Is Internet Marketing Just A Scam? | |||

Sorry for the delay… my little ‘break’ from blogging ended up being a bit longer than expected… This is entry #3 in the What Are You Struggling With? series. If you’d like to submit one of your struggles for consideration please post a comment in this original post. If you want to view all the posts in this series visit the Struggling Series category. Many people wonder if Internet Marketing is just one big scam. There are tons of “get rich quick” schemes being promoted all over the Internet and, unfortunately, many people have been burned by them. Making money online also seems too good to be true to many that hear about it. And what can often make things hard on an aspiring Internet entrepreneur is when their spouse thinks it’s all one big scam or has their own doubts about what their significant other is spending a lot of their time on. So here’s a great question for this entry…
Cy, You’re right… it does take time to build up a consistent income online, but what often helps “buy you some time” when it comes to pleasing a spouse who is somewhat skeptical about the possibility of making money online is to do something that brings in some immediate income that she can physically touch. While you build your site(s) via the StomperNet method, consider selling a few things on eBay, promoting affiliate products via PPC services like AdWords, Yahoo, and MSN AdCenter, or whatever to get a few bucks rolling in. Then physically spend that money on your wife by taking her out to dinner and a movie, getting her a nice gift, paying for a massage, or what have you, making sure that you let her know where that money came from. One thing to keep in mind about skeptical people is that they don’t care HOW you got the money in, necessarily, just that you DID get the money in, so don’t bore them with details of how AdWords works, what your sales conversion numbers are, or any of that stuff. Just tell your wife that you’re starting to figure this online marketing stuff out, and while it may take some time to make a decent income, you are bringing in some revenue that will allow you to buy a few things. The main point I’m trying to make is that you have to make the time that you spend implementing this online marketing stuff benefit HER in some way, and if you have difficulty convincing her to be patient while you wait for it to payoff sometime in the future, then creating some small commissions from affiliate or eBay sales to spend on her may be the way to go. Best of luck to you! ~John |

I think a lot of people have this problem. No just with making online income but also investing and doing things differently than the norm.
I started 4 years ago just when I met my girlfriend and she though I was crazy. She was taught completely differently and had deep seeded beliefs that went against my own. She always said she would get a job, save her money and I could do the ‘risky’ business and investing stuff. It was a little upsetting because I wanted us to be a team in the making money area also, but I accepted the way she felt.
Fast forward to now (after 4 years of my influence) and she has completely changed her thinking, 100%. We’re not wealthy yet but we have plenty with my online income and she’s just finishing her master’s degree and has already decided that she doesn’t want a job! She wants to build our online and offline assets and make her own business.
So, for anyone who is struggling with a spouse or girlfriend who doesn’t understand and is basically afraid, don’t worry, they’ll come around eventually. It may surprise you just how much!

John excellent article about the scam view and appeasing the spouse.
I too get it daily is this a scam questions.. The internet business
is not a scam and just because website example.com sells a $45
widget on how to build google ppc or Search engine tricks and the
customer tosses the info in the corner and hollers scam because
they didnt make any moeny within the first week doesnt make it
a scam…. If people would take steps daily and add another twig
to their marketing funnels it will work in time. No you cant get rich
in 24 hours, 30 day or even 12 months but you can make income
in less then 24 hours online if you do the work that is required to
make the income….. I love the concept of the wife not trusting that
there is money online…. My wife in 1999 had a government job and
I just started selling online after quitting my job and I was the biggest
louse deadbeat under the sun cause I wasnt making money the first
few days or weeks…. The motivation factor was huge because I wanted
to proove her wrong……. Well 2007 is here. Ha she is a stay at home
mom, we go on regular family trips, built a new home, and now the
tables are turned.. I give her a clickbank account and a few other
income streams and I give her a corner of real estate on my web
properties and every month she sure is waiting for the postman to bring
them checks. She gets to go spend and I pay all bills for our family
with internet income.. She doesnt even have to promote her affliate
links has no idea why she gets the checks but hey she feels like she is
part of the business. She asked me the other day why does clickbank
and google keep sending her checks. I just tell her I bought a bunch of
stock and that the profit is paid bi weekly and monthly rather then try and
explain to her how I make traffic and marketing work. Its a job doing
online marketing. I put in 15 hours a day but i love it and its very
rewarding as you know to well…….. Great article. Thanks

Hi John
Very glad you are back from your break. Hope you got a nice rest.
What would you do to build a network marketing business with Health Drinks?
Would you do person to person? Or send out mailers? Or visit the forums? and post on other peoples blogs? try to get on the first page of the search engines? buy ppc? I would love to hear your ideas on this. I just join Monavie. it is a very fast growing health drink business. I love the juice and share it with just about everyone. The problem is the price that is charged. Retail is $45.00 and most people that I know will not pay that or join the business to get it wholesale at $32.00. I know that I am not doing the best that I could. I just need ideas that would work for me.
Thanks John and everyone

Welcome back John!
You’ve been missed sorely!
When is the new traffic secrets coming out and when are you going to work on the stompernet bonus offer?
In any event, I think John’s hit it right on the head. Don’t really get into the details about how internet marketing works and how you plan to make money online. It goes over people’s heads. Most people are worker bees so to hear about an idea that doesn’t involve a boss sounds alien to them. By definition to be an internet marketer you have to have an entrepreneur’s spirit and since most people don’t, it just baffles their little minds to think there’s a way to make money outside of a 9-5 job (just over broke). So they just assume what you’re doing is scam or will fail. After all if it isn’t why isn’t everyone else doing it? lol
Don’t look for support from these people. And sadly that may mean family members. When I first started out at the tender age of 19 I told my mom that I wanted to make money online. And she told me what every worker bee says “oh that sounds risky. You better look for a “good job”.
I’ve always been the type to do just the opposite of what people expect of me or tell me I can’t do. So she inspired me to prove her wrong and I have many times over. I’ve been able to send her on nice vacations or buy her nice stuff. Once she started seeing that stuff it was all love and encouragement then. lol But John is right. I didn’t bore her with the details. I just did it and showered her the end results.
I’m very lucky to have a wife that is very supportive about my online endeavors. In fact I’m leaving my full time job and my wife is totally behind me. But that’s because I’ve shown her that what I make with my online business doubles or triples what I make at my full time job. So showing and proving is the best way to get support from loved ones.
In the mean time talk to like minded people like the folks found on this blog and other forums. They will help you stay motivated. Ignore worker bees because they will be worker bees all their lives! No disrespect to worker bees, because we need them to work for us entrepreneurs. =)

Before marrying, before getting involved with someone, find out their attitude towards
risk, entrepreneurship and business. The entrepreneurial mindset is completely
opposite from the employee mindset, and I think a lot of realtionships are
destroyed because both partners don’t share the same fundamental beliefs about
business/entrepreneurship.
Situations like Javi’s are rare, indeed. Most partners (in my opinion) do not “change
their minds” and adopt entrepreneurial attitudes. Belief systems are very difficult to
change, and if someone holds an “employee mindset” (get a “good job”, avoid risk),
it’s very tough to make them see otherwise.
August 29th, 2007 at 2:25 pm
I agree with Chris.
PS: Welcome back the the blog, John!!!
August 29th, 2007 at 2:35 pm
Good suggestion about not telling your spouse about Adwords or the details of your internet empire. I get all excited about the ROI of a new program, or exactly how much traffic I got by using a new method, and try to tell my husband (attorney) about it.
His eyes glaze over.
Now I’m just going to give him the bottom line, that my business made over $5K in August, and we can go buy a new fridge this weekend.
Another tip — it’s easy to get bogged down in just working on the long term — building your list — and forgetting to do the short term — making some money today. I did that earlier this year, when my list was growing by leaps and bounds, but I had a few horrible months.
Now I make an effort to spend part of each day bringing in short term money. It may be promoting a product to my list, selling an affiliate program, or completing a consulting project. Whatever, but I try to do both each day, to keep an eye on both bottom lines.
Thanks!
Elizabeth

Chris,
I’m not sure if I totally agree with your comments. I think marrying or being involved with someone that shares the mindset is ideal but not always practical. My wife is a total worker bee. But because she loves me, she tries her best to support my endeavors even if she feels deep inside they’re risky. But I agree if you can find someone with the same mindset, go for it. But who can control matters of the heart? lol

Nice to see you’re back! I was wondering how long it’d be :p
Btw, I love the “Then physically spend that money on your wife by taking her out to dinner and a movie, getting her a nice gift, paying for a massage, or what have you, making sure that you let her know where that money came from.” bit. That’s just genius!
In my case, I spent some hard earned money on a rather nice bottle of wine for myself and my partner, who I’m dropping in to visit (she lives 200 miles away) on Sunday. Here’s to romance, modern transportation and online marketing!

Hi,
My name is Sam form Israel and I would like to share my thoughts:
1. It doesnt matter if your wife or someone else believe in the way your doing money because they WILL never understand it. people don’t think the same when it comes to money.
2. Internet money takes a while to make but its just like any other new business you build! it takes time and you need to say it to yourself everyday when sometimes you might want to quit.
3. eBay takes too much time so try to sell expensive products.
4. AdWords PPC might cost TOO MUCH if you sell lower cost products.
5. in the industrial age people made money physically. In the information age people make money virtually! The Internet is the REAL ESTATE of the future!
I am a computer engineer and got MBA and the real truth is that I not learned from school but from ACTING! the real truth is that you need to ACT to get results, so try Internet marketing and ALWAYS improve it until you succeed.

Change is hard, but people do change with influence. Anyone’s ideas can change if they become influenced for a long enough time. Not only my girlfriend changed, every single one of my friends who I keep regular contact with has changed.
In the previous post I didn’t mention that when I met my girlfriend I was broke, so I didn’t just influence her, I proved to her that I was right and now she wants the life that I have been building for us, not having a steady job, little money and no freedom to come and go and work as you please.
August 31st, 2007 at 7:06 am
This is VERY true with the wives! Just don’t go crazy.. You want to use some of that income to re-invest into your business until you’ve got a big steady income

Cy,
John is so right about this. I think many of us have gone through
the same thing.
The only remedy is spoiling your wife. It may take a bit extra work
but it’s way easier to just make some more money then it is to deal
with a nagging spouse.
Even when I was broke, I would always share my earnings with my
lady (and she’s only my girlfriend) and do anything I could to make
sure she knew I would take care of her.
She was incredibly patient with me, and while things weren’t always
great for me financially, she never said anything bad. She never
said “Get a real job” or anything like that.
Because deep down she knew I was doing this for “US”.
Right now she’s cruising around the Mediteranean Sea spending
my money and I don’t mind one bit.
She deserves it just for putting up with me for the last few years.
And I found a little secret that seems to work wonders. It appears
the more money and gifts I give my girlfriend, the more money I’m
forced to make!
While the Stompernet thing may take a bit to see a positive return
on investment, there’s nothing stopping you from hustling up cash
today, and taking the wife out to a nice dinner tonight.
Good luck pal,
Jason Moffatt

Hi John….
You just sovled my problem… I’ll make some cash quick, take my wife out to dinner, order up an expensive bottle of wine, order her favorite meal, and when she is feeling really good, and got her laughing, I’ll tell her that dinner’s on me from my new internet marketing business cash machine, and she will really laugh until her stomach hurts, then I will quickly tell her about the other internet home study courses that I ordered with credit cards that she doesn’t know about and hopefully she doesn’t take me too serious! Great Idea!
Great stuff…John!

Ebay! I’m busy trying to start Ebay and I can see that’s not an easy route. Got any tips for that John?
Think maybe a little part-time work. Discuss the options and make any idea that doesn’t mean you have to quit trying. Let any working solution be ultimately there idea. Something charming about a guy who makes life all about you.
You know its dam hard the other way. When the spouse wants you to keep on trying but you can’t even make the minimum wage. Soul destroying. I’m warn out from trying.
Still I’m learning and If I don’t make it at least I’m doing more than the housework.

John, Internet Marketing is a scam for most people and it is a goldmine for us. Charge your following with doing good due diligence when considering a home based business income opportunity. I cover proper due diligence steps in detail.
Awesome reply to the question. I remember squelching my wife’s criticism when I had not made a dime at the start by putting her face to face with Internet marketing millionaires who were mentoring me. She caught the vision so much she earned the first $1,000.00. I can’t stop her!
Make it a Great Labor Day Weekend. Welcome back Bro.

John is dead on about this. Thankfully my girlfriend or my parents weren’t skeptical because they believed in me, but it was my friends that were the problem.
They didn’t believe someone could make a living working from home and not be involved in MLM or a business opportunity. Some people are just not open to new ideas and believe what they are taught by government schools is the only way.
Needless to say, after a few nights of buying the beer I was able to change their mind. Keep up the great work and never give up because you will get there eventually.

Chris (comment 10), like minded people are good for friends and business dealings, but sometimes with couples opposites attract. Like Shoemoney and his wife, Paul Abdul and that cat….

[John, Internet Marketing is a scam for most people and it is a goldmine for us. Charge your following with doing good due diligence when considering a home based business income opportunity]
LHBE — good point! A lot of people use the phrase “internet marketing” wrong. They say “internet marketing” but they are talking about ‘get rich quick scheme on the Internet’ — they don’t do due diligence and that’s why they get into trouble.
Marketing is marketing whether it’s direct mail marketing or Internet marketing. There’s lots of ways of reaching people to sell stuff. The Internet is just one way. People who can’t see that are the ones that fall for the scams. There is none so blind as he who will not see.

A ppc is nice, but how do you set one up without going broke.
I have lost 100’s of dollars with ppc and not really made a dime with it.
I know many many people have lost thousands and some millions.
I know a lot about getting on the front page of most search engines and I pretty much stay there and I do make sells from there. I just haven’t been able to make any sells with ppc.
Anyone have any great ideas?
