Good stuff, John. Your business vs. moneymaker illustration reminds me of Seth Godin’s new book, The Dip…where he advocates stripping away anything at which you cannot excel…in order to devote your emotional and physical resources to markets where you can dominate. He suggests that doing a bunch of things halfway is a waste of your personal gifts. It’s not a direct parallel to what you’re saying, but there’s some common ground. And I think his book is absolutely worth a read (or listen…as I’m a fan of audiobooks for the most part).

I keep your list of rules and they have helped me to make right decisions.

Great video, I like the part of testing before selling, the mail address idea is a good one

I agree with you in principle, John, but there seems to be ways to make I bit of money online (without scamming or being deceptive) while one is building one or many “serious†online businesses. You are a true example of a person who lives by the principle of abundance, in the sense that you are convinced that there is nothing to lose by sharing the knowledge you have gained on and about the Internet over the years. “What you give shall be returned to you tenfold…â€
Are your “rules†the making of a Book? Sure could be one… and it would be very useful to others, too…
Thanks and keep up the good work.

I liked the bit about the “dummy” sales letter. That was sweet.

Excellent info.
My question is how do you over pay for traffic if you are starting on a low budget?
July 5th, 2007 at 11:01 am
Here in the UK I am finding the quality is annoyingly bad because every 20-30 secs the video pauses itself like you got too much traffic hitting it at once or something. Not good. Not impressed.
July 5th, 2007 at 1:56 pm
Jorge - Yes, I plan on writing a book that will contain all the rules (and others I haven’t released yet.)
Louise - If you press PLAY, then immediately press PAUSE you will notice a light colored ‘bar’ the progressively moves to the right… wait a little bit as that means the video is loading… when that bar gets far enough to the right, then press PLAY again and the video should play just fine. The stopping and starting is when your connection hasn’t downloaded the video far enough ahead to outpace the real-time playing of the video.

Yeah, I think many people come into the internet business world with the ‘get rich quick’ mindset still in place. I know people have made money just catching the ‘latest, great’ online moneymaking craze of the moment, but I haven’t see true and lasting wealth come until the realization that, what we do is and has to be see as a REAL business.
Creating an online business branding yourself as an expert by using the ‘classic’ online marketing techniques first, THEN testing all the ‘latest, greatest’ ways to market has been working best for me so far.

Hi john,
It was the best video so far. I will use many of your suggestions for the launch of my new product. I am anaffiliate marketer, but I just discovered that the best way to be an affiliate is to create your own products!

john this video was almost as good as the last, but not quite.
you speak of building a business and not a moneymaker. i agree with that 100%.
however did you build moneymakers when you started out? im willing to bet you built
a few.
also, how tempting do you think it may be for someone who is broke or near to broke
and who is starting out on the internet to build a moneymaker.
just a few thoughts
July 6th, 2007 at 5:07 am
Simon - In the video John mentions that he learnt the hardway and initially did build sites with the sole objective of money. The implication here is not that you can not do this if you are broke, in I fact I would be one to encourage this to some extent as it will give you a practical experience of the pros and cons of this. However there is a principal law in operating within methodology; it will only provide short term benefits and then fizzle out.
A longterm strategy will build you a viable business and develop a brand for you. Regardless of what views people hold about the purchase of youtube by google for $1billion, it was a excellent strategical move. Seth Godin discusses the issue of a evolving society that has multiple changing products/services thrusted at them. However people will filter that information and stick to one brand or selective of few brands in that niche, even if 100s of competitors appear. ‘Mankind is like sheep, one leads and the rest follows.’
Google purchased a brand leader that is here to stay. Business is about understanding people, if you understand people you will understand the philosophy of business. Regardless of the killer headlines of techcrunch, mashable, etc ‘myspace has a youtube killer video service’, etc. It will not knock of Youtube off their spot. It does not work like that.
Social networking are successful for that reason, they aim to connect people. Facebook is tactically one of the best as it aims to direct people into their own hubs and groups with like minded people.
The suggestion from John is to entice your users with widgets, forums, blogs, freebies. This is absolutely the way to go. Enhance the quality of the experience that is derived by your users and bring them to be part of a network.
Over at oscandy.com and socioclick.com we create extensions for Joomla and Wordpress, combined we have a 10,000 registered users. Most of the applications we give away for free, and sell a few to cover all the costs to pay developers; but over a period of 12 months we have not made any profit. Thats fine for now. Our developers are learning ajax, mootools, javascript to a very advanced level and creating some funky stuff. Our principal objective is to enhance the quality of the sites/blogs and give their users a better experience. Will this build loyalty and better branding, hell ya!

I started out trying to promote any clickbank site that looked profitible, then built a mall –which many have long advised againgst– which lets the user decide what they want. Nowadays my focus is mainly on growing my WezeeMall and “building loyalty and better branding” is a must…in fact the “branding” is extremely important for staying power. A few months ago a major story was done on Jay-Z for mastering art of “branding” even though he had no formal education in it.
I already know from current user activity at WezeeMall that this is a great place for people to shop online at.
Also, another great social site to visit is bumpzee.com/onlineshopping
