Over 40,000,000 Blog Headlines Served | |||
|
| ||
|
We’re about 5 days into the launch of BlogRush and its growth has been nothing short of EXPLOSIVE. We’ve served over 40 MILLION blog headlines (i.e. blog post titles and links to the full post.) And each day that passes is serving more than the previous day — it’s truly growing virally. By now you’ve probably seen write-ups and discussion about BlogRush all over blogs, discussion forums, and in email newsletters. Many have raved about the service while others have been very critical of it. We certainly welcome ALL criticism and feedback, good or bad. It’s the only way we will be able to improve the service to help our users generate more targeted traffic to their blogs. Now I Know How Google Feels Unfortunately, the bozos have come out of the woodwork and are trying to cheat the BlogRush system. We have quite a few users that are abusing the system — from running scripts to auto-load the widget, to other fraudulent methods to earn syndication credits for their account that they do not deserve. These ‘cheaters’ are hurting the overall network and dramatically lowering the click-through rates for our good users. It’s obvious since their “impressions” are not even seen by humans and therefore are not sending any traffic to other users. There have also been concerns about the QUALITY of blogs in the BlogRush network. Some poor quality blogs (I wouldn’t even call them blogs.. more like pages of junk and ads) have been added to BlogRush and it’s creating a problem. What We’re Doing About These Issues 1. We’re moving to a MANUAL REVIEW process. No more automation. We will be reviewing ALL blogs submitted to BlogRush. If the quality of the blog is poor, they will not be allowed to participate. We’re going to start reviewing ALL the blogs that are currently in our network and will be disabling the accounts for poor quality blogs. 2. We’re continuing to add security measures to our system and we will be mass-removing any and all cheaters that we discover. We will not rest until the cheaters are WIPED OUT and kept from abusing our network. The manual review process will help eliminate most of them as legitimate bloggers that have put in the time to create a decent blog aren’t the types that are going to be abusing the system. All of these changes will only benefit our users — it wil increase their click-through rates and drive more traffic to their blogs. It will also make sure that the blogs their widget links to are only quality blogs. For everyone that has signed up for an account and has been testing BlogRush on their blog, thank you for your patience. Please know that we are working as quickly as possible to improve the service. |

I am more than happy with the traffic BlogRush is giving me.
During my many lazy moments I keep an I on my referrers snaking through HitTail, and I can see I’m getting more than my 2% back - more clicks than my stats show.
Very low volumes in the grand scheme of 40 million.
Very significant in my little slice of the Internet.
Thanks John - keep up the good work
September 20th, 2007 at 3:37 am
Wow — you must really have the hamsters running their hearts out in those servers. Those are some impressive numbers. Keep up the great work!
September 20th, 2007 at 3:45 am
Great news John, I salute the manual review process!!!
Sorry if you have mentioned this somewhere before and I didn’t see it but will there be an option in the future for BlogRush users to purchase credits?
September 20th, 2007 at 3:46 am

September 20th, 2007 at 4:25 am
Funhaus — your blog will need to have an active RSS feed. Not all blogs have them. Do you know what software/platform your blog runs on?
Razvan — we hope to add a “buy credits” option in the near future.
September 20th, 2007 at 4:25 am
Wow, that is a lot of syndication credits earned. I have it on my website and the results are positive. http://www.blogrash.com/
I don’t know if it’s just me though, but this is the first time that I’ve heard about this blog rush thing. I’ve checked the blog rush site out and it looks very interesting and it also looks like it will go somewhere.
September 20th, 2007 at 4:44 am
May we ask how does manual review process do? How many Blogs are manually reviewed every hour? Over 40,000,000 figure will require very long man-hours.
September 20th, 2007 at 4:47 am
@mar - that 40,000,000 blog headlines not blogs
keep up the good work.
September 20th, 2007 at 5:06 am
If it’s from JR , then i wouldn’t be surprised to see such ‘rush’ to any blog…but manual review seems forever lol..

Wow i guess that with any service you are going to get a few complaints ey?
hope you smooth this out and get things rolling along properly!
I have no doubt that cheating this system will only work for the next few days, programmers will have the means nessesary to catch out the so called “Cheaters”
So if you are thinking about this, and I have seen a blog showing how you can do this, dont think about. Viral effect takes time and if you treat it right it will be good to you.
Leave all the other dirty work and crime fighting to john and his team.
September 20th, 2007 at 7:08 am
Hi john , thanks for the fill on my ? still tring to set up .I’m using blogger blog .
where do i get an actice rss feed . any help would be real fine . thousand thanks
September 20th, 2007 at 7:30 am
John, as I mentioned earlier but you may have missed, I really only have two complains:
First, the ads aren’t that relevant yet (don’t worry, I’m giving you guys time to improve those before removing it!) but it seems kind of silly that there isn’t a fitness category, which is a pretty large demographic that doesn’t necessarily fit into the “Sports” category.
Second, when your site has issues, the widget gives the message from your home page on the blogs (namely, this site can not load try again in a few minutes) - our sites are fine, it’s the widget that has the problem, and that might confuse our readers.
Otherwise, great work, and I am looking forward to seeing how this progresses.
September 20th, 2007 at 8:16 am
Hi John,
How is ‘current credit balance’ tallied? Is it my total credits earned minus the number of displays I’ve had? Will the number of displays be shown in the numbers at some point?
Thank you
Kat Bartone
September 20th, 2007 at 8:47 am
John when buying credits will we be able to choose the blogs that will show our blog posts through BlogRush? Or will they appear on random blogs, like now?
September 20th, 2007 at 8:50 am

40 million headlines in the first 5 days is a quite impressive launch!
My educated guesses on your traffic - see my blog post http://www.TipsTricksToolsTechniques.com/?p=62 - turned out to be almost right on.
I’d love to learn more about your architecture behind BlogRush.
Keep tuning and feeding those server hamsters!
September 20th, 2007 at 10:45 am
40 million headlines served already, that is a explosion. Yes, there as with all programs like this there will be cheaters, but all you can do is remove them and keep the security tight, great service.

What about non-English blogs?
September 20th, 2007 at 3:03 pm
@Geza, BlogRush is in its beginning stages. From what John Reese has said, he is eventually going to make widgets for non-English languages, but this is still in the beta testing stages now.
September 20th, 2007 at 3:30 pm
The question is how many of these 40,000,000 blog headlines were served by ‘cheaters’ who were running scripts to auto-load the widget or used other fraudulent methods.
September 20th, 2007 at 3:44 pm
Woa, thats some quick thinking to imporve your system. Looking forward to this comming out of beta and into alpha or whatever its called. Take care.

I don’t think that is 40,000,000 are blogs that they will be reviewing, like many commenter’s here think.
These 40 mill are blog headlines that have shown on the BlogRush network. If I am right, this number includes multiple post titles being shown for one blog. These are not 40 mill different blogs.
I don’t think they will be reviewing each blog post title, but they will review each blog as they are signed up. They will review the blog to make sure it confirms to standards, and then they will let that blog’s post titles show without further reviewing.
I have had thousands of syndication impressions today, and this is just for 2 of my blogs. That 40mill number is the number of impressions served, not the number of blogs that signed up and need reviewing.
I believe that is what was meant, but please correct me if I am wrong.
Joel
September 20th, 2007 at 5:40 pm
Joel is correct. We aren’t reviewing each individual blog post, but the blogs themselves.
September 20th, 2007 at 6:00 pm
If you do plan to implement some type of ‘buy credits’, could you please put a cap on the amount possible for purchase? I really see it becoming unfair pretty quickly for the smaller quality posters who are being out “bought” by the more wealthy bloggers.
September 20th, 2007 at 7:32 pm
@SpoThought
yeah I think so. And would likely, only BIG Boys are right now benefiting from this system right now as will as the cheaters. They are likely those who can tap networks easily with this kind of system. Small blog wouldn’t be benefited on targeted ads, unlike Big Boys do. But it help me in someways too. I love this widget.
Btw. if you need to tap on the resources, you do need have to put up your own network. If you need more contents, you should have 30000mb cheap hosting if you dont have your own host server, if you are small time. Just check out this host, you’ll be thankful I let you know this one exists http://www.blogrash.com/webhosting/
September 20th, 2007 at 8:24 pm
Hi John,
Are you aware of the fact that none of the WordPress.com bloggers can benefit from this because the widget uses javascript which is not allowed on Wordpress.com for security purposes?
I have a SiteMeter widget embedded on my page which contains simply a hyperlink pointing to an asp script hosted on their server. Is there any chance BlogRush could work similarly or it’s just WordPress.com blogs are out of luck in this one (forever)?
Appreciate any response
September 20th, 2007 at 8:59 pm

John, I hope you guys can get the issues worked out. I dropped the widget because the headlines were ridiculous. It would’ve been a disservice to my readers to keep it. sorry john but i rarely see any traffic after the widget was implemented … in contrast i managed to get few (less than 5) traffic BEFORE the widget was put into my blog …
i hope blogrush could rectify the problem soonest possible as most of the bloggers out there are giving a couple of days to see the effect before call it a quit … it could be the cheaters but still …
cheers

Thanks for the mention of HitTail, Keith. And I know how you feel, John. HitTail is tweaked out to the max to allow few servers to handle massive amounts of work. Several months ago, we announced our 4 millionth writing suggestion issued. Because each actual suggestion represents 5% of the total keywords considered, that’s 380 million keywords considered, which is a fraction of the total page-loads monitored. We’re in brave new days where a little hardware can go a long way.

I’m not certain if anyone has run into this problem and been given this information. I have a Wordpress blog and attempted to insert the widget in it. I couldn’t see it, and did everything correctly, as far as I can see. I’ve been advised by the Wordpress admins that BlogRush widgets are a “no go” in Wordpress blogs. Number one, they are a viral widget promoting third party sites and number two, they use javascript, which for security reasons, gets stripped from their servers. So if you’re trying to use a Wordpress blog and it isn’t working, that’s why. So I guess I’ll try creating another blog at another site. But that’s a lot of trouble, considering I’ve had this one a long time.
September 22nd, 2007 at 6:28 am
I can’t wait to see if BlogRush will live up to the hype.. It’s probably that it will given the insane participation from bloggers all around the world. Le’ts make it work.
