My browser still has the Back button and even the least experienced users know what that is for. And I know I can't force them to stay on my website if they don't want to because no matter what I do they still have the highest control over browsing. Why would I make their surfing experience difficult then? Besides, there are even studies telling us that links opening new page inside the same window (or tab) are more natural and generally what an average user expects. I think if there were subcategories the traffic would be more targetted and the click throughs would be higher.
