At some point, people will listen wshen told how to get increases of meaningful traffic. That starts with getting traffic…period, and then sorting and culling that trraffic,

Love the flavours! Thanks! How is it a pyramid scheme?? It’s free!
September 21st, 2007 at 11:05 am
I am beginning to lose hope in Blogrush. My site gets a great deal of traffic and I find it hard to believe that I have not gotten any clicks.
September 21st, 2007 at 11:07 am
Its a shame that some will abuse such a great free tool, but I guess that’s human
to exploit anything that you can at the expense of others.
Why are people moaning about a pyramid scheme? are they taking any money out of their pockets?
Keep up the good work John

Great idea, but currently i have had around no clicks, and quite a fair few syndications. But the manual review prccess should help this along!

The default colors were sweet. I am looking forward adding some green flava to my blog.

This concept seems like it could be very productive…it produces a mirror-like affect to your already existing traffic in real time…instantly doubling your traffic!
Although,I’m still unable to delete codes I don’t need within my account I’m sure everything will get worked out.
September 21st, 2007 at 12:01 pm
Great work on the colors guys! Now if we can just get rid of those pathetic cheaters so we can get a better CTR we’ll be all set.
Keep up the good work!

Alright! This will go great with my green theme.
September 21st, 2007 at 12:10 pm
New colors are nice, but different widgets would be better — different shapes/sizes. This
one is too wide for some sidebars.
September 21st, 2007 at 12:15 pm
I have only recently started my http://aboutblogging.info site and Blogrush is one of the tools I’m using to promote it.
The funny thing is that in the stats published on Blogrush I haven’t registered any clicks yet. However, in the logs on my site Blogrush comes up as a referrer. You seem to be underpromoting yourselves in your click-through statistics!
September 21st, 2007 at 12:15 pm
Great news! The colors look great John, etal. I don’t get the pyramid scheme comments either. The only gripe/concern is click thru rates. Regardless, this is a FREE service. I have discovered some blogs I did not know about and made some contacts without even trying…………I think that is the point of this

Good move, John, with these new flavors. As I can see, most people are welcoming them. Next thing to do is to create codes for resizable widgets. Has anyone ever thought that the widget need not necessarily be placed on the sidebar? It could well be placed after a post, so another design will be much welcome.
September 21st, 2007 at 12:45 pm
Thanks John. I was wondering about a color change.
Now how about changing the color of the dark type on red box background that I cannot read? I blame del.ious.us for starting that and now it’s everywhere.

I love the new colors! I would love it even better if we could customize the width of the widget to fit our sidebars better. As it is, it’s a bit too wide and messes up my site in IE, but IE sucks anyway, so it’s not much different. LOL!

Thanks for the new colors - that’s fabulous! I wrote a while ago asking if you’d make thebox more narrow - like 110 px - I see the one you have on this page is narrow - have you made ones we can get that are either 100 or 110 px wide, too? Thanks!

Thanks for the cool widget and for the new flavors, Keep it up man
September 21st, 2007 at 1:54 pm
I’d love for there to be a narrower option box. As it stands I can only keep the widget on my home page since I collapse the right column of my site everywhere else (it’s the only column the widget fits in)…
Beyond that, via scrupulously tracking inbound referrals, I haven’t seen any indications this is getting us even remotely anywhere. But I’ll stick it out as an experiment for a month or so.

September 21st, 2007 at 2:17 pm
hi, awesome widget, hopefully you will not stop here.
one of the most important improvements in my opinion would be an inclusion of “keywords”. currently, you allow to block the keywords, however, specifying the keywords pertinent to my blog (and possibly matching those with other blogs listed keywords or headlines), would help to list relevant headlines in a widget.
can you please also add “fashion” or “clothing” to your blog categories. thanks in advance and good luck with the venture.
September 21st, 2007 at 2:18 pm
I’m sorry if I have missed it somewhere, but are there any plans to provide .html code for the widget (as opposed to javascript)?
Thankx!

Feature Request…
One thing I would like to see added, would be a way to delete a blog that we set up with BlogRush.
I created a blog profile in BlogRush, but I couldn’t get the widget to work properly on that blog. So now I have an unused blog profile in my BlogRush account.
It doesn’t matter to much, it’s just annoying to keep seeing
I also changed the name of the blog to “Please Delete”, just so that I wouldn’t get confused as to which ones were active.

Help! This is probably not the place for this question but I could not find anyplace else on blogrush to ask. I have been attempting to place the code on my blog for several days but no success. I assume the link under “Get Code” tab is the one to copy and paste. I copy it but it does not paste (”Paste” disappears.) I even tried typing the link - that did not work either. Perhaps I’m not copying the right code?
I even tried copying the code on the video tutorial for blogspot but of course could not!
I hope someone can help - thanks so much!

I’ve noticed some incoming traffic from the widget listed in my site’s traffic stats - yet the blogrush widget is only showing 1 click-through.
Also, yesterday my blog was hit harder than normal by stumbleupon. This earned quite a few impressions. This morning though, I was listed as having something like -50(NEGATIVE!) credits, and I’m still in the red. Any ideas?
September 21st, 2007 at 4:12 pm
John
Would be also Nice if you could add some ‘flexibility’ as for the Size to that ‘widget’.
It is screwing the layout on some of my blogs so much that I cannot use it!
It is simply too wide for my sidebars.
Doesn’t work even when I tried to put it into a table.
Also:
It ONLY works on a Home page right?
If I put it on my post pages the system did not recognize it
September 21st, 2007 at 4:24 pm
Excellent work all!
And I agree with John’s (Dagmar) suggestion about size flexibility. It would be nice to be able to adjust the size of the widget. But I’m sure that’ll come eventually anyway.
Bottom line, things with BlogRush are looking pretty nice so far!

Yes, the code is under the “Get Code” link. It’s what’s in the yellow box. Try to copy and paste it again. Hopefully it’ll work.

Great!
Thanks for helping me increase my blog traffic.

Arthur
September 21st, 2007 at 5:44 pm
Hi Barbara,
No, the Direct Referral Link is not the code for the widget. What browser are you using? Maybe it’s just not showing the page correctly?
I took a screenshot of my page and circled the area where the code is. This is what you are looking for. See if you can find that in your account. Try logging again, then click on the Get Code button. That will take you to the proper page. If you don’t see the code box then I’m not sure what would be causing it not to appear. Perhaps someone else on here has an idea?
Here’s the link to the screenshot.
Anyway, I hope that helps!
Shine on,
Aaron

hope we got the chance to PICK the colors and not just to pick from a SET (yeah, want to blend it better with the layout).

September 21st, 2007 at 7:09 pm
Colors are nice. But like so many others who’ve commented here, I need a smaller width to fit my site design. 120px maximum.
I don’t use a “standard” template, I designed my own, and my site uses CSS layout not tables. I tried so many different ways to incorporate the widget without putting it in the sidebar. I was able to display it in a floated div, but then the links wouldn’t work! Finally I gave up, put it in the sidebar and added an extra left margin to the main content. And then I had to get to display right in IE! (Need I say more…)
All that tweaking took a bit of work, and a lot of hitting the refresh button… Now my stats show a minus value as someone undoubtedly thinks I was “cheating”. (It would be nice if we had the option to use a special code while working this into our custom designed blogs…)
All that said, I intend to keep the widget up as long as the service is available. As far as I’m concerned, it’s like chicken soup for the blog: It couldn’t hurt!

if there is no visitors to my site the statistics should be stagnant, but apparently it goes way down into negative. what is the point in all of this? can you provide me with explanation? why negative?

September 22nd, 2007 at 4:54 am
Another suggestion, I think Dom Delimar already made this, and I wanted to strengthen it a tad… The possibilities to be able to style it some would be great… Not locking the widget to a certain look. I have talked to several of my friends which have a more narrow design than me, and they willl not use blogrush however much I say it’s a good tool on account of the lack of design choices or possibilities to change width and so forth… the widget itself with any number of links and the top headline, and the bottom referral link could still be there, but more choice in order to make the thing fit more designs would be even greater as folks do actually not choose it depending on this feature’s not being here…
Thanks for a great tool - Patric.

How do I find my url feed?
September 22nd, 2007 at 7:58 am
I agree with posters above that we need some way of resizing the widget to fit it within the sidebars. Also on the Dashboard we need more ability to manage the blogs. Eg I have somehow managed to get two blogs into the system, but there is no way to delete one.
On the credits it does weird things - such as when refreshed the credits drop dramatically. Now I am into negative! 115 impressions so far today - balance -15?
September 22nd, 2007 at 8:15 am
Thats good and i also think its good for my traffic even its always up and down. By the way. I also love the flavour..the colorus..:)

John,
I think of everything. Please continue your great work.
All the best!
September 22nd, 2007 at 9:35 am
I think many of the pyramid conclusion was based on the earlier (wrong) assumption that 1 credit would be given from level 1 all the way to 10. The video wasn’t clear on this point.
With each serving showing only 5 ads and giving out 10 credits, of course there would be a deficit and the system would not be able to support.
It was quite clear to me from the start that only a max of 5 credits could be given out from levels 1-10.
September 22nd, 2007 at 9:40 am
I agreed with Tony Dolling. It would be good if we are allowed to delete the url that we have added. At the moment there is no such flexibility.
I also don’t understand why is it that my balance is in negative?
Anyway John, thanks for such a brilliant idea.
September 22nd, 2007 at 10:49 am
As has been mentioned several times here, different size widgets are required. When I add this to my sidebar it pushes the tables out. I don’t really want to go through the hastle of resizing my header etc. to accomodate it.
One other thing I have found is when I add it to the index page, my adsense will not show on that page.
I had begun getting traffic from the widget, but it’s useless traffic since my blog is only monetized with adsense. Catch 22 here!
Thanks for the start with the new flavors. Resize next…..PLEASE!!

AdSense is just truying to protect their advertisors and those of us who are playing the game fair. It is too bad there have to be cheater but there are.
It might save you time and improve the service if a means for us the users to report sites that violate the member reiteria. I have seen three non-English sites and if there was a way to report such you could quickly find them and take approperate action. This will also reduce the possibility of people changing the site information to an unacceptable format after they think you have completed the manual check.
The system I am thinking of is like the “Report a Site” used by traffic exchances.

John,
One of the success factors of WordPress and other blog platforms is the availability of thousands of themes from 3rd party developers.
How about allowing us to customize or replace bstyles.css? That should take care of 90% of the requests above.
Sure you would lose control over the look of the BlogRush widget but it would allow people to blend in the widget with their specific blog theme, which would most likely increase CTR.
And you can focus your energy on more exciting development aspects of BlogRush.
September 23rd, 2007 at 2:12 am
Glad to see the improvements.
For those who are asking, I have this installed on two WordPress blogs and it works fine. There is a video on how to install it as a text widget and I’ve been up and running without a hitch. Take a look at http://PhoenixRecommends.com to see it in action. So far today I have collected 283 hits.
One problem. I have two blogs, but the stats only show a single value. Is that the aggregate value of both blogs or is there a way to see each blog separately?
There have been lots of good comments and suggestions here, so I won’t add to the noise. It’s looking good and I think the colors are neat. Anxious to give them a try.
September 23rd, 2007 at 3:20 am
BlogRush works on WordPress.org BlogRush does not work on WordPress.com blogs.
Anyone else seeing the bottom of the widget not there at times? The “Add your blog Posts s -s - free” and the little BlogRush tab? On a couple of my blogs the bottom of the widget is there sometimes and not there at other times.
